The huge worldwide success garnered by Kindle, e-book reading device has taken Amazon into the fast lane. Indian E-commerce retail portal Infibeam want to repeat the same success into the Indian market by launching a reading device named ‘Pi’ supporting regional languages which has reached past conceptual stage and the portal has even started talks with many publishers to sell proprietary digital content on its device.

The main attraction for this device would be the support for various Indian languages along with its better pricing and higher availability on Indian shores and will also look at supporting Indian newspaper subscriptions so as to increase revenues & adaptability in Indian market.

So, users what do you think. Will E-books gain wide acceptance in India?

Why not? This device will change the future of education. Now students won't need to carry big bags of books to schools neither anybody will be deprived of any knowledge no matter wherever he is and is carrying a laptop or not. So, if someone is getting such a device, why will he deny it? Indeed, this E-book will get a huge popularity in the market.

We are not seeing its negative side. High demand of this gadget will increase consumption of energy and electricity. The batteries used here will be harmful for nature like those of in mobile phones. Too much exposure to these gadgets may effect our eyes as normal computer does. So, its not wise to depend on these kind of technology which are harmful for health and environment.

Hi suresh thanks for stating the features of the e-book. I agree with you. Nowadays there is a huge demand among the people for the gadgets and this e-book will also be accepted by them.

Thanks...

In India it should be asked that what will not work here. This will be better for us to answer. There are different-2 types of people here.Among few people i think this will be a great success.

This is in response to the argument that it will affect our eyes like a normal computer screen,in fact the new screen is such that it almost feels like a normal book page and interestingly it can be read under the glare of sunlight too, that is the new OLED technology, with back lighting it can be read even in dark where there is no electricity for long periods. The next gen e-readers will be solar powered, increasing battery life, saving on power etc.So in all respects the e-reader is here to stay!!!

Another noteworthy thing about e-readers is that can also be used as a notebooks for your notes too, eliminating usage of slate, notebooks etc

I think it will work in India, because by using this no need to carry lot of books. But i am agree with Sarika madam that it will affect on eyes, so i think the best solution is that children should not allowed to use it but the young persons can use it because they have to study many things or topics so it will beneficial to carry it except lot of books. And Makrand sir you are also right that we can't ignore any side so we also can't ignore its positive side. Overall i think that it is good to use it...........

Definitely it will work out in India, for students, for IT people, for normal readers and especially good for them who use to study while relaxing. No need to carry a weighted books or sit in from of the PC and also its simply to carry where ever we go.

I think the main drawback is pricing, so it will take time to come up in the market but definitely it will work out coz it have a lot of advantages.

Yeah Sonam...should probably see Infibeam repeating a similar kind of success as compared to its predecessor Amazon....reasons ranging right from cost cutting measures, environmental friendly issues, time agenda, easy access to unlimited data, reknowned literature and so on...The only hitch at the moment would be limited to the cost factors as the same would appeal more and of course sought after by the rich masses.

It's the future of books,as we know it,the era of paper is going, due to environmental reasons.Technically speaking,it is possible to carry 1 of these e-devices to use from KG to PhD.The amount of paper which can be saved, the cost of books comes down, dramatically and interestingly,NO book is ever OUT OF PRINT/STOCK,those quaint expressions will be history. It breaks down geographical barriers,a person in Timbuktu/Jhumritalalya with an internet/wireless connection can download it anywhere/anytime.Authors with no access or denied access to mainstream publishing can publish their works on internet, and market it directly to readers as e-books etc.As someone who has 15 yrs experience in the publishing industry, predicted the advent of this device way back in 1998,it is THE FUTURE!

Yes, I support in favour of this product. From Environmental point of view, This will save the trees from being cut for the production of paper and ultimately this will help in saving environment from disaster such as rise in temperature. From social point of view, this will revolutionize the age old concept of education learning. But there is trade off one must look for which is how many families can really afford this device. In India, majority of the people are from middle level income group. We may not like to see this device being in hands of only rich people, as this will create social imbalance. Your comments plz. thanks

Would it be feasible for the publisher to have all the books required on it? Besides the children will remain glued to the screen & this may affect their eyesight. It has some plus & some negative points.

Although the positive impact of e learning is always existing, the hazards should also be looked into. Every utility has two sides and one cannot ignore them. I agree with Sarika. :)
