In a recent news it is said that people will be immortal in near future, as Scientist Ray Kurzweil claims humans could become immortal in as little as 20 years’ time through nanotechnology and with an increased understanding of how the body works.

The 61-year-old American says our understanding of genes and computer technology is accelerating at an incredible rate. He says at the rate our understanding is increasing, nanotechnologies capable of replacing many of our vital organs could be available in 20 years time. And already there is artificial pancreas and neural implants which are available

Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively.

I would like to ask a simple question people, will this really happen?

It may be possible. But at very high expence. Time frame is too short. It will take another 50 years. Sorry to say but once again humans are working against nature's law.

Just imagine Future if this happens for all human beings.

Death rate will be nearly  zero. Birth rate, by force you have to make it zero or be ready for human flood.

Rest I dont want to imagine. Its very horrible.

I don't see this happening in a very long time, even though the scientist claims of with technological advancements these days and with nanotechnology being more and more popular, but the fact is it would be difficult to understand the whole mechanism of a body which is very complex for that matter and to make these artificial nanobots to work like a normal cell does will be very hard to make things work in this regard, i may be the wrong person to tell whether this will work or not, but then whatever till now we have see things around us regarding these technological advancement in a general way, will immortality be possible? i don't think so and one has to go through the cycle(Life & Death) to maintain the balance and there will be very less takers for this theory from the scientist.

Dear friends,

In the vedic period ,it is already clearly defined that if we can really make use of law of inverse proportion,Then there is no death for human beings and acn achieve immortailty. But now days we are looking for improvement things like chemcially manufactured material for keeping one fit. How ever, the truth lies within in ourself .For example .Siddars, saints in himalayas.  They seems to be very imaginary but it is true. So,I think if you go close to nature cycel then the human being can live longer.

yes..it will happen ..becoz now scientists had found out the genes for ageing..it simply means a lot....a lot can be predicted and achieved. so within a short span of time the answer of this question becomes a big YES......

As you all must be aware that what ever has been said in past i.e, thousand years ago is now and has been prove to be quite ehical and practical, whether it be kabir's " Kal kare so Aaj kar ...." or Rahim's "Rahiman nijman ki vyatha"

May God bless us if that comes true

I am fully agree with Bindu's statement , understanding & implementing over the most complex design of nature is something close to impossible, even if one is able to mimic all the organs & structure then also.

Seemingly innocuous topic but I am overwhelmed with the variety of responses.  This platform sure is an intelligent one!

I have high expectations of nano-technology.  If I could have been a part of the research, I would have been very glad.  This technology sure is likely to help mankind.

Artificial organs will have a role.  Existing applications are also a boon.  So we expect future implants to be useful.

But one paradox bugs me.  On the one hand we are advancing with high end technology.   On the other hand, all our medical research starts with experiment on rats.  By the time we reach humans, it is a very long, long time.  I appreciate the regulations since experiment on humans without eliminating danger to health is essential.  However, the two are extremes.  Following needs to be considered :

  • Beyond 35, when eyesight decreases, we simply look to buy spectacles but make no effort to understand why it has decreased.  Same about hearing although widespread use of hearing aid is not there.  This is mostly ignored.
  • When teeth get affected, the dentist looks usually to remove them.  Another tooth may take its place but the stability  and communicability the original perfectly connected tooth would have provided to the body is simply ignored.
  • Loss of libido or lower frequency depresses humans but causes are beyond human comprehension if the present approach to health research is any indication
  • Knee replacement and similar remedies are a remunerative medical specialisation but I am compelled to state that very few can afford it.  Even for those who can afford it, 90% of such surgeries can be avoided.  There is a better method.
  • Diabetes is accepted.  We are conducting more research on how to transplant an artificial pancreas into the body than looking at reversing the situation
  • Hyper/hypo tension is accepted as normal and one is compelled to take a tablet a day.  Can't this be avoided?
  • Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease etc. are simply endured.   Leave alone the cause, the disease itself is not properly understood.
  • Kidney, Heart, Brain, Lungs and the nervous/digestive/circulatory systems etc. are not properly understood.  One thing I can state with confidence is that there is sufficient intra knowledge on these but 'inter' relationships are not understood and no meaningful research is taking place.

I have conducted research for over nine years and discovered many things on the above. I have reversed or at least delayed many of the above.  Our healthcare professionals are no where near to dealing with mortality and I dread the day they may have to deal with immortality.

If you want to experience IMMORTALITY ... reduce rate of breath cycle rate per minute (INCOMING/OUTGOING) to ZERO or near ZERO 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000(to the power Infinity)1 since at that rate ... AGE will equal Infinity, because as breathing rate reduces AGE increases ....

Our Ancient RISHIS lived for 500 and more, because their breathing rate/cycle was 1-2 cycles in more than one minute i.e., they inhaled/exhaled fewer times and took several minutes for one cycle ... but it has to happen on its own but not by force, else death waits for you !

Let us not have wishful thinking ... and let us be wise and respect LAWS OF NATURE, TECHNOLOGY or Nano-counterpart are/and works at BODY-CONSCIOUS ...

It cannot replace or create THAT ... which is conscious/knows that BODY is/exists and also knows that, THAT knows that Body is and is Self - Organizing, generating, managing/maintaining and regulating where Nano-family cannot enter

Finally, THAT is the mother of Nano family and ALL OTHERS ... at NON-BODY level, which the Nano-family cannot enter ...

We all are aware that the world is million years old and its true that mqny deifferent species of organisms existed and is not existing as of now. Many new discoveries of many new organisms existance is in progress and so is nano tech a spec of science that we are trying to fight it and conquer the nature's unimaginable balance maintenance over the years. We forget to understandthat besides the earthly facors the impact of other planets also do have impact on nature which we can see where deserts change into water bodies with rainfall, the cold zones tend tro become temperate, the waterbodies get vanished.

There are many natural medical and scientific wonders that yet man is after seeking the truth. Its encouraging to know the scientific reasonings but we are far from becoming immortals,

We all are discussing as though many blind people are trying to find the way.

No harm in for search but cannot think of being immortaqls both are not anyway nearer.

Well our Belief system clearly states that every Living Organism has a Body and a Soul. No Living organism is complete without these two.

Hence we may and can do anything with body but on Soul the Right belongs to GOD , as Humans I donot think we will be able to do anything with Soul , the copyright for that belongs to GOD only .

Mr. Jaykumar, what have we achieved by discovering ageing genes? and what will we do by that knowledge ? Do you mean to say scientists with take out those genes or replace with some other genes ? If this is what you actually mean, than you must also be knowing there is not a single area of our body which doesn't have ageing genes. Even the smallest of the small to the biggest organ, every organ of our body has these genes. In such a situation, how can they take out the genes ? We are made up of genes. If they are replaced, then what will be our existence ?

I can answer this question in a simple one word answer. "IMPOSSIBLE". And not only in long time...It is never possible....come on, be practical. Nobody can ever live forever. Its nature's law. He who has taken birth has to die. How can man even think of breaking the laws of nature and just think how frightful scene it will be if everyone becomes immortal, with so many deaths with one person in every 3 seconds, our population is going out of control. What will happen if no one dies ? we won't even be able to stand at a place !!! And there are innumerable. If scientists have to change all the genes and DNA, our complete body needs to get changed. Both internal and external since genes are everywhere. Then what will be our existence ? Didn't this simple thing come into their "scientific" minds even once?

Though it is possible to replace all the organs, brain transplant is a challenging task. And neuron cells are such a complex system, which are also susceptible to the ageing process. Reviving them to overcome ageing will be a tough task.

For the individuals to be immortal, the world should be immortal. If the opinions of leading scientists like James Lovelock are taken into account, it is clear that man has already endangered the existence of life in this world. Added to this, the nuclear arms and their power of annihilating the world!

A selfish man can never dream to become immortal.

The scientists have to bear in their minds that there is something called we have called MIND which really makes the human being.

It is not just blood and organs which makes the body.the brain controls a lot of things with mind(I wonder where it is situated).Without these rejection of the duplicate organs and the blood is always there.

So I think the immortality of man is and will be just a dream.

I hope it will be a dream all thru eternity. With such a short lifespan man acts as if he is immortal,if he is immortal then Earth will be the first casuality and Mankind with all technology will be doomed along with it

WHERE is Immortality ?

I too  agree with Bindu. But in case it happens also then mankind is heading for doom. As going against nature will never succeed. So, lets hope his claim is false and give a thought to what will happen to the population of the world if all ofus becomne immortal.
