Few days back I came across with tis article "Is creative software development dead?"Which reveals  the Software industry commentators and analysts alike have argued that, in 2009, the ‘heavy lifting’ in terms of hard coding from the command line has already been done.

As software engineers increasingly use pre-built automated tools, are we now standing on the shoulders of giants? Is the creative work done, or is there life beyond 'drag and drop' development?

So let us formulate this and have discussions whether  creative software development is dead or not?

No, I don't think so. Software development has actually risen from basic file handling to handling APIs for data response and request. You still need to have the basics intact. Ofcourse, we do not need to code everything now as basic functions and classes are already available with plenty of functional versatality. However, that only helps in robust end product. plus, you spend some time reading the documentation of already provided functions, classes and APIs. Creativity is required  as and when one face bigger challenges in development.

I think today’s programmers are only  left with simplified drag and drop development which inherently requirie less creativity. This means that we are at risk of breeding future generations of programmers with almost no deep-dive knowledge of systems architecture and engineering? May be this will not be complete future because there are some engineers who do use automated development tools need to have an internal knowledge of the APIs and the ‘history’ of the application; to be able to look under the bonnet and gain access to that information store.

But still there is lack of creativity in software development?

What do you says guys?

I agree with Radha and Tanmay. Offcourse we don't re-invent the wheel everytime but can we get along with the wheel discovered in the very beginning? Offcourse not as certain geniuses applied their creativity to bring-up the wheels we witness now. The same holds true even for software development. We had some resource eater ghost applications written in late 90s re-architectured recently to survive the outdate attack.

To me the creativity in software development is still alive. Yes, it can be said that creative development is derived from developments in other fields.E.g. I am working in Telecom domain and because of so many advanced developments in Networks the underlying OSS/BSS layer has to cope up with that and hence new build-up. I also do agree that the creativeness is now more of enhancing the existing ideas and not something anyone ever before thought about, thanks to our dearest friend google ;)

According to me enhanced versions evolve as a result of user requirements and changing functionality demands. Version control and configuration and change management (SCCM) are essential to support the process effectively.
Even if today’s software engineers are standing on the shoulders of giant chunks of legacy development, without SCCM to support the process of examining the construction of these building blocks, they may ultimately prove to be shaky foundations in the long term.

Now a days post-mainframe, client server allowed us to split application processing, data and presentation across two tiers. SCCM is essential for provisioning applications so that they work across an array of devices in different delivery scenarios.

Hence we can say it is creative stuff !!!

Isn't it?
