It is off cource good. But presently the rulers have made mockery of the system. To restore true democracy India need a dectator for atleast 5 years, who would set the complete system right, ruthlessly punish the black marketiers, hoarders, corrupt officials and politicians, make a single rule - natonal one - for all religions like china did, then restore democracy.

While I agree some of the points mentioned here, i largely disagree Democracy for India. I have a reason for this, Democracy is for the people who have self discipline, patriotism and respect to the mother country. None of our leaders are visionary and they are good at, swindling money as fast as they can. I wish, we implement Military rule for a period of 20 years to bring in all the lost glory.

We are seeing the results of democracy.....people at top are looting money from the common man....too much of corruption, too much of regionalism, too much of indifferences among people in the country and scams and what not.....even after getting independence for more than 60 years nothing has changed.....Democracy is not suiting India at all....

True democracy is the only choice for Indians. This can be achieved by forming a government without corrupt politicians. Here are some ideas on how we can achieve this using social networking tools at this URL. https://sites.google.com/site/restoretruedemocracyinindia/ We have to use the coming assembly elections for this purpose.

Most certainly because after the British left there was no other way other than democracy. We did not have a single powerful leader who could have turned into an autocracy nor a monarch to rule the land. Given the diversity and richness of our land, democracy was the only alternative.

Democracy is the right of every nation, all citizens, all human beings. This is the fundamental right. Everything has two sides: good and Bad. If you mis-use your freedom, it is bad. If you use it properly for the benefit of everyone, nothing like it.

I am at Bangalore. The way things are, one is tempted to say that democracy is not serving India well. However, if you look at Pakistan, we are far, far better. Let us look at the sequence of events : 1. Congress was the ruler and JDs the supporter 2. JDS withdrew support and joined hands with BJP to form government. Both BJP and JDS had an agreement. First turn is for JDS and the next for BJP. 3. After its turn, JDS did not share Chief Ministership. BJP went around, saying that the party did not get CMship and that the JDS dishonoured its own commitment (There was a Dy CM though) 4.In the subsequent elections, neither party again got a majority. 5. There was a brainwave. Operation Lotus. The Governor invited BJP to form the government. To safeguard the government, BJP paid money to MLAs in the opposition, who had just been elected, to resign. BJP did not increase its number. It tried to reduce opposition number!!!! Plus, all independents were given ministership.... 6. There was once a statement that Reddy Brothers will invest 2500 crores to make Sushma Swaraj the Prime Minister. The lady, praised only governance of Janardhan Reddy and Karunakar Reddy in her speech!!! Ideally, that was the day Yadyurappa should have resigned in protest!! 8. BJP ship broke. 18 MLAs went to the Governor and said that they are still BJP members but they do not support this Chief Minister!! There was no whip. Ideally, the CM should have tested majority on the floor of the house. He could have issued a whip and there was opportunity for the 18 MLAs to either honour the whip or violate it. 9. If such opportunity was given, the CM would have lost his Chair. He innovated. Even before the whip was violated, he ensured that all opposition in his party and amongst independent MLAs was silenced by disqualifying them. This issue is still not settled completely 11. When Reddy brothers silenced Sushma Swaraj with lure of the lucre, the CM learnt his lesson. He went on a land grabbing spree. Best route was denotification; even if the notification could be cancelled after twenty plus years... 12. When the Critics said discretionary allotment to Son was not proper and immoral, the CM ensured that the Son surrendered the site. How about the other kit and kin who got discretionary allotment? 13. The first three cases that were filed in Lok Ayukta Court were shameful for any human being. Such blatant corruption and prima facie case made out. 14.The Governor sanctioned prosecution. He did not indict the Chief Minister. How the Chief Minister claims he is victimized? 15. We have excellent judiciary. If a case is filed, we should fight it out and prove our innocence. This is not the case. The worry is not the final verdict. The fear is about filing of the charge sheet. Once it is done, there will be a hundred voices calling for resignation. So, degrade the institution of the Governor and go around claiming partiality towards congress... 18. The BJP had some value. When an open blackmail was heeded to, the BJP lost its moral right to fight for justice and clean public life. 19. Now the Congress.. 20. I was in Delhi recently. Far better technology than 2/3g is available. They are waiting for the Raja scandal to settle. In this process, both DMK and Congress lost face. 21. The commonwealth games was shameful. I am a sports person and organiser. If have a sports project which I am launching myself. If one goes through the proposal, one will come to know that I have taken so much care for avoiding comments and criticism that money of sports persons is being misused...But Kalmade and co. had no such hesitation. 23. Sharad Pawar wants to be free so he can concentrate on ICC. He does not care for Agriculture Ministry. 25. OK. Finally Raja is out. But what is this vigilence commissioner issue. Granted that Sushma Swaraj recorded her dissent. When the CVC appointment became untenable, ask him to resign. Let Sushma Swaraj win this round. That was better than carrying the monkey on shoulders. No more space here

Just because we are democratic, you are able to ask this question. Can you put this out in China or Russia? Think of Govt. stopping you and me posting our opinion on a website. Democracy is for patient understanding people like we are. As for the system failure, which we see in our govt./judiciary today. Its a good sign. For we now believe corrupt should be punished. We now believe all state-heads/bureaucrats/govt. office holders are accountable. Don't you think, its only now, that ministers/judges/bureaucrats are getting caught like never before, while such offices were synonymous to corruption and enjoyed power in the past. You seemed to have forgotten standing in line for your sugar and kerosene while the govt. servant up there played tricks.

Very correctly stated - it is the system which collapsed her. In fact I believe, in a contry where 80% population doesn't have literacy/proper knowldge/values/morality, how the democracy system will work successfully. The 80% population struggle for their lives and anyhow manages the bread just to keep themself live. These category does not think beyond these lines, forget about education or may it be patriotism. In the past 62 years, we are not able to uplift our poor society so in other wards "killed the democracy, and so system collapsed".Have an example of urban people and rural people and weigh there knowldge/values/right of being Indian, one can easily have answer.

Question cannot be answered in just yes or no. one cannot define the word "Democracy" as he/she feels, one should put some stress on mind while talking about it. We had fought it for decades and today when every country, every person place an example of INDIA as biggest democratic Country in the world, we people of India still thinks whether democracy is good for us. I think we have more important issue to resolve then this and above all we should not forget we are the one who twist the things according to our comfort and need. It also need less to say that its time where we have to change ourselves first then to blame the system or administration because we the one who holding a charge of it. So think of it.

India, in fact, has been a democratic country in most of its history, albeit, not in the form that is widely held as democratic in the contemporary context. If democracy refers to deriving governing power from the people, citizens of India have recorded history of pulling down kings owing to bad governance. Even in its weakest form democracy is more stable than any other form of governance, so yes, democracy is appropriate for India. Nevertheless, it sure needs several rounds of reforms at several levels including rejecting pseudo-secularism, dynastic politics, bureaucracy, and populism to name a few whilst giving preference to economic support to caste-based reservation. Most of all, we need to unequivocally unsubscribe from the western approach to development. Indians have believed in diversity, and in diversity there is no minority or majority based on your personal preferences. I guess the topic is worth a thesis, but i believe a strong democracy is the only possible form of governance that can be stable and progressive.
