No people should not be allowed to elect PM directly. The reason being they are not clear of selecting their minister and other leaders and are not utilizing their voting rights properly. So when they are mature enough to elect their ministers then we can think of it.

Yes,,it should be. But all the nominees should be skilled enough to handle this posts. There should not be any nominee selected on the basis of cast, religion or gender.  First of all this thinking should be removed from the minds of our people,,,then only we can escalate our growth.

I think we all the literate people have a nagetive thinking and we talk about the people who are illiterate. That means we are follow them. If we want to change the mind of the people and make a voice for that kind of act then every thing is possible.

The second thing is that the person who will fight for that post should be a national leder ans also from the national parties.

A good debate.  Yes, PM should be directly elected by the people, where there is no number games.  He/she could able to take decisions. We have a PM who dont have any appealing to masses.  His actions are prone to censorship.  Unfortunately,  he cant take decisions on his won. This should change.

The ruler of a country should the selection of the people. The name differs such a president and primeminister. And it is sad that in a democracy the ruler is selcted by party leadership and MP-s, which makes a mockery of the sytem. The Ruler has to be selected by the people only and he can select the ministers from the members of parliament and lead the country for the next five years. If he does any corrupt activity then he has to be prosecuted for that action aslo after the term. There should not be any exception to him after the term of service.

I think the time has come to change. Now India is capable of taking it's own decisions. There is a need to vote for candidate not for the party, i think it has started happening. So we must start taking actions to change the way PM is selected. I appreciate the process of selecting President, so it would be good if we adopt some method of that kind, to select Prime Minister of India.

idea is good that our PM should be a independent candidate. but literacy level of our people is very low. I suggest if we can elect our PM in a process similar to we elect our president. once, a PM is elected then he/she will be there for 5 years like the president.

It takes the transparancy in the PM office work. He can do work without any pressure of his party leadership. For that an amendment is required in our costitution.

This is a bad proposal, rather we may discuss other 'electrol reforms' whic may be undertaken.

Our PM is

- the leader of the Council of Ministers

- he selects his team, may change them or drop them

- he is the link between the President and Ministers

Our constitution writer has adopted a good way federal set up with parliamentary democracy and because our citizens are not enough mature who can understand the real situation and they don't understand the value of vote. so what ever they have adopted its giving the best set up no need to change but the way of working and effective utilization of all the 3 poles has to be realized

Thanks for referral, Ravli.I support your views.

We are still in the process to know the importance of the election & hardly choose the right candidate because most of us are voting for the party & not for the candidate. Therefore P.M.should not be elected directly by the people.

Direct election of PM can be made possible only when majority of the voters are having a clear vision on INDIVIDUAL'S RIGHTS & LIABILITIES! Citizens should be educated enough to understand the power of their franchise. Then they should mandate in a very judicious way. Till then this cannot be a success!

Rather than selecting the PM directly , as a first step , I would say that TV debates should become compulsory , so that even the remotest person has a chance to listen to the ideologies of the different parties , or at least where they stand on various crucial issues affecting the nation.

With channels welcoming user inputs , citizens can directly question the party representatives about national issues such as Kashmir , fuel price rise , but also about regional issues such as lack of development in the north-east.

I completely agree with your opinion Ms. Ravali.

Our people have not enough maturity to elect the proper MLAs/MPs first.

At the time of elections their votes are being sold for money/gifts. How they will be able to elect the PM of a country. First they should feel their voting rights should not be sold in lieu of money/gifts.

Even though India is a democratic nation a large chunk of the so called voters are not democratic...They are fervent about the unhealthy political competition for power and the spoutings of their self acclaimed leaders who hardly contribute for the betterment of society and nation...So unless and untill the mindset of Indian voters ( excusing the exceptions) doesnt change its a big NO

Votes in India till now being sold. Voters are uneducated and unaware . More than 30% people are not voting every time. This situation is not good for any direct election for such a portfolio.

I agree with Ravali - as a nation, we are not literate enough to know and appreciate the options and make meaningful unbiased choices; also regionalism, chauvinism, and sheer numbers make direct election of a PM or the Ministers a travesty of good selection.

This is not to say that our existing system makes possible good selection - as scores of Cabinet Ministers have proven in the past. But I think that still the existing system is better than direct selection. One day maybe with more maturity and national integration, direct selection may be possible, but not now...

Until India is 100% literate this action can create disaster to the country. At present I doubt 50% of the Indian population knows what exactly the job of an Indian Prime minister. A country like India with corrupted political back ground, we can never think of this idea now.

The debate on the subject is as old as our constitution. The solution to the present day  problems does not lie in changing the form of government. The founding fathers of the constitution had dicussed the issue in  depth and had opted for parliamentary form of government. The executive should be responsible to the legislature which represents people who are sovereign in democracy.

The primary responsibility in a democracy  lies with the people. They should exercise their right to vote judiciously. They should see to it that representatives elected by them remain responsible to the people. If needed, electoral reforms should be undertaken to ensure this.It is futile to blame the leaders if the people cannot act wisely.

In countries, where the population is mature direct election by the people is possible. But this is hardly the case in any country. Hence, you have a hierarchical system, where lower groups elect higher level representatives till the final committee elects the PM. This helps to channelize cost, time and effort in a constructive manner even though lobbying and other factors may play a part in the final election process.

Additionally, when everybody is electing a single person, the final outcome may not be truly justified and as the whole population mass is too huge, it will not be very effective.....

No peoples shud not be directly involved in selecting the PM... following parameters can b pointed out as Reason:

1. Any voting Individual will prefer the PERSON from his Local Geographical Area only... this may lead to unbiased out put of the Elections...

2. The Leaders who have a great leadership and deserving the place may not get any chance even to serve the Nation... at any level

3. it will also increase the cost of Overall elections through High security, More Individuals involvement at work place etc..

4. It also carries HIGH RISK which is not suggested for a post like PRIME MINISTER...

5. Corruption may lead to improper results which then whole Nation can suffer...

6. Beside all these... required level of transparency can not be bring to the voters..

That Is why i firmly believe Individuals shud not b given an opportunity to vote for PM post...
