Dear friends, it seems that the retail industry in India may lose foreign direct investment (FDI) of up to Rs4bn this fiscal year because of recommendation by the Parliamentary. Panel on Commerce, which has opposed further leeway to the entry of international retail brands in the country. After the IKEA debacle, India Inc. can loose as much as another Rs 4bn in 2009-10 due to the stand in the parliamentary report as stated by KPMG Advisory Service Manager Anand Ramanathan.

I would like to know your views about this matter. Is it good for the economy. ?

Our society is not matured enough to understand what organised retail can do for the betterment of the country. They see it as a evil force that will gulp all small retailers. What we can do is take a page out of Bharti Walmart. They have been slow  about expansion.First they will wait for a suitable environmental where all the stakeholders of the society can be convinced and then come up wioth a shop. They opened the wholesale store at Punjab with not a single protest!!!!!  So we must go slow with the FDI but not forget about it.However Single  brand FDI should be given 100% approval. It is like Reebok or Gucci selling a shoe or handbag like does a Hyundai or Samsung selling durbles.

In India where the beuraucrats and politicians who come in one size fit all category one cannot for sure say whether prohibiting investments is good or bad for the nations. Prohibiting investments is bad for the economy. Then these decision makers has there own Cock and Bull reason which a person cannot understand. India though advocates free market dirctions is still in the clutches of Socialist elements who cannot understand what is generaly good and bad for the people here. So one cannot be sure.

Bad indeed!!

We do not need any factor that would divert the attention of people looking at India Inc favorably to be diverted to any other country becuase they have a much better FDI policy. This is certainly not needed at this point of time.

Thanks for the referral Shailena! :)

Many global consultancy firm KPMG and several major Indian retail players will be affected if the parliament panel's suggestions are implemented, while some foreign players may cut down their investment plans.
