The world’s most-used internet browser, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, is on a steady decline in India, reveals a study by Irish metrics firm StatCounter. IE, as it’s known, has lost almost 20% market share in India in the past two years, even as Google’s Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox make great strides.

http://www.technama.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/firefox_and_internet_explorer.jpg

According to StatCounter, the percentage of PCs running Internet Explorer in India dropped from close to 70% in 2008 to about 51%, currently . Internet Explorer’s market share has suddenly started dipping, and rivals Chrome’s and Firefox’s rising. Worldwide IE has a market share of about 55% followed by Firefox’s 31%, Chrome at 7% and Safari at about 4% currently.

So, will Internet Explorer lose its identity in future??

Yes, I think in near future IE will lose its identity. Many companies have come up with their own web browsers that are better than Microsoft's IE. Moreover, PC manufacturers are providing a option of selecting any specific browser by the users.

The percentage of systems running the browser dropped in several countries , since March 1. India does not have any such mandate but still the erosion in market share has been steady. Besides security, the decline is also due to slow connectivity in a country already plagued by slow internet speed. Of the 71 million internet users in India, just 8 million have a broadband connection.

Well, to be frank IE is losing ground, but there's one thing that i've noticed is that most web applications that are built/developed are mostly developed to be more of compatible with IE than most other browsers. Until web apps are developed to be more suited for Firefox/Chrome, IE will remain. Yes, maybe most home users might be using/shifting towards Firefox/Chrome(am typing this comment through a Firefox!), but web applications that mean business (not socialization sites etc.) still run best in IE.

I think the trend of developing web application suitable for IE is an old thing. Now everybody is concern with Browser compatibilities and all are taking it very serious that the site or the application or the community site must work well in all browsers. The application where build suitable for IE some years before just because of it polarity . Now browsers like Firefox ,Chrome and all are coming with lot of user friendliness and functionality. I think IE also will bounce back soon with more exciting features.

google chrome is a light and fast browser and other features like direct streaming , viewing download history in a single click makes it more comfortable for the user . the firefox browser is also having the more advanced features . on the other hand IE is a heavy browser which takes more time to open in slow connections . so people are avoiding the use of IE for their browsing purpose .

Internet Explorer is losing share because people are finding out that it uses proprietary Microsoft technologies and promotes vendor lock-in, and Firefox is beating it over and over because Firefox uses open standards. This is demonstrating why open source software is superior to closed source/proprietary software. The same goes for Linux and Windows, where Linux is the open standards alternative and Windows promotes vendor lock-in.

totally agree

If you take the example of chrome, the latest release sept 09 has passed full ACID3 test and started supporting HTML 5 syntax such as <video> and <audio> while other browsers are still struggling to achieve that. IE results are far lower than chrome and FF. I agree that IE has tried to improve and follow W3C standards after IE 6 but it's too late now.

Just forget to mention, inspect element feature of Chome is a definite boon to web developers.

Already IE is loosing a lot to firefox and now IE tries to emulate what it is considered as Firefox forte. The addons and multi tab browsing. Both are proving IE as a pathetic browser. In IE8 if you open multiple IE tabs then it is like opening several different IE browser instances. but firefox handles it as charm as possible.

Microsoft tries to attack this by incorporating its explorer and folder views by using IE. Latest win 7 has only IE browser to browse the folders. , control panel items.

Yes, IE may lose its shine, if it does not improve, especially on speed.

I have shifted to Mozilla Firefox since last 3 years and I am happy with it

For Google Chrome, I have doubt on its Privacy concerns

Yeah Prathibha... The ratings shows other browsers are better. Even by our personal usage, we know it better. See the link http://internet-browser-review.toptenreviews.com/ ... I dont think, IE is going to be wiped out etc... but it may continue in third or fourth place only.

As a Web Designer I really hate IE6 becoz it shows many bugs while coding... we cannot use Web2.0 standards in IE6,and also even it is not safe and secure browser becoz hackers can easily hack if we use IE6. There are many other browsers which very best in giving many features that help people in many ways.

May be for sure IE will vanish in few years.

I suggest people to use Mozilla Firefox browser that is cool and perfect, also safe and secure.

The existence of IE depends on how Microsoft recacts to the competition. Though Microsoft is losing market it not necessary that Internet Explorer will become history. Today also it is the most prefered web browser & is comfortable in usage. I agree that Microsoft has to make some changes & make it more user friendly.
