Has any innovation really occurred in recruitment? Has recruiting methods and approaches really changed from the basic advertising/posting an open position, request referrals and random resume searching?  Have corporate recruiters been resisting change or is there just minimal opportunities for innovation in recruiting?

It seems that there has been very limited innovation in recruiting with the exception of technology systems for the organization of information.  Recruiting remains reactive, time consuming and costly. In my experience as both a corporate HR professional and executive recruiter the basic recruitment process is initiated by position attrition, business expansion and business acquisition.  There is some prior planning for expansion and acquisition but almost none for workforce attrition.

Social media could be considered by some to be innovative but really is only  anew form of posting positions and acquiring resumes.  Social media appears to be a modification of the current job posting methodology.

Strategic recruiting within organizations seems to be almost non existent, HR management seems to resist changes that impact them, most seems to be content with the status quo and there is little emphasis on developing talent communities or pools.

Opportunities exist for innovation if willing to explore them! What do you say?

There are new recruiting innovations. With the new era of technology growth, the recruitment innovation has to be based on the proper recruitment process measurement, mainly on the recruitment channels and their efficiency. The recruiters are told to use the web recruitment as the best recruitment source and recruitment channel and they do not focus on further analysis of the recruitment channels. The recruitment process innovations are important as they can save a lot of money. The job candidates use the Internet differently and the companies have to follow them in the use of the recruitment process.

I fully agree with this argument. Recruitment processes have remained unaltered for decades, which has resulted in the recruitment function in majority of the organizations functioning purely as a "cost centre". Even though rest of the HR Functions have undergone a severe makeover in the past two decades, recruitment for some reason has remained untouched. As you mentioned, the only change that has happened is related to technology. But, the way the recruitment process is handled, from a strategic point of view, has remained the same.

The reason for this slow movement forward is that the recruitment function to some extent is ignored. It is only given attention if something is going wrong. Majority of the investment goes into innovation related to the core business (which makes sense) - a software company is likely to innovate in software, a car manufacturer is likely to innovate in manufacturing processes.

If organizations are not so rigid in bringing about a strategic change in the way the recruitment process is manged, there are a number of opportunities out there to significantly reduce costs, improve efficiency and effectiveness and innovate. This will then have a positive effect on their core business, resulting in a "new and evolved" recruitment function, which will no longer be looked upon as only a "cost centre".
