The cloud computing is going to the be the most economical way of working for those small and medium scale companies who cannot afford to buy expensive hardware and software. Maintenance costs are almost zero since nothing is managed or maintained in house.

Smaller companies were the hardest hit because most of them didn't have the budgets for expensive hardware and even more expensive software licences. Many of them were forced to choose between postponing automation, building their own in-house applications or investing a huge amount money, which could have otherwise been invested elsewhere. I feel SMEs can save lot of money and time by using cloud computing.

Interesting debate Phani Dasam....

I agree that most mid sized business will use cloud computing in 2010. Mid-sized businesses knew significantly more about cloud services or were at least using them or planning to use them in the near future. But small businesses when I surveyed, on the other hand, are ill-informed, and no plans to use the cloud at all.

And the hype surrounding the cloud (whether related to hosting, applications, computing, etc.) is confusing to small-business owners. The problem is, small-business owners I know are not technically savvy and don't wake up
in the morning wondering how they can cut costs by "leveraging the cloud." They keep things very simple and focus on the everyday tactical decisions to operate their business.

In my opininon, the small-business community needs more education on the specific solutions and benefits that the cloud provides. They need to see use cases and solutions that directly address their business needs if they are ever going to adopt it.

However, time will tell as to whether cloud computing takes off in the way that has been predicted. It would be great to see what other members of this platform have to say on this......

Good one....

I agree,

"Cloud offers a solution to  that allows IT to invest in their own hardware and “plug in” to the cloud for additional on-demand requirements".

we expect that other open source projects and suppliers will continue to develop cloud technologies to break down the industry’s current barriers. We are inviting participants across the industry to join us in presenting new ideas and emerging open source cloud technologies at the Open Source Cloud Computing.

With features such as to be able to access data from anywhere, scalability and pay per use, cloud computing will prove to be cost efficient for SMEs. But It will take some time to gain momentum as there is not much awareness about it in general. And also at present there are some concerns regarding the confidentiality and security of the data as they have to be dependent upon third party for it.

Good thought Tanmay but today as we're moving towards cloud based technology and with many upcoming ERP service providers its not much expensive anymore if you talk about Cost factor, moreover it is made more flexible as well. I know a name which is- Ramco OnDemand ERP, flexibility and scalability are their inbuilt huge benefits. They believe in pay for what you use. Talking about the initial investment. Unlike conventional onsite ERPs, which require up-front investment in IT infrastructure and manpower, Ramco OnDemand requires no initial IT investments. All you need to start using it is an internet connection! Also they offer 7 days free trial. I believe it is going to be a great success.

Thanks

If we go by the hype about Cloud Computing it is going to do wonders not only for SMEs but overall wherever there is internet.

It is definitely going to happen. However, sooner the awareness of this to smaller companies happens, sooner this phenomenon will occur. The ready availability of the solutions have to be propagated by the cloud- computing companies.

Yes, i do agree with you Phani that cloud computing offers avenues for SMEs who want to leverage automating their Business processes. Companies like ORACLE are giving option to go for SaaS based/On demand as well as costly On Premise software in the same organisation which is really cool..

It is very interesting to learn about cloud, it is still in its initial stages. It takes time to penetrate into the market that too for SMEs to get into it.

Very nice Sumitra ji, excellent thought and way of explanation. But might be there is a chance it may come up with more advantages which are compatible to small as well as mid level business.

Would probably vouch for you on this idea Sumitra...Fcators confined to ignorance or being ill informed, infant stage, cost factors subject to implementation and usage in the long run, tech savy issues, results and so on…

The very term "cloud" shrouds many mistries!  There is already significant complications on cloud computing reported in the media recently.  The Income Tax department has raised a serious issue on how the larger companies in the country are evading taxes, following the footsteps of the MNCs, by storing their data in the servers hosted in the European coutries and the USA, and they are finding it difficult to access the data to assess the evasion.  They have strongly recommended to the Government to initiate incorporation of stringent clauses in the cyber laws.

Therefore, the SMEs in India should not jump over to this model without understanding the implications involved.  Instead of saving, if the stringent laws are applied, they will be paying very heavily on the customisation and additional reports they may seek to supply to the Government, once this law is implemented.

The current model available is okay for SMEs and in India the cost of storage devices are not that great.

Well I still doubt the capabilities of cloud computing. When you talk about SMEs, I would say you should know two things for sure. 1) SMEs are as vary about the security as is any big organization. 2) SMEs are often spearheaded with one man army people who are also very critical. Now, Cloud computing gives you standard product what about its customized usages. Further, Cloud computing also involves some hidden cost as per usage. The cost factor remains same minus some headache for sure. SMEs are willing to take that headache for sake of customization. I have used Amazon cloud computing environment for website hosting, and I know these things. Also, open source solutions is a very big challenge that cloud computing needs to answer. If you get certain features for free, you won't like to pay for it on a cloud computing environment or will you?
