India Ranks 134th In the Human Development Index , this utter failure will lead to serious social tensions.

This year according to the Human Development report published by the UNDP India's position remains unchanged at 134th.This despite the fact that lakhs of crores of Government money is being spent on the social sector. Where is this money going ?

Given the governments' fixation with GDP figures a failure to address this issue of inclusion in the growth agenda of a vast multitude of Indian's will lead to the inevitable rise in serious social unrest jeopardising the very goal that the Indian government is fighting for.

Let me start with a small story- the other day For the first time since it was built I visited the south city mall in Kolkata. The experience left me a very sick person. I was shocked to the point of being by the sheer scale and brazenness of the consumption war that had been unleashed upon the city .

Here was a place that was the inner sanctum sanctorium of capitalism in a city/state that had voted the supposedly communists to power for 35 long years! Here was a place that was just the cold hard secular place where you went to spend spend and spend some more. relationships did not matter. Your value would be dictated the strength of your purse.I could not help but keep thinking that if this be the ultimate face of progress then this is something that I definitely did not want.

Coming out I was immidiately shocked into realisation  that unless we do something to make growth more inclusive we are sitting on a social cauladron.
