I work in the country (Saudi Arabia) which is implementing several construction projects to build six economic cities. That's a huge investment into infrastructure. Lots of civil engineers are naturally required. I work in a technical university. In terms of student preferences civil engineering is at the bottom. I wonder why when there's such a big demand for civil engg skills should students not choose this career? There must be something to do with the nature of civil engg jobs. Or possibly some other explanation which I am not aware of.

Yes, i do agree with Vignes and all others. Civil can not be the last option. There is no such project in my knowledge which is without CIVIL. Starting from Jungle cutting to the Ultimate finishing of any Building, Roads, Airport, Railway etc. etc. Actually, Civil is so vast that, nobody those who are not associated with this branch can not imagine about its exposure. Most of the people thinks that, Civil means Building & Roads construction and nothing else. That is why, those people may take it as their last option.

In my view there is nothing like LAST CHOICE only. At the age of 17-18 years i.e, after 10+2 a student is under the pressure of his parents option. A student at that age doesnt even know clearly where the different streams of engg will take them. They think that taking computer science means AC room , handsome salory, foreign visits. And when it comes to CIVIL ENGG they think that the role of a civil is to stand in the site in hot sun and deal with those materials and labourers......... Firstly they need a proper counselling

what I wrote before in some of the arguments that unless we make roads, buildings, and bridges over the rivers coming on the roadway,we can not go ahead with any of the engg.mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer sc. etc.,hence now everyone has become well acquinted of the fact that future of civil is very bright and boys has started to opt civil, still it take some more time when the civil branch will become unavailable on first day of counceling of all the engg. college.

Good Civil Engineers are very scarce these days. And considering the success rates of Construction projects being very low in terms of completing the projects within planned budget and schedule, it is high time that we need good civil engineers to manage construction. Our country is short of committed and skilled civil engineer who are the need of the hour. Definitely an invidual committied in taking up civil engineering and also committed to his profession, shall be 1 among hundreds in INDIA, unlike 1 among lakhs of people in other professions. Normally in any domain, there is supply-demand curve existing. For example in share market if demand for somes shares is high in a particular day then its price increases. Similarly demand for civil engineer is very high these days, and shortfall of good civil engineers have lead to a huge demand and supply which every individual interested in society and its development should make use of this golden oppurtunity. Still not convinced then only TIME will TELL U :-)!

No, i would say that civil engineering is not the last option to choose for our graduates. There are various other fields like software engineering etc.where they have excel and will continue to excel given the huge potential for growth in those domains. But yes infrastructure is an important aspect of our country and given the scope in this field one can adopt for civil engineering.

civil engineering will never be the last choice coz there is so much potential in india for development . Rural can go for roads and low cost housing and urban would go for monorails, metros or skywalks. construction and infrastructure is the backbone of indian economy.

Civil Engineering is mainly associated with expansion of civilization. There is no limit to how civilized one can be and so there is no limit for civil engineering. So question of choice does not arise. It has to be the integral part of civilised society.

To me all depends on the current wave. In 90s, first pereference was Civil Engineering. Then there was a boom in Computer Engineering and pereference was the same respectively.
Now as the infrastructure developement is on high, people are going accordingly. My opinion is Civil, Electrical and Mechenical departments are the base and these should be the priority fields.

I think that Civil Engineering was the last choice some years back but the same is no longer the case. I feel that it is the only branch which has been stable and not volatile unlike IT and other related fields. Considering the fact that India's infrastructural Development is still a long way from being world class, i think the coming years should focus more on Infrastructure particularly in these recessionary times. Next 10 years like the last 5 years would see Civil Engineers in demand.

There are lot of openings in this field compared to other fields like software which is in downtrodden stage. Even right from the individual to the top corporate companies this field cannot be kept in dark. Only after consultance with this field one can come forward with new ventures.

No, civil engineering is not at all a last choice for younger generations provided they have interest in the subject. When it comes to recruitment, both IT companies and construction companies will recruit according to their merit or performance in interview, so civil engineers have choice to choose between these fields as soon as they complete their education. The actual fact is not the matter of subject whether it is civil or computers, why most of the people go for IT or BT fields is for the sake of salary, facilities etc.If any one look into subject Civil engineering is as interesting as any other subjects.Of course this is the basic subject, which requires high skills and knowledge to work and cannot be look down upon.
