ITS A GOOD MOVE, WHO WOULD LIKE TO STAND IN A LONG QUEUE, WHEN THE TECHNOLOGY IS FACILITATING YOUR JOURNEY TO GET TICKET THROUGH YOUR MOBILE, EVERYONE CAN MAKE THE MOST OF THIS TECHNOLOGY, ESPECIALLY AGED PEOPLE WHO CANNOT STAND IN A QUEUE FOR LONG HOURS.
BUT THE USERS HAVE TO ENSURE THAT, THEIR CELLULAR PHONES SHOULD HAVE THAT ENVIRONMENT WHAT THIS APPLICATION IS NEEDED, SO THAT THERE WILL BE HASSSLE FREE BROWSING AND IT IS BETTER TO INSTALL LATEST FIREWALL AND ANTIVIRUS SO THAT ONE CAN HAVE ONLINE TRASACTIONS IN SECURE MODE. (BY DEFAULT APPLICATION LOCKS THE SEAT, NO NEED TO MENTION, ITS AN OLD OPTION, VERY SIMPLE LOGIC)

@ mahalakshmi , as you are giving your opinion on Problems . but this problem of "ticket solds out" are also faced during reservation from counters, when you are trying to reserve ticket from few available seats and availability finished as you reach to counter . Then this technology is going to solve your problems.

Another first from Indian Railways. Iam impressed with their attempt to embrace technology. Kudos to them and hope it works better than their online reservation system. Goes a long way in eliminating touts and tricksters.

Technology can be utilized with the better services of Web browsers...if we have better network coverage and compatible handsets..i think this is the best possible way to save time.

The Indian Railways has a launched M-Ticket as a mobile phone application allowing users with an internet enabled mobile to book railway ticket through their phones. Users will need to carry the SMS that would be sent as the proof of the booking within 20 minutes of booking. Users will still need to carry a valid id proof along with the SMS for their booking to be valid. Users will need to download the mobile ticketing application from Indian Railways’ portal IndianRailways.gov.in. Users can use their mobile phones and visit the website to register for the service. An SMS will then bring the link of the mobile ticket application on the phone. Once it is installed, one can get tickets on the phone. On completion of booking and payment formalities, an SMS containing ticket details will be sent to the user, which is referred to as the Mobile Reservation Message (MRM).

Thanks Mahalakshmi for referral. I think you are to the point since the number of seats will remain the same one really needs luck to get a reservation on the date required.

Online Ticket Enquiry and subsequent booking has never never been a problem if the time gap between the "enquiry" and the booking is "reasonable". Problem in will arise, if after confirming availability, you want to discuss the matter with members in your family, trunk call your contact point at your destination, confirm his availability to recieve you, put you up etc., and then click BUY. That is not the way online systems are meant to work. Actual problem will come on the verification of the SMS. The vendor at the ticket counter, the TTs on the train - if it is a long distance train, several TTs, the TT at the endpoint - ALL have to be linked. They cannot simply accept a (possibly faked) SMS as gospel truth. They too need the connectivity. A simpler way maybe to have the Ticket Clerk at the starting ststion issue you a paper ticket based on your SMS after verifying the same. The problems are in the implementation of the technology.

By the time you browse available seats and click get tickets the tickets are already sold out..... The application should have a facility to lock the seat for 30 seconds, it is missing. Well - railway is government service. As usual we should expect the usual characteristics associated with a indian government service like .....lack of accountability, lack of quality, doing things just for the sake of doing, government filled with people who are just class 9 pass etc etc
