I personally feel that Telephonic interviews are better before we call a candidate for a direct discussion, Because we can analyse a candidate based on the way he is communicating, his confidence level, his attitude, his interest towards the job and his willingness to proceed for the job... most of the senior candidates prefers telephonic discussion instead of personal discussion for the initial level screening..

It is a better option in the initial phase of screening and shortlisting. To cut down on cost and time, telephonic interview is a good idea. Now a days Video conferencing is becoming a popular option more so while interviewing outstation candidates.Final decision should be taken after personal interaction.

I think it is a good idea, specially in cost cutting and candidates are selected on the way they speak. So, in my opinion this is a good technique.

yeah, Ms Rohini is right, telephonic interviews r convenient but its very essential to study non-verbal expression of any candidate, becoz its all abt communicating it the right way in today's scenario, in any domain. facial expression, body language, eye contact..all's needed today...so i am a game for age old personal interviews...

Although a lot is revealed over non-verbal attributes of the candidate's voice during a telephonic interview, I think, while assessing a potential personnel, it is important to get a wholistic picture of the candidate's personality, not just his verbal/non-verbal skills over the phone, unless of course, one is interested in hiring telephone operators!!

face to face interview is much better than telephonic interview in many cases. For example, I know many employees, who, when asked basics of their skills on telephonic interview, just read the answer. This type of wrong practices can be harmful.Telephonic interview also hides the nervousness and lack of confidence in an employee...

Mr.Vikram i definitely agree with you. One can't judge the person on telephone as there is a strong likelihood that he may able to pretend himself which he is not. Also as vikram said you will not be able to see the expressions or emotions which a candidates reflect in a face-to-face interview which are important to judge the confidence level and the character of a person.
So definitely traditional way of taking interviews still remain the most efficient and reliable way.
What do you say?

A telephonic interview does not give a better insight to a candidates personality. In today's competitive world, soft skills also play a vital role in selection of a candidate for the organisation.
There have been a few cases i know about where the person attending the telephonic interview is totally different than the person who turned up for a face to face final round of interview. This is too big a risk to take if selections are made based on telephonic interviews.

Candidates are very sharp now-a-days. So you can judge the candidate only by trapping him in a realistic question and his expressions and presence of mind will show you his insights. You can also change your flow of questionning according to his reactions.

I do
not think it is only by the way they talk many other things are counted
like their gestures, facila expression. Telephonic can work only for
telecalling or BPO kind of a job.
