for example , Tarangambaadi a traditional name was changed to Trancobar by westners just because they could not pronounce. we have to change India as Bharat which will help us constantly remember our rich cultural heritage.

In todays context- it is yes. Sadly the politicians (and of course we too get carried away with them) have got no good business and to keep themselves in limelight they use all sorts of nonsense gimmicks this being one of them. Barring them...gladly if we can..

In MAHBARATHAM, during the firce fighting in the bttle field, it was said," ASWATHAMA DIED. Only meant that the white horse ASWATHMA but then what happened. In similar vein, these tactics works. These you can say Chanakkiya's mantra.

Not some extent but we should know the motive behind it, like as behan ji has changed in UP that entirely motivated by politics or BJP has done the same in UP or in Mumbai name but when it comes to the changing name like as when the mughals has changed the entire indian culture and ruin this like allahabad from prayag if govt want to restore old then its welcome step like if britishers have chnaged some namne if it restores then it gives some how historical essence so the motive matters not work

These are the tools politicians use to divert peoples attention from their inefficiency. You will neither become or follow gandhian principles by naming cities, localities or roads after him. Desh Drohis use this to fool our citizens

Hallo Ayan, By changing city and state names will not help any one. If they want to change something, it is better to change our attitude, improve our living standard, proper education to all (without giving donation) proper infrastructure and to encourage our farmers by giving loans and electricity. By doing this everyone will be happy. K Rajagopalan.

Its just a narrow mindedness of a politician, there are many villages sylable to progressive nature, but really in very pity state. Its necessary to understand that name does not give you fame, its the work you have done in your lifetime will give your more fame to your name.

I dont think its a political gimmick. Just think how would you feel if your name is spelled or pronounced in an improper way and you might like some names or dislike some. In the same way some people want their city or state to be called with a particular name or change it to some thing else.

Dear Ayan, Yes politicians may have hijacked the issue. Yet, find nothing wrong if this can indeed serve in an effort to correct historical aberrations.

I think changing names shows the nativity, nativity of language, the way of their pronunciation and their nativism.. It doesn't mean that their a political gimmick in that.. But one thing I am sure that now a days politicians takes every simple issue to their heads and making them a BIG issues either its important or not.. Politicians trying to grab this kind of opportunities to get some popularity among the people.
