The recent comment by the Sports minister Mr. Gill has created a controversy kind of a thing in the sporting fraternity in the country, as the Indian government said F1 is not a sport it is just an entertainment, and it was rejected because "it (the race) would have no impact on the development of sports in the country".

The basic premise of the ministry is that F1 is not needed in India and the money can be spent on development of disciplines which have a wider base in the country, than on F1.

And after the inspired performance by Force India in the recent Belgian grand prix, Mr.Mallya slammed Mr.Gill regarding this issue. And he said F1 has a huge growing fan base in India, particularly amongst youngsters. The sport is probably the most widely watched sport in the world. The viewership on TV is next to Olympics or Football World Cup. He said "I can't understand anyone who says it is not a sport."

What do you think guys is F1 a Sport or just an Entertainment?

I think the government is being ridiculous first they said that they will support F1 in India now they are saying that its not a sport and its just an entertainment, i don't understand this stance from the Government, i think F1 is a sport and not just an entertainment, without it being a sport it would not be a highly viewed sporting action across the world and just imagine what it would have done to India, it would have brought huge money interms of TV rights and whole other package that F1 is associated with and especially there is a huge fanbase in India for this kind of sports and it would have done a real good for Indian audience who jsut thrives on cricket and nothing else, so F1 would have given something more for a cricket crazy nation.

So according to me F1 is truly a sport and not just entertainment. would like to know others view on this one.

Sudeep, we are also trying to explain the same thing, that F1 is a sport but not for Indians..! Since you believe that we are wasting time on watching cricket the whole day.. same thing goes with any other sport, be it F1 racing or even Motocross!! Once our nation builds a good rapport with the road conditions, infrastructure, fight food supplies, fights all other things which have high priority to work upon.. we can think of having a F1 too.!! Let our nation be the one where no one has to die because of food, or shelter.. let everyone enjoy the daily transportation and have good earnings to spend.. then only Govt should promote these sports.. it will look nice on their part.. i believe

F1 Is a soprt but it is not given importent in India because there is no good roads so sports car can not run on it and to hide this facts the goverment says that there is no need of this kind of sports if we orgnised the F1 race in India then we can  have nica  income to earn by goverment.

I see it definitely as a sport and a keenly followed and contested sport. As towards the comment that we need to spend a lot of money to bring it to India and hence is a waste, my arguement is that today every sport has also the commercial angle attached to it. Just understand the kind of revenue this sport generates throughout the world and in the times when the world is looking at India as a potential Automobile Hub, this will attract much more revenue and interest than anticipated.

I would like to disagree with Mr. Satwinder here, as i have been closely following formula 1 races for a quite some time now, and i think it has all the making of being a great sporting action in the country and the 177 crore which we are talking here for just to join the F1 arena is a very less amount according to me as later there are various ways that F1 generates the money and money that an F1 race generates in a single race really huge and this will also help many other sports with the money that F1 brings due to the race and then the viewership it generates is  amazing and people follow these races like crazy and it will also increase the number of travellers to the country and it will increase revenue in various streams, i think they should allow F1 races to be held in India according to me.

Satwinder is right here, Racing is not that indians are well associated it is a form of entertainment for us there are many other sports which needs attention if not we will be loosing out on those sports and talents for that matter.even though F1 brings a lot of money we do not have that kind of infrastructure to hold races and each race costs millions of dollars.  It would not be advisable to hold F1 at this juncture when there are many things that needst to be taken care of as Mr. satwinder has mentioned.

F1 coulds be a sport for other countries, but for India it's entertainment!!

Govt has to bear 1.77 cr to UK for this, why to waste money where we can't have a sport which boost any levels of Indian citizens.

Instead why not invest and promote our National Sports!! So govt. agrees to take it as an Entertainment not as a sport and I agree to it!
