The four-member team at IIT-Kanpur, probing the suicide of Civil Engineering student Madhuri Sale, has come with a plan to help prevent suicides in hostels: replace ceiling fans with pedestal fans. In the last five years, eight IITians have committed suicide—five of them hanged themselves in their hostel rooms. Another proposal is to end allotment of single rooms to students—now, a student gets a single room from the second year. Sale, 21, a resident of Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh and a fourth-year student at IIT-K, hanged herself from the ceiling fan with a rope on November 17. A four-member committee comprising Prof Omkar Dixit, Prof Mukesh Sharma, Prof A K Ghosh and member of the student gymkhana, C Rahul, was formed to probe the reasons. A source told The Indian Express: “We have a strong reason to recommend the replacement of ceiling fans with the pedestal fans in the institute hostels. By replacing the ceiling fan with pedestal fans, we can at least remove one option for students who are depressed due to some reasons or the other.” He claimed that the committee was against the concept of allotting a single room to one student. “With regular interaction with room partners, the students get an opportunity to express their emotions. Even if students are given a room, the wall between two such rooms should be demolished, so that the students get their desired space as well as the company of a fellow student,” he added. He said that efforts have been made to reduce the Internet “addiction” of students. “The Internet speed has been reduced considerably between midnight and 8 am so that students do not download stuff during this time,” he added. The panel, however, is yet to find why Sale committed suicide. “Sale was a good student, and had a Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.8 which is pretty good, and she had done well in most of her exams. She was a brave girl who came from financially poor background and had done considerably well in the past three years,” he said. He asserted that poor academic performance was not the reason behind her suicide. The faculty member said her suicide was a shock for the faculty as well as the students.

It looks so funny. Ending the allotment of single room can reduce the number of suicide. But committee should find the root cause for the depression.

Its mere foolishness.they should decrease the pressure on the students and also find out the reason behind their suicides rather than banning on materialistic things. Its high time they should appoint a counsellor to give athorough boost to students every month.

The reason for the IIT committee to recommend the removal of the  ceiling fan is somewhat surprising !

This may only reduce the ceiling fan option, but there are other options available. The root cause needs to be investigated....

Thanks for the referral, Sharad...

Yes Sharad this problem is to be solved from the root whether it ceiling fan or pedestal fan it really doesn't matter. In any case there are certain individual are there who they are prone to suicide they should be taken care off by the doctors at the time of interview to ensure that they are not prone to suicides.

I believe they should rather try to find out the reasons for Suicides and start with some counseling steps. They must make sure students are not over-pressured. They must make 3 IDIOTS as an inspirational Subjection movie :P

Surprising n funny :) is this all an IIT could come out as a solution to the suicide problem? Typical bookish solution. Its bcaz of mental pressure one comits suicide and not bcaz that a ceiling fan is readily available to hang one self. Hights of stupidity on behalf of the 4 member team. stop the source and not the means... there are many other ways if one decides to commit suicide... merely removing ceiling fans do not suffice.

A typical indian reaction to bolt the stable door after the horse has fled and then to look for scapegoats to blame. Havent the distinguished gents heard of student counsellors ? People who know IITians will testify to the fact that a) resources like living quarters are very poor for the fee charged and b) pressure to excel is so heavy that it gets to even the best of students. I am reminded of the film 3 Idiots as the best example. The profs have to look farther for reasons than to remove ceiling fans etc.as if students do not have other ways of comitting suicide. A person who arrives at the decision to commit suicide will do it any which way since the decision in itself is a bold one.

Generally students who are extraordinary, intelligent smart opt IIT and their aspiration to take up senior managerial positions. If they can`t control themselves, accept and challenge problems of personal nature how capable are they of accepting greater challenges?

This cannot be a solution. Better to explore reasons which led to suicides.

Don Quixotic approach! There are multiple ways a boy can commit suicide! Premier Insitutions of IIT stature admitting creamy layer of the society think of such step is an absurd one! They should really look into the problems of the inmates in a very constructive way. Having visited IITs in the country a number of occasions, I've personally heard stories of students who were forced into such institutions out of parental pressure. Reservation also plays a very damaging role there. There exist a gap between the really talented (inherited gene, perfect coach, sons of high profile parents) who seamlessly carry through under the pressure and those who are there under various reservation schemes and out of parental pressure with different mind set. They felt a tremendous "peer pressure", as also some of them I met in IIT Guwahati mentioned that they are not considered at par with the IIT Chennai, IIT Mumbai or IIT Delhi, and they feel that they are living with the inferiority complex. Every student wants to excel, but inspite of their very hard work, they do not get the equal share in the job market. There are more such maladies, which are mostly under-played to keep the fraternity in good humour! Every IIT institution should introspect these aspects and appoint external behavioural scientists to interact with the student community at regular intervals to curb such suicides in future!
