Yeah, however i think, this can be rightly said as "India uses only those part of democracy that help politicans/corporates a levish uninterrupted life. They have made those parts of democracy very powerful, that helps them get elected and get the chair. But weakened those parts, or hid them, which gives power of punishing the government by the people. Eg. All the systems that take complaints are either absent or work under full corruption. They never take intrest in empowering those parts of democracy. :( "

Our irony is no single party is emerging with two-third majority. In a situation like coalition politics, we have allowed regional parties to take rein, and the centre is left with no chance to buckle under pressure all the time. India's position is weakened from all directions. The so-called guardians of our system are in the looting spree! No accountability whatsoever! We are seeing unruly behaviour in all segments of population. In the name of secularism, the very fabric of nation and its very deep tradition is under trouble! In all, a handful of people, say less than 50,000 in number, are ruling and ruining the country. If they are sidelined, probably sense of good will will prevail!

Our democracy supports not only inefficiency, but also non-accountability and corruption. The multi-party system and the presence of 'independents' in our legislatures make it almost impossible to have a government which can take prompt action, punish the guilty and take the country forward. Our administrative set-up fails to assign responsibility for mistakes on any one person. So most corrupt practices go unhindered. To save our democracy, first the 'independents' should be abolished, and preferably have a two-party system.

The other day Supreme court gave a direction that the food grains available with the government be distributed among the deserving poor instead of allowing that to rot in the godowns. Pat came the reply that the courts cannot decide the policies of the government from no less than the Prime Minister. Inefficiency when pointed out is not rectified but excuses r put forth instead of correcting the situation

I'd rather say People use Democracy as an excuse for inefficiency or sheer laziness to get up and sort something out. Not everybody does that but No person can stand up and say "I never blamed the other for something I couldn't do." Its all a passing-the-blame game going on.

No complaint is published from any foreign delegate at the CWG arrangements. And there is no bridge falling down and the one which fell was put up again within 3 days a record time by the army team. Also CWG has been officially announced as an Indian success story by media across the world. Why should we be critical about it. China definitely is ahead of India today and being a communist turning democratic, the old discipline is paying off for an extended period. This new model of democracy is again lead by one unquestioned supreme guy who could take on wrong decision creating a disastrous situation to the event or country as a whole. In India this is not the case. Although Mr.Kalmadi has resigned and the accounts were speaking different numbers from what was the fact, the games as an event are a success as it is clearly visible. And the economy per say has flourished and responded well to the boom of the last decade. The projection of 9% growth is still possible given the corruption levels and high inefficiency that is rampant in every nook and corner of the government set up across the country. We are used to working at extremities and democracy definitely gives liberty to delay or dilute the productivity and efficiency, sometimes deliberately. But corruption is China is well known and people who visit the country would not be able to feel it at the outset. But did that stop the economic transition of China that has posed new challenges to the world economies. If not, the same applies to India as well. As a famous saying goes, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" so we should not read it as inefficiency. The transition is still on and we are seeing the changes in a lot of things including people's approach to problems. So democracy is in our DNA and efficiency relates to our response to situations, the fatigue or the "Nawabi" mindset. When compared to the US and Europe today, our think tank at the top is doing an extremely good job attracting FDI into the country inspite of the recession and resistance to outsourcing, etc. When seen from the global view there is nothing special about inefficiency meaning it is just as good or bad in every other country (i do agree that the infrastructure is pathetic and needs an extreme revamp :-)). So India is using democracy to give new challenges to outdo the current performance and this transition may not amount to inefficiency.Things take time as much as it would anyways, to change.

There is nothing wrong with Democracy. It is only we the people who allow the politicians to exploit and erode the values of Democracy. Instead of debating the bad effects of democracy, let us all come together to generate a movement that can flush out corruption ,exploitation and inefficiency. Let us remember we are a biliion plus , and if we want we surely can bring about a drastic change in our national leader ship. Every movement starts when one among us dares to give a wake up call...and then makes it his/her purpose of life. Something similar happened some 60 years ago, when a hardly clad man called Gandhi gave the British the call quit India..
