We were together for a longer time...my first email account was at AOL....once AOL thrilled all of us like anything.  And we still remember their first email account.....later on AOL it just annoyed and disappointed.  Then came the Gmail account which branded a user as young, hip, a player.

With e-mail wars are on at the moment: AOL has launched a makeover campaign with "project phoenix", Gmail keeps lobbing novel features at our screens, and Facebook's new messaging service "social box" threatens to annihilate e-mail as we know it.  The e-mail wars raise lots of issues. Do you really want to entrust more of your life to the privacy pirates at Facebook? Or to Google? Is conventional e-mail about to go the way of the telegram?

I think it will...email will become obsolete in days ahead....as social networking sites and new business technology models will make email to go the way of telegram...which is hardly used these days....and now with smartphones and tablets the whole scenario will change and traditional emails are struggling and social networks like facebook having with email features will drive things as there is everything in it.....and for Gmail and other mailers to integrate social tools is getting all the more difficult....google failed miserably with its google buzz....google wave and few other initiatives in this regard where they tried to cash in on their Gmail userbase...

NO way, Email is still relevant for years to come....people want their emails to be as sane as possible and they really dont want things to get complicated like this where there is social networking and all other apps in one place, this something really personal, and nobody wants their privacy to be intruded and in facebook there is lot of privacy issues and we dont want social networking sites getting access to our personal mails.

Yes, i too feel it is and it will take the place of conventional telegraph as it has more and quicker reach than telegram service. The future of email is very bright.

Due to technological innovations, many changes happen over a period of time. Thus, email may also begin to lose its relevance if a new innovation were to happen over a period of time.

However, at this point in time, email may still continue to be present....

Thanks for the referral, Dipti....

No I don’t think that it is. People will still need the use of e-mail for a very long time. It may be hard to top email but there are ways of improving it for longevity.

We need to understand that email is just a type of packet based communication, emulating the analog format of paper mails. Email will not go extinct, it will evolve. Email is essential for asymmetric communication.Chat, voip can't replace it. What's needed is to better integrate email for unified communication functions.
