New form of marketing involves doing conversational marketing using social media but ROI of this channel is yet to be proved. Search engine marketing on the other hand has proven its worth. Where should we invest our marketing dollars?

Before investing your marketing dollars on something, you need to be certain about what you expect as an outcome of this activity. Each method will have their own pros and cons.

Social Marketing (Interactive Marketing) is good when you want to build a brand online. But SEM is mostly used for demand generation. The results will be quicker in SEM. The visitors will be landed on a page where you can do your sales pitch and covert them to customers. On the other hand, effective interactive marketing can be used to create an awareness of your brand values in your target market and get brand followers.

SEM has proven ROI calculation methods already. But ROI in an interactive marketing campaign is quite hard to measure. There are some methods available in that as well. But I am not sure how effective are they. But it will take a little longer time for you to get your ROI in interactive marketing.

On a long run, Interactive marketing is definitely effective than Search Engine Marketing. But like any other activity, you need to be careful and proactive in that. Rather than just doing some marketing activities, it would be more like making the whole organisation "Social Media Ready"

Interactive marketing is the future but in current times SEM is still very relevant and has to be taken care of.I'd still put my money into SEM.

Interactive marketing is the way to go. With more and more people reaching out via the internet, it's important to connect with them, and engage them. With SEM, this is achieved only one way - the connect happens and from thereon engagement of the user ends. Interactive media keeps a user tuned constantly and therefore the impact more effective. Although this is not yet measureable, the long term effects are bound to reap rewards.

Interactive marketing is isn't a future now, it has arrived with a good pace, Interactive mailers are the best examples on which  big companies are putting there money rather going for SEMs. Customer loyality is the trend instead of attracting new clients and a huge amount of money is being spent targeting existing client's

Sasi, people are making there buying decision eleswhere and certainly not on the corporate/sellers websites. Search engine marketing is reducing to just gather the crowd for the show which you are putting up somwhere on the web. But the interactive marketing is the show itself, engages the customer, create a space in the psyche of the customer thereby increasing the brand recalibility (if it doesnot turn into sales immedietly) and nothing can deliver the message better then humor which nowdays is the flavour of internet marketing. So i vote for Interactive marketing.

I agree with Rajesh here, technology has fundamentally changed how brands and their audiences communicate, not just online but across all channels. Consequently interactive thinking needs to be at the heart of all marketing strategy and interactive channels at the heart of all marketing delivery. Amazon.com is an excellent example of the use of interactive marketing, as customers record their preferences and are shown book selections that match not only their preferences but recent purchases........

Interactive marketing is only in its basics while SEM is a process in full swing. As the web gets more entangles with thousands of billions of pages every day and new data gets introduced every moment, SEM will be the most preferred method for marketing for future organizations.

SEM can be expected to be the new dimension of business enhancement as it has full potential to make or break a organization's credibility on the web, at least.

As per current user and marketing activities behaviour, it has been noticed that search engine marketing better serve the need of a marketer. I am not saying that intractive marketing is not doing any good in terms of business generation, however, its quite lengthy process and has not any proven record that can show its credentials.

Interactive marketing requires very different skills and profits can only be achieved in long term and that too can only be assured if the endeavor is carried on in full force for long. My vote goes to SEM
