Indian Railways has made new records in network expansion during financial year 2010-11. The Railways has made the progress of construction of 709 kilometres of new lines in the year 2010-11 as compared to the annual average progress of 180-kilometres new lines since 1947!! This means it has progressed four times of that in 2008-2009. Is this pace of construction enough?

Slow & steady wins the race.

We should congratulate the railway officials & workers for their achievement, & their delivery, even after fighting against all odds.

As, it is very easy to criticize anybody for their work done, but need lion's heart to give applauds for their contribution & as a civil engineer I am proud of their contribution to nation;s growth. Thanks, for referral Pragya.

The demand supply ratio has to be kept in eye and not the multiplication of progress. There are many horizos which we need to conquer yet.

M'm,I do agree with you ,as far as pace is concerned. But railway being a social organization which operates on subsidized passenger fares is quite a creditable job they have done. The plan is afoot to add more capacities,High speed track,a separate freight corridors, metros development. Within 10-20 years, railway will change the face of the country with faster freight  and passenger movement.

Yes,we should kept the demand ratio in our eyes. Indian rail way may create a record by creating 709 kilometers of new lines in the year 2010-11 but we have to progress more and more.

As per McKinsey Study of Indian Logistics, 5 dedicated freight corridaors required to ease up the logistical congestion generally, and to fasten the average distance covered by any cargo on a given day either by road or rail. Where are they on this front?Railways stopped thinking strategically and for nations benefit eversince, it became a department to assuage regional party egos in the political alliance dharma. LAst mile rail links, change in basic wagon material, switching to area block signalling, are only a couple of vital steps which Indian Railways need to start, if they want to avoid the soft death in next 10-15 years. For that instead of mediocre politicians, steely individuals like E Sreedharan, Vinod Rai etc, should be given a free hand to head Indian Railways politically and departmentally to root out nepotism, regionalism, high handedness etc and to revive the Golden Era of Indian Railways... Social equity of Railways also need to be in check & balanced

When Britishers handed over the powers to Indian Rulers, they built railway network to the tune of 50,000 kilometers, criss-cross the country. After 64 years of independence, we have added close to 12,000 kilometers only. Most the tracks built in British India are requiring replacement. So long as the Railways are handled by Regional politicians, who have greater concerns about their own States and Constituencies, this National body is in loggerheads. Many of the major decision-making bodies in Railways are headless, and even if they have powers to implement, they fear their political boss for vendetta, therefore, Railways, of late, have become puppet in the hands of sensational politicians. This situation should change. Like, Metro project, Railways should be handled by Technocrats and not politicians or bureaucrats, without interference from the politicians!

Compare to the technology advance, we can still do better. The expansion should be given to private players for achievement of the target.

We can not disregard the development/progress made in establishing Indian Railways on the Net-work. At one time or other , we need a better transport for Bulk (passengers & cargo). Particularly, where the Bus carrier service is scanty.

But, looking at the present demand, we need better service/ amenities for passengers using the existing Railways. Particularly, faster express trains connecting capitals, Good hygienic conditions in toilets, drinking water, catering services, facility for booking tickets, more security for traveler (from theft, kidnapping, vandalism, arson by terrorist/social evils etc.),Automatic alarm systems, checking systems, signaling equipments, furbished seats with modern facility (mobile,tv, radio etc).

In my opinion it should be minimum ten times means 1800 km in a year. I have seen one doubling project between Lucknow and Jaunpur(NR) in UP. They have completed 70 km length in 5 years. If you want to complete the project in within time frame please look the growth of Chinese railway.

I agree with you Pragya. The expansion in railway routes are not enough. The comfort, safety, security and economy of journey should be kept in mind. Thanks for referral Pragya!
