Let’s take a scenario of a Small business company having 5 users, opt for a physical on premises server solution, comprising of mailing office collaboration file server printing fax solution, NAS SAN or DAS for backup storage the hardware and software will cost Rs 3,00,000 INR USD 6000, this is a very conservative estimate A SMB class firewall with antispam will be needed to protect the mail server, the physical device will cost Rs 20,000 INR upward plus a annual subscription for updating the antispam database, A gateway AV solution Rs 2,000 INR, plus annual license subscription the mail server will need a dedicated IP (a logical no. that forms a network) cost depends on ISP. For an on call, break fix or regular maintenance support for the server will cost Rs 5000 to 8000 INR a month. Break down, down time technology obsolesce owners headache.

Cloud is available for Rs 2,500 INR or USD 50 per seat per month. No maintenance up time 99.9% else money back guaranteed. Protected from technology obsolesce, enterprise class Firewall antispam, gateway protection.

If any business person wants IT leverage, will definitely come to Cloud for a deal.

Hhooowwsssss that....

Cloud Computing How Secure?

Cloud offers platform as a service (NOS ), Infrastructure as a service (implemented on blade clusters virtualization like hyper V), Software as a service, be it word-processing to CRM to database, intergrated internal communication like IM video chat, mailing solution, collaboration software like Sharepoint, storage including backup sync to on premises NAS SAN or DAS infrastructure for business critical data. The cloud infrastructure has Enterprise class perimeter protection (Firewall anti spam) Gateway AV protection monitored 24X7 365 days.

  1. Point to point VPN (IPSEC encryption for data security) connectivity from cloud to business unit device.
  2. Edge protection, (on premises devices used in the organisation to access cloud) maintenance, surveillance, available at Rs 550 INR per device (Laptop desk top Mini Handheld etc).

How much of control do we have on our telephone / mobile operators switching system? Do we need? We want to make a call send an SMS or MMS, similar with cloud.

Cloud computing is a service.

Virtualization is a process, which converts physical hardware to logical (virtual), like partitioning of hard disk to logical C: D: etc, a crude example. This has huge benefit.

The physical server storage should have to be virtulazation ready by installing Hyper – v like software, virtualization is achieved.

Depends on the Cost. For small SMBs ok. But look what happened to Amazon. The EC2 was down. Toostep services itself was crippled for about a week. Rest of the Western World it was 3-4 days. For the "blacks-browns-yellows" it was around 10 days. That shows the level of discrimination also

With the cost of technology falling and better configurations and disk spaces available at a fraction of a cost, it is necessary to have a holistic view before opting for cloud computing. Various risk as no idea where the data is stored? Can you move from one provider to other easily in case of SLAs being violated. A solid agreement is vital.

As you go vast there is less security. Data is not on you but is travelling along various hardware and software makes easy to hijack. Also there is considerable speed phenomena. The processing speed will depend upon various factors. The network will be big hard to maintain. and you know if the certralize server is damage. ooooohhhhhh We can just rub our hands then.

no matter how much the world advances technically, the use of internet has no longer remained safe. The hackers remain much highly qualified than the programmers. It does not remain the question of ethics. People easily lose the hold of ethics and jump into the competition. This harms the inte

Cloud computing is a service virtualization is a process which converts physical hardware to logical (virtual), like partitioning of hard disk to logical C: D: etc, a crude example. The physical server storage should have the capability and by installing Hyper – v like Software, virtualization is achieved.

Physical servers are used for virtualization, isn’t feasible for SMB to maintain such setup on premises due to cost of servers / SW maintenance security down time up-gradation/obsolesce.

"Amazon cloud triped, toostep down". This is unlikely with Microsoft Cloud Services, Why?

cloud computing converts capital expenditure into operational expenditure. It is a hedging technique against technology risk as technology changes very frequently.cloud computing makes technology affordable for even small players and make IT a commodity rather than asset.Using cloud computing increases variable cost which increases the agility of business organization to respond to changing business environment.

From the following perspective cloud can work as efficient as or far better than a physical server

Security measures
1) Network security
2) Computer security and
3) Information security as a whole

Use of VPN ensures security.

Cost Effectiveness

Of course USD 50 or 2500 INR per seat per month is less than a physical server cost.

The idea of SAAS (Software as a service) reduces chances of failure or sudden breakdown

The OS platform, applications and infrastructure appears to group of customers as a service. It is not their responsibility to detect or fix problems like physical servers.

Maintenance perspective

SAAS facilitates less installation and maintenance.

Guys hold on ...looks like we have miss interpret the cloud computing concept. It has nothing to do with better than physical servers. Entire cloud can be run on physical servers. Argument would have been better if we have placed 'physical servers' against 'virtual server\virtualization'

Cloud IaaS is the capability provided to the consumer to provision processing, storage, networks and other fundamental computing resources where the consumer is able to deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating systems and applications. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure but has control over operating systems, storage and deployed applications, and possibly limited control of selected networking components (e.g., host firewalls). Cloud Computing Rocks..

Rouges were always there, we should not have internet, they are bad guys they are smarter.

Cloud offers enterprise class computing communicating capability to leverage, productivity, service level , availability. As a user of cloud computing he she has to be competent capable in comprehending the power and weakness, and guard the system, else venerability may get created and hackers are lurking to grab the opportunity, is this not true in every sphere of human life??

Cloud computing, sheds of on premises server’s backup systems and their maintenance up gradation, safety downtime etc.  Small business can afford enterprise class computing capability; there isn’t much of planning deployment time gap.

Excepting some security threats, cloud computing is the best when compared to physical servers. Even the physical servers does not guarantee the security. A technical snag in the physical server is a big threat for your data. But I dont know much technical details. Mr. Joy beautifully narrated.

Storing data on cloud is hastle free, and one can operate from anywhere and access data stored on different computers. It is maintenance free, prevents loss of data due to system breakdown. Keeps individual systems free from storing complicated software. One must ensure very sensitive data is not stored therein.

I agree with Joydeep, the service provider hosts both the application and the data, the end user is free to use the service from anywhere.

In small and single location companies, physical servers might be more suitable because the level of investment and maintenance effort is much less. But the world now has gone global. Most of the companies are multi-location. And their customers? Spread all over the world. It makes sense to move the processing to the cloud. Distance does not matter in this scenario. For that matter, it is suitable for any business. Distance is not a factor nowadays. The connectivity is so superb now that it appears that we are working on the local servers. Whether it is servers within our premises or in the cloud, the same level of precautions need to be taken. So it should not be a factor. But considering the cost, it is not less as is being made out. It is very much expensive. The provider also should make some money out of it. So the cost of the infrastructure plus his margins will add to the cost. And there will be some minimum storage usage clauses, etc., which will make them as expensive as having own servers.
