A few years ago, PepsiCo tried a unique experiment on its assembly line. The company put a hearing-impaired person on a job that required visual inspection. They found this was actually a boon; with no aural disturbance to hinder concentration, the employee’s performance was outstanding, compared with his peers.

Similarly there is at least one KFC outlet in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, in which about 70% of the employees are hearing-and-speech impaired.

But, will these special employees be as productive as normal employees?? as at the end of the day productivity is what matters...

its we, who need to decide where to place a dumb person on a job that makes use of his other 4 senses to work and get the best out of him/her...physically challenged employees too are a part of the society and have the same kinda grey matter as we do...productivity of them cannot be questioned as long as we know how to get the best out of them just as any other employee...so my ans. is a big YES...

I disagree with Dipika - I think given some time - they will also be as productive as normal people. At times normal people loose focus whereas specially abled people may be more focused.

There are lots of organisations with placements of person as if round pegs in square holes. The outcome as compared to them will be clearly comparable. They may be blind by organs, but definatley not blind by mind.So definately they get a chance of identity and as such deliver the job with much more responsibility .

Specially Gifted People can do a great job especially in jobs which do not use their impaired senses. Also most of them have self respect and pride in their jobs and try to excel in them. Of course the productivity depends on how the organisation uses them. Instead of organisation trying to use them as fulfilling a social cause, companies should use give proper training to them and use them effectively. In fact I believe they can be more productive than normal people with attitude problems.

yes these special employees are special. if an organization is willing to stay for long, they should build rocks house instead of breaks house.definetly its a challanging job for HR team to place each rock( employee) at right place according to its unique abilities.

The fact that differently abled persons like above are given an opportunity to perform is a very concrete step towards utilizing our capacities to full. I support this fact with full faith.

It gives immense pleasure to read some articles where we find concerns of corporate world for social welfare. In context to your experience , I would term it as extremely bad for a company like KFC but my view on the other side is that many companies like KFCs are no more directly involved, rather maximum number of outlets are run by francisees who are little concerned about the long term impact. Companies do make policies to serve in the real sense but in the interest of making large profits the franchaisees are least bothered about how and where to place them. If you agree with me, every man in this planet has got a talent of his own in a specific field. But ACADEMIC PROFESSIONALS have outlined good vs bad. My point is if one really wants to create space for special employees, one must have a clear vision for their perfect placement also.

it is not all about productivity though.... and sometimes the so-called inability of these differently able people enables them to keep themselves motivated to achieve the desired goals and helps them focus more on achievements than acclaims

I think today organizations have become shrude in the way they do their business, and having these special employees as a part of their CSR initiatives is a good thing, but I don't think that their productivity levels are that great. Infact the last time I had been to a KFC it took me a longer time to place my order with hearing impaired people taking the orders. And the same would be for others in other organizations as communicating becomes all the more difficult and the productivity of these special employees and others will be lost. Though organizations get these special employees for a much cheaper annual package, but interms of work I don't think
