Is cultivation of Jatropha (a bio-fuel crop) really benefiting farmers?

Cultivating own bio-diesel in wastelands and minimizing our dependence on fossil fuels is being practiced since last one decade. Many State Governments has set up either separate departments, or authority or cell to promote and cultivation of crops such as Jatropha and planting of trees such as Karanj, Neem, Mahua etc. Few of the NGOs has also come forward to push the idea. But, issue now is that are we near to get what we have intended on one hand to produce bio-diesel substantially and on the other  to provide farmers a good option of livelihood from increased farm income from marginal lands.

Cultivation of Jatropha as a bio-diesel crop is good source of increased farm income especially from the marginal land. However, timely application of recommended inputs and executing of agronomic practices is must to get economic return. It is a crop like other horticulture crop, which also need proper care, application of timely inputs and farming practices.
