Indian Railways should be cheapest and fastest means of communication for a COMMON MAN and it should be honoured.Railways Minister should see that it keeps up to its pace. Also it maintenance and survey should be done at least once in a month so that it is considered HIGHLY RELIABLE.

I am happy to note the mature views of esteemed contributors. The people are slowly but surely realising to pay for value added services. With this mind set,it will go a long way in implementing peple friendly policies.

Really endorse Darshana's view. It is of a matter of grave concern that we can spoil ourselves with unwanted expenditure whereas we cringe at at a small fare hike which has been long overdue. We unwittingly are becoming freeloaders. Shameful indeed.

The proposal to increase (fares) will impact the common man, so better to hike for the higher class only

I agree with Darshana that people are willing to shell out increased fares.I also agree that on paper Indian Railways is corporate body sans functions. The huge arrear of upgradation, renewals and new projects will suffer spill over for want of funds or budgetary provisions. It is about time Government must encourage private participation so that railways catch up with latest technological delepment. The HSR will remain a pipe dream and technological backward.

railways for a long time has become the personal property of the political parties. its a welcome move by the unions, who showed courage, in face of adversity.

After the rail budget common people were interviewed to get their reaction, I did not find one person who expressed unwillingness to pay more. But they wanted better facilities, safety, and comfortable travel. They know that these facilities come with a cost and which they are ready to pay. When man on the street can understand the need for funds in railways, why make an issue out of it to gain political gains. Do not give the social or non profit organization tag to railways. it is a corporate entity and it should be run and managed in the same manner.

I stand along with Darshana. If people can pay up 15 rupees as education cess on a fried chicken leg in KFC( Kentucky Fried Chicken, the full name of KFC, I suppose many didnot know its full name and were just throwing up chicken leg piece bones out of their mouths). I am sure, people can pay up the whatever percent increase per kilometer. [ Abhi hum padhe nahin na hai budget ko, hum isko padhenge, detail mein padhenge, aur apni baat rakhenge, koi bhi charcha aise hi bakar bakar thodi na hota hai, uske liye study ki jaroorat padti hai, deep study] I may bring to the notice of all our readers here that The Indian Railways is an example before the world where it has stood up to be the best unparalleled economic institution. Many families are having their bread and butter from the Indian Railways. Petty ticketing middlemen are earning money illegally and feeding their families. A few rupees from the Consumer, who is the king, how does it matter. After all the money is given to the Indian railways and ultimately the consolidated fund of India and therefore the money is with us, the people, with whom all power in a democracy exists. Please donot create a fuss over the increase. Accept Darshana's argument as completely logical and valid.

It is not the question of how much we pay, it the question of loyalty that should be created and provide value add services for the money's worth. The concept should be this and not to uphold the election manifesto, people who think rationally should be replaced. If the comfortlevel is improved, people will certainly pay for it. For instance, we pay sky rocketing prices to travel by Air, because of the time and productivity we can acheive. In similar lines we can pay more if railways provide efficient travel facilities.

It is first time in the history of trade unions that they have supported railway budget presented by ex, railway minister sh Trivedi. The five of big unions have represented to Prime Minister that there should be no roll back of hikes in railway fares. It therefore reflects on the financial health of Indian Railways. It is a good omen that people understands the need of orgnisation which serves them. They may come foreward to shell a little bit of increased fare.I therefore appreciate the initiative taken by Indian Raiways UNIONS and my big salute to them.

There is no denying the fact that heavy dose of subsidy points a very serious gape between haves and haves not.And here where the politics is revolved. The subsidy is about 5.1 % of GDP 7% or less. I agree that people prticularly workers of unorganised sectors will face difficulty in paying the increased fares, but a large number of people travelling on sleepers or general compartments have capacity. The only problem with government is its budgetting. The area of development should spread length and breadth encopmpassing rurals and suburban centers. The safety apart, railwys have to attend huge arrears of track renewals and upgradation, leaving aside introduction of latest technology.

Heavy dose of subsidy is really showing weak social fabric, Mr.Baksh. FM claims that the subsidies should be kept below 2% GDP (in fact should be brought down to 1.75% GDP). Someone said, the railways has a long history and has become part of the Indian cultural heritage, and should be operated by someone with a firm grasp of intrinsic values who would not sell out for pieces of equities for their own commercial gains. Passenger Earnings is only 27% whereas the Goods Traffic Earnings is 65%. In the expenditure side, 53% is spent on staff wages, allowances and pension fund, 17%on fuel, 6% on Depreciation Reserve Fund and only 2% on development fund. It is ironical that 9% is spent which is claimed as 'Miscellaneous Expenses'. As far as the passenger traffic market is concerned, we have two important points to make: (i) it generates large financial deficits and damage to the railways; (2) it creates heavy social costs. In both cases, one has to look at the "composition of the train" - the number of coaches, and categories of coaches, the availability of seating accommodation provided, and calculate man-accommodation per km, per train. Then perhaps it is the ordinary or lower class that provides the highest revenue to the railways. If it covers overcrowding, the people travelling with standing accommodation only and persons travelling in the corridors are accounted for, since they pay their normal fare, but do not get even standing accommodation, then it is clear that the railways earning four times more than the official accommodation made available.

Thanks for raising this issue. I agree with Darshan that we can pay but this will be selfish if we keep ourselves at the centre and look around. Every one is not like us who are earning handsome salary to meet these expenses. I dont know how many of u have travelled by public conveyance? if not do experience by going once. You will know what is the reality of emerging economic power. if at all Indian railway is not meeting their expenses with present income, they have to attack the unnecessary expenditure made on: 1. Free passes to MP (rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha including Ex-MP) for 2 to travel in 1st class AC throughout their life. (Calculate the amount we can save) 2. The officers and employees are getting 6 free passes for entire family and 4 passes for workmen family every year instead of LTC. (Calculate the saving that indian railway can) 3. please note that only 15% are travelling in Executive class and rest 85% people travelling are from either middle or lower income group who struggles day out to earn money for their living. In my opinion squeezing poors money for spending money on such lavishness is foolishness and supporting this idea of increasing fare is not correct. In the name of safety is just an excuse to make people fool. Jai Hind
