So many lives lost , lot of destruction and stil counting. The massive earthquake and tsunami has taken a lot which will never come back. Death toll in Japan is in thousands..  But just imagine if this would have happened in India... The dath toll and loss would have been more than what it is there...Do you agree to my statement?

Yes, BUT perhaps you would not have been there in existence in that case, just to ask such type of nasty question having already vanished with the occurrence of earthquake of such a magnitude and subsequent tsunami.

It is not understood, what point you actually want to prove by getting the answers to this question, as a Principal Correspondent?

Japan's tragedy is not such of the type to be made use of making media's spicy stories, while Japan needs real and immediate help not only from the world Governments and communities, but ALSO from media, as a responsible player in aid to mankind, but not to resort to merely putting such type of nasty questions.

Clarification by Sulagna Brahma, a third person, is just like an example of "Muddai Sust, Gawah Chust."

When one correspondent (Kavitha) could not defend herself by making her position clear, another correspondent (Sulagna) came to her rescue.

BUT Madam, the people participating here are well educated and know fully well what havoc such type of tragedy can cause to the people of any country. On the other hand, it is quite a well known fact that media now a days prefers mostly to carve out spicy stories out of even bad news.

AS A MEDIA PERSON, WHY NOT TRY YOURSELF TO CONDUCT A SURVEY WITHIN THE PUBLIC AUDIENCE JUST TO KNOW TO WHAT EXTENT PEOPLE LIKE MEDIA'S SPICY STORIES?

WELL SAID SULAGNA I AGREE WITH YOU.  WHATEVER YOU SAID IS JUST THE WAY OF MAKING UP OURSELVES PSYCHOLOGICALLY STRONG, IF IN CASE INDIA FACES SUCH SITUATION, WE SHALL BE
PREPARED TO FACE SUCH UNTOWARD INCIDENT.  THERE IS NO NEGATIVITY IN YOUR STATEMENT.  HERE NOBODY IS A KID TO BE CAJOLED AND YOU DROVE HOME THE POINT THAT ITS JUST THE WAY
OF MAKING PEOPLE AWARE OF UNTOWARD INCIDENT. SIMPLE.

Folks, I respect all those who support NO and say that India could also have handled the disaster well. Here are ten things which came out well in Japan. Please analyse (without any prejudice or national pride) whether we can match each one of them. (This was a forward received by me).

Also think of what steps we have taken till date after the Gujarat earthquake and the tsunami.  And the way we handled the couple of terrorists holed up in those two hotels in Mumbai (we did not even try to do an Israel act).

And please, let us not live singing glories about our past.  We should strive to achieve our past and regain our lost glories.

Finally, I think there is no harm in learning from others.  My salutes to the Japanese.

So here it goes:

Ten things to learn from Japan-

1. THE CALM Not a single visual of chest-beating or wild grief. Sorrow itself has been elevated.

2. THE DIGNITY Disciplined queues for water and groceries. Not a rough word or a crude gesture.

3. THE ABILITY The incredible architects, for instance. Buildings swayed but didn’t fall.

4. THE GRACE People bought only what they needed for the present, so everybody could get something.

5. THE ORDER No looting in shops. No honking and no overtaking on the roads. Just understanding.

6. THE SACRIFICE Fifty workers stayed back to pump sea water in the N-reactors. How will they ever be repaid?

7. THE TENDERNESS Restaurants cut prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone. The strong cared for the weak.

8. THE TRAINING The old and the children, everyone knew exactly what to do. And they did just that.

9. THE MEDIA They showed magnificent restraint in the bulletins. No silly reporters. Only calm reportage.

10. THE CONSCIENCE When the power went off in a store, people put things back on the shelves and left quietly!

why this un ashamed love towards a foreign country. What made you to think that India cannot do it my daughter? When did India went on a war on other countries? when did Indians made large populations as sex slaves? Do you know many of the practices that Japan has are from Buddhist India. We thought people( it is not my words~ it is words of Ikeda a poet)how to love in harmony with the world. If it is India we will oppose building Nuclear Power Plants at the cost of our villages. We will oppose Coke creating facility and spoiling the environment. We may starve for food; but we will not die with abundance; We live with frugal means. How many disasters happened in India? How did we face them? We face things better than any country and we need to learn from no one. We have thought the world how to get freedom in non violent way; Do you know the fact that the entire revolutions in Egypt and the middle east are based on Gandhian Principles given by an MIT Professor? However, as an Indian i truly suffer for the human misery of all our brothers and sisters in Japan. If you think of helping them~Please do tell me what we have to do. After all vaudivakutubakam is Indian concept.

Fresh Shock for Japan

Again today on 7th April a massive earthquake of 7.1 magnitude also hit off coast of Japan. Tsunami warning was also issued earlier, but later cancelled.

Japan is yet to arise out of the trauma of the last earthquake, Tsunami and the large scale leakage of the radio-activity from Fukushima Nuclear plants.

Yes...it would be a much greater disaster because our system is least concerned about the minimum precautions to be taken before and after a catastrophe. I wonder why the Government still does not reveal its stand over the Nuclear Policies. Do we actually need 25 nuclear power plants in our country at the cost of "LIFE"??

Yes india would be worse by now because we have more population and our system running at present is a bit quite difficult and unpredictable one. So we would be out of game within 10 to 12 hrs. Here we got people like sonia, sheela, Mayawati in north and Karunanidhi in south who would be eating money even out of tsunami relief funds. It sucks but thats the truth because our indian politicians know how to dance on funeral of their voters.

Yes Mr. Vikash. Lessons are learned through accidents / incidents (you may call it Disaster / Catastrophic). Nobody comes with every thing known. They learn it by experience. Japan event is also, a lesson for everybody. After the explosion of the Nuclear reactors, now, Indian Atomic Energy Commission is reviewing its Emergency preparedness in the light of Japan's occurence This was told by its director Mr. Jain. Expecting the unexpected is the basis of Risk Analysis. So does go everywhere.

If you browse around all information & discussions on Supermoon & its effect on Earth, you will go mad to come to a conclusion. So many inferrences & predictions. But, no concrete formulae, its all, based on inferences(observations) from the past 05 events occurred. Many say it is a coincidence .But Scientist strongly says, it has no bearing on these geologiocal happenings.

LET US TOO LEARN NEW LESSONS FROM THIS AND BE PREPARRED FOR ANY EVENTUALITY.

Madam, there is no comparison in JAPAN and INDIA as in japan earth quakes is a normal feature of ther life and that's why buildings are build up keeping this fact in view. SO we can not or we must not try to compare those things in different situations.

But in any case the devastation in india will be more dagerous  nad cost more human lifes.

Hey,

We have Emergency preparedness at National , Regional(state) level or even to district levels. Foreseeable emergencies are visualized by Experts in this field and, accordingly, Emergency Rescue Plan are carried out by Emergency Rescue Team. Periodically, simulated (mock ) event is also, conducted by these people. It involves teams such as Civil aids, Air force, Police, Military, Hospitals, Ambulance services and all voluntary organizations like Red cross etc. Not merely that, they also have an alternative plan prepared . These exercises, also, aim to pool up resources from outside, if required. These mock drills are sometime sand model type (Table top) discussion & many a time, they try it in actual in controlled situation by involving all concerned.

Moreover, you are aware that, after Tsunami in Indonesia, they installed a Tsunami Early Warning system in the Indian Ocean to protect Indian subcontinent. It includes to rise alarm to all havocs of all Classes such as storm, cyclone etc.

The natural risk analysis is being periodically analyzed and reviewed to ensure the required level of preparedness is maintained. It is a multi tier arrangement.

Japan, due to its location in highly seismic zone, has been practicing seismically resistant (not earthquake prrof) design and construction for last 30 years. Inspite of the damages we see on TV and newspapers, its' buildings / bridges and other infrastructure have withstood the earthquake reasonably well, for the aforesaid reason. In Indian context, things would have been substantially different because here we don't enforce any regulation and there is a bye-pass mechanism / short-cut route for everything. No doubt we would have experienced much more casualties and disruption due to failure of buildings / bridges and infrastructure. It's an another issue that our (Indian's) fighting spirit would have helped us overcome such tragedy and bring life back to normalcy soon.

Construction in India is not as strong as Japan. (Bandra Worli Sea Link, Delhi Metro bridges are recent examples. Bandra Worli sea link had cracks within weeks after it was inagurated). There are hardly any earthqauke prone buildings.

Many people live in hillocks & shanties where there is no escape. Add to that the narrow streets, limited fire engines & obsolete equipment. Many rivers & sea faces have been submerged by builders. On top of that there are not many people are trained in disaster management.

Is there any doubt that the that the damage & casualties would have been far greater in India? If there is a tsunami in costal cities like Mumbai, it could lead to a grt loss. Hope the Indian govt. wakes up now & does something.

Sir The question is not the make hype but to make people aware.. Aware that anything can happen anytime and we are not even prepared. We know worst things can happen and we won't be able to do anything. We are not creating a hype, we are making people aware of what can happen!! I hope you understand that.

If India were Japan, the death toll would have reached millions, the number of buildings around the coastal areas would have been totally destroyed, our top vvips would have been evacuated to a safest places, our PMO would have received messages from the Presidents of US and the dignatories from European nations extending solidarity, sending relief materials. On the other side, our media would be debating "Who was at fault - the Nature not giving adequate time to evacuate our citizens, the warning systems that failed in 11th hour causing disaster, decision makers on leave failing to issue orders on time, etc.

Dear Visakh,

Of course, lending support of all kinds to Japan was quite necessary. But in that case, as a matter of commonsense, and being at a responsible position of Principal Correspondent the poster of question could well have asked for suggestions from the members of this forum how to pull out Japan out of such conditions of disaster, but not putting India in that position.

Hi Anuj,

I endorse your views that Kavitha should have come with some practical approach. Instead of putting such type of nasty question putting India in position of Japan for such type of a tragic event, she should rather have come forward with some moral talk with some practical approach or bring forth some viable solution to meet with the unbearable crisis being faced by Japan.

Her negative approach, itself, becomes evident when she appreciated another co-fellow correspondent for supporting her question with some clarification on her behalf, where she herself failed to reply my vital question to her.

BUT, she is still silent on my question, what she wants to prove by getting answers to such a nasty question, as put by her?

Is not it the case of her clear intention to convert even this bad news also as the spicy story with the help of answers to her question?

If she is honest enough I dare her to get my criticism to her question also I also date Sulagna to get my views against the question of Kavitha published in her published along with any story she likes to frame for the media to which she represents, and get the views of the audience in the public in general. newspaper also and invite the views of the audience from public.

THE IRONY OF FATE TO THE MISFORTUNE OF JAPAN'S PEOPLE, AS PER THE LATEST NEWS, IS THAT ONE OF THE NUCLEAR PLANT OF JAPAN HAS ALSO EXPLODED. This would add much more to the woes of Japanese people as they may have to face the similar critical conditions of radio activity as would faced during Hiroshima Nagasaki bombing during World War II. She may like to read the latest News of NEW YORK TIMES herself at the following Link:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/13/world/asia/13nuclear.html?hp

She should be able to know whether this is the opportune time to discuss with such type of nasty question or the media should have tried to muster the whole hearted support from the world over to mitigate such crisis of Japan.

Hi Kavitha, I respect your love for the Nation and have a high respect for all you comments on this platform.

But somewhere I always got a feel that always this kind of negativism spoils the environment. Might be you are not happy with the current picture of India but many still there who after knowing all these facts are living happily.

Coming to the debate no doubt Japan guys are very harworking and can handle the most toughest times but as mentioned by Shrikant we should also not forget the time when bomb blast happened in Jaipur,Mumbai. Indian's have started their life as usual from the next day.

I think the good idea is to write some practical approach(how to deal if any calamities happens) so that people visiting this platform when read can cascade to others

Japan, despite its seismic sensitivity, continues to build, because of which the earth has become unsstable. If you dig and drill too deep, the consequences can be dire. It is surprising that engineers don't realise the environmnetal impact and imbalances.

I really don't want to start new debate within this debate, but whatever point is raised by Mr. Dhingra Sir,is a valid point& fact of current situation.

Media have nothing to do with telling the right & correct stories.

They always want to present it with addition of lot of spice + more hype to attract more & more people for just a sake of TRP & nothing else.

I am taking this side because though we are on a path of development & destructing the mother earth, still appropriate care is taken by us for nature.

& topographical & ecological condition of India is different from Japan, so I don't think so that it is going to happened in India.

& suppose it will happened then we all are united to face the consequences which we already shown to the world in Mumbai in 2005.
