Indian Monsoon

India is proturding into north [part of] "Indian Ocean". From Kanyakumari if one heads in 180 degree down south, the nearest land is at Antatrica  which is 10500 km away from main land.  The entire strech is "Indian Occean".  This vantage location gives India advantage and a unique South West monsoon winds orginating from Mascarene High [ROUGHLY 30 degree South / 60 Degree East] in the Indian Ocean near Mauritius, gives a cross equtorial flow of mosture laden winds.  This moisture laden SWly winds gives copious rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Kongan & Goa, and Mumbai. The monsoonal wind strenth is predominant along 14-15 Degree North latitude which comprises the major catchments ares of rivers like  Kaveri, Krishna & Godavari. The variation of rainfall in space and time is large and this leads to drought or flood.

But, do you know, these monsoon winds were also helpful for Arabian traders who invaded Indian west coast using the South Westerly wind and intruded to inlands through river mouth.  That is why one can see more Muslim hamlets along the west coastand east coast too.  Similarly the SWly winds were helpful for Greeks, Romans, Portugues, Dutch and English to invade Indian west / east coast for trade. Further it is this SWly wind which enables Arab muslims to trade in Indonesia, as Indonesia is the main destination for the merchants (and was known as 'FAR EAST") for trading spices, sandalwood, pearl etc. {That is why Indonesia has become a Muslim dominated nation in the world]. 

Even in India the Arab traders first transhiped horses and trade them with the local rulers.  In exchange the rulers awarded vast land area. The Arab traders never converted the locals into Muslims. Instead they settled in Indian territory and married Indian woman and proliferate. Where as the Arab kings and Chief tains who invaded India from west ruled North India and converted citizens to Musilm faith. Arabian Sea was a vulnurable route for invasion.
