Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia feels the country would have been better off without hosting the Commonwealth Games given the organisational chaos that has marred the build-up to the October 3 to 14 event in Delhi.

The much-delayed and perhaps the most expensive Commonwealth Games ever have now been hit by allegations of wide-scale corruption and Bhutia said India never had the infrastructure to host such a mega-show.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Wu988HdNpiM/SxJFSs3VUqI/AAAAAAAABKM/ljw-ZVORnVM/s1600/delhi2010+work+site.jpg

"We should not have taken a decision to host the Games. The infrastructure is not ready. Look at the situation, the grounds are not ready. Even in hockey, there are not many Astroturfs in India. Even a nation like Malaysia is better-placed to host the Games. We should not have bid for the Games,"

So, What do you think people, India shouldn't have become CWG host....don't you think so??

I quite agree with what Baichung bhutia has to say here, we were never ready for this kind of an event, and forget bidding for Olympics, thank god India did not get any of the olympic bids that they bid for....when daily one or other fiasco we are seeing interms of CWG preparation, nothing is going right for them, starting Bad media coverage, non completion of stadiums, traffic is chaos in Delhi, and Beijing which had so much of volunteers who had applied for helping olympic games a similar kind of voluntary programme was initiated for these CWG games, but nobody seems to be interested in taking up these volunteer programmes. And now Suresh kalmadi facing virtual judicial probe for the corruption allegations every thing is going in the wrong direction for CWG, India was much better of not becoming the CWG host.....

INDIA is a great country to host such events. Our corruption matters are only hampering the high stakes involved in making the event as success. When the bid was WON we were proud of it, but now look into these scandals.. its a matter of shame to let loose this opportunity. I think we have many capable persons who can make it BIG SUCCESS, Hope we hand it to those people asap.

There is a lesson to be learned from this: Never bite off more than you can chew. I admire my country's confidence in aspiring to host the CWG but the utter failure India finally portrayed proves our incapability to put up a mega event. Indeed, a national shame that will be carried on in our future history books.

Yes. Looking at the current situation, I would definitely agree with Mr. Kiran. India should NOT have become the CWG host. I am very proud of being an Indian, but I cannot deny the fact that India does not have the required infrastructure to host the third largest multi-sport event in the world (after the Summer Olympics and the Asian Games), the Commonwealth Games. There is a very common saying "cut your coat according to the cloth". I belong to the manufacturing industry, and I would like to give a very small common example. When we accept a big order from a prestigious client, and we complete it on time and provide the best quality, we win goodwill in the business along with profits. But, when we accept a big order from a big client, and we cannot complete it or we provide bad quality, we lose much more than financial losses. I think, the situation is same for us now with the CWG, because, at this point of time, when the Games are less than 60 days away, our country's prestige is at stake.

Yes i agree that India has done a right thing by bidding for and winning the bid of CWG. I think we have all resources and capabilities to host such grand event. The reason behind current problems is mis-management of committees and corruption in few departments

Thanks for the referral Mr.Kiran Kumar and Mr.Manoj Kumar.

While supporting your views posted, but both sides accepted the negative and positive aspects of conducting this mega sports event in India. Why so much scandals/corruption take the lead in our country.... the politicians... the bureaucrats.... I do know what to write..... This shows, however, our inefficiency and incompetence in organizing such international games in India.

Mr Kiran nice debate,

I think that it was a step taken in the direction of progress when CWG was announced in India, but by the way everything has turned out we have taken a lot of step back words.

And Kiran I wholeheartedly agree with you. To get ready for such a huge occassion it takes at least 7 to 10 years and I belive South Africa has created the infrastructure for world cup football for almost ten years.

At the same time with our number of heads this time frame may be cut by say a year or two but you need honest people to run the show. Unfortunately if you want to catch the culprit you will find that entire OC officials. May some more yes I agree we are under any circumstances not ready for the game.

Say for example if there will be 100 mm rainfall one day in Delhi the OC officials will say we cant help it is an act of God. God help us to keep the prestize of our country intact.

I would like to disagree with most of them who are on the other side as in the first place we don't have infrastructure and we don't have quality athletes to take on  all the international sportspersons, we know our track record a mere 3 medals in olympics from a country which has a billion plus of population, then what were they thinking by conducting CWG games, winning medals by bribing the officials, or facing nations wrath after their dismal performance in these games, India is still developing, first provide food for all and then go for these fancy games which might attract few investment in future...

Yes, India should not have become CWG host by investing whopping amount. Instead they should have used these amount for economic development activities. Do we need to spend lavish amount on prestigious games like this? If you say yes for India's prestigeous purpose, then think about the poor deprived people in India who are still dying of starvation. According to World Bank estimates 42% of lndia falls below the international poverty line of $1.25 a day. When our own people dying of starvation, do we need to spend extravagant amount on unnecessary things to just show off our prestige. Instead these amounts can be spent on upliftment of deprived people of the society. I am not completely opposing this event. Let them host this event after making sure that their country men are not suffering because of this event.

Dear Kiran, Thanks for posting this topic as debate.

I support your views. & looking at current fiasco & statements issued by different leaders we are hardly ready for it.& now they are exchanging words for avoiding their responsibility.

Actually, it is good opportunity for us to create ourself as Brand India, but now it is of no use to discuss these things . We are still in process to complete the stadium.

& it is the only failure of one man Mr.Suresh Kalmadi . We also have same type of experience for 2008 Youth Common Wealth Games which was held at Pune. They are still preparing the approach road which is going to the stadium.

Dear friends,

In my opinion this topic is not valid now. This was created almost 2-3 months back when every single day brought so much bad news about the preparation of CWG whether it is completing the stadiums...or floating and awarding the tenders etc.....

And now I feel the whole scenerio is changed....

India is emerging as the super economic power, though there are inconsistencies in its economy.  World is recognizing it. But the media has given a negative propoganda on it. Why should not India host this event, even it has the caliber to host Olympics.  But, the Govt. shall not remain a spectator, instead it would have taken a proactive steps.

Left alone to the politicians, we will never be ready. So when are we going to host a games ?

It is better this way, at least we would learn from this and be better prepared the next time around. As a nation we have to take it as a collective failure. At least now our citizens should be aware and start asking politicians in their constituency all the uncomfortable questions.

It is a matter of pride that India is hosting an international event. These are the times when we can showcase ourselves to the International community. Nothwithstanding all our problems, shortcomings, bad governance, corruption, rural poverty, bad infrastructure, chalta hai attitude, jugar etc etc, for which there are solutions and remedies, we must ensure that the CWG brings in good name to our country. Please remember South Africa's recent accomplishments when they organised World Soccer tournament.

I sincerely accept and acknowledge the argument of Sri Bhimrao.

In my opinion, Indians are the most talented, efficient and more capable. But the vitious circle, may be corrupt officials or politicians who are responsible for the bad name.

I recall that in a Tamil Cinema named "Citizen", the hero argues before the court and suggests the punishment for the corrupt officials or politicians as below:

The property in their name, in the name of their wives, children must be forfeited to Govt. The educational qualifications of all of them should be withdrawn. Lastly, their citizenship ( of all the persons connected to the corrupt) must be cancelled. None of them should be allowed to get any ration, anything from any shop and their children, grand children should not be admitted in schools or colleges.

They need not be sent to jail but the above punishment to be given "

Will it be possible. Can it be given. If possible and if given, India will become Number ONE Country in all aspects. All other Country persons will come to India on H1 or L1 visa to work in our organisations. All sports events can be arranged in India.

India is capable.

In spite of owning a large chunk of

world's population, our merits in

international sports continues to be among the lowest.

Hosting such major sports events the right way, could definitely

act as a catalyst in improving sports in India as a whole. There  is no doubt about India's capability to do it.

However, instead of planning and executing it efficiently and in a practical way with a futuristic outlook, it seems that the government has given away the whole thing to a set of wrong guys who converted CWG, into their own 'common wealth grabbing' opportunity.

First of all, Government should have set up a new township for this in any city suburb instead of in the busy area in New Delhi. The whole township could have later converted and used as a National Sports Acadmey.

Rampant corruption in public works is the common curse in this country. The main reason for this is the systemic failure in the government machinery.

Planning, execution and running of every government job is the responsibility of the bureaucrats in each system which is the purpose and justification for their existence.

Other than just systemic failures, what else can be the reason for the beureaurats allowing a some uncanny politicians and their chelas' spoil everything in this country? Is there no channel for the bureaucrats to report misdeeds under their jurisdiction to Secretaries in the central ministries and they in turm independantly report these to Principal Secretary / PMO and further up there, on matters of such irregularities of grave concern?

From the way the Paliament function these days, it is in vain to expect any  respite or remedy on these issues there. It is high time somebody at the helm of affirs or the apex court directly  have a look into these aspects, and quicker this done, the better for the nation.

Dear Kiran

Let's make it simple:

India should not have allowed "So many self servicing corrupt to flourish and prosper and become all powerful."

That single step would ensure not only the best in games but as well positively impact lives of citizen of Indians who are in getting pushed to misery everyday.

Thanks Kiran, Manoj and Omkar for refer.

INDIA WILL SUCCESSFULLY AND SAFELY ORGANIZE CWG EVENTS.

Indians are fond of debating on any issue (or non-issue) and providing their valuable opinion, free of cost, whether required or not. On the top of it, we have Media, who consider themselves expert of all situations. They keep on forgetting that, their undue interests in financial transactions of CWG, is making progress of work difficult. China aloso worked in the same way, and made Olympics2008 successful. Only thing is that, media, that breathe on the neck is there in China. And Chinese people whole heartedly supported games preparation.

Despite of all, CWG will he successfully held in Delhi

Thanks Mr. Kiran. It is perfectly fine for us to host CWG. These things gives impetus to a lot of economic activities & development to the country where they are hosted. Proper planning and corruption free environment is required no doubt. But this does not means we will keep waiting till the corruption is not in our country and every infrastructure is in place only than we will host CWG or any event of this stature. We have to keep our head above the water and see the shore in the hope that we will reach the shore one day. If the hope is dead than every else is irrelevant.

Thanks,Mr MANOJ for reference. The phrase is misconstrued and so i will go for 'why India should have refused to host the CWG at the first place. At least people finally came to conclusion that there was very serious flaw in Organizing a "MEGA EVENTS".What is the remedy? The remedy is that GOI should outsource such events and exercise nominal control.

There is nothing wrong in trying to something. If the outcome is not favorable u receive criticism and the other way round. Since India is a groing economy and an emerging super power howsting the CWG was a right step towards establishing itself. Yes but the present state of CWG preperations has revealed the ugly side. So i think that the willingness to host the CWG was not wrong but the execution went wrong and terribly wrong somewhere.

CWG reminds me about the britishers rule. everything in CWG is related to supremacy of britishers for eg. queens batton.members of CWG were colony of britishers.also the standard of CWG does not matches with the world sports standard.

Hi,We know what is our status in Olympics. We have to encourage the sports and games in a much more higher level. In the case of sports  and games our new generation becomes hero worshipers. To bring them to hero level we should encourage the events like CWG to attract the youths to sports and games.

When we do anything for the first time, we are bound to see some or the other setbacks but to say that we shouldn't have bid for the Commonwealth games is an unnecessary aggrandizing of of the hick ups. Its like accepting defeat even without fighting. I feel the media have criticized [rightly so] the Organizing commetie & various agencies involved but its little more than what was required. I think before even starting the games we are writing them off. Lets give them a fair chance to succeed.

When you draw comparison with the Olympics vis-a-vis medals, we need to break the stalemate between "stadium would precede sport persons or vice versa". I think that with the commonwealth games, we did find the answers and I hope that all would be well at the end of the day although I must admit that we surely could have done better terms of budget, time and corruption.

Being part of the international fraternity of nations, india should take its proper share of such events. Otherwise india's image in the global market will be affected adversely.

The fact that our politicians and bearocrats are incompetent in managing the infrastructure for these things is hardly the excuse to back out of our committments.

We should take it as a lesson and dump corrupt people and learn.

Just   understand how difficult it is to organize public events, moreso, it is of sports. May be a political event, then there is a group behind to turn the stone. Always, there is a murky deal everywhere, but without it, it is really difficult to do public service.Let us hope for the better.

hello Kiran,it is not wrong to organise this kind of international events.even in past we have done so(Asian games in Delhi),question is,how far we are capable to run the show without any debacles.recent scandals are really shameful but that should not become cloud on entire event.still we are having good and able administrators to take over.every one should think that together they can achieve the success and not to point out any individual.
