We cannot come to a conclusion for this topic. This is not a black and white answer .Secondly not all Gen Y are opportunistic its just that opportunities have opened up a lot for the Gen Y. However is the same opportunities were opened up for Gen X or even primitive Gen. They would have still done wonders. In between Black and White there are different shades like grey , light grey , light white etc etc and we are generalizing a whole sect of society in two brackets Gen X and Gen Y. Isn't ridiculous ? A human species is divided on the basis of years and ages ?

Hi Priyanka An interesting topic. I agree with your view completely.Today's generation wants handsome salaries along with a 9 to 5 job.Everyone wants to be a smart worker i.e. needs the credit even if performed by someone else...and everyone wants to save enough by 40 and move to become a budding entrepreneur....You ask any person to stay late for an hour and you will get an answer in negative....

IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND IN TODAY`S GENERATION THE ATTITUDE TO ANCHOR AND GROW WITH THE ORGANISATION.MOSTLY PEOPLE WANT ANYTHING INSTANT,DO NOT HAVE PATIENCE,PERSEVERANCE OR ENDURANCE. MOSTLY HASTY DECISIONS ARE TAKEN WHICH TURN OUT TO BE WRONG SOONER THAN LATER.ON THE CONTRARY MOST PEOPLE ARE HESITANT TO SHOULDER RESPONSIBILITIES.

This is the roots of the new what can be called the old public sector syndrome. Less work, more pay. A fresher gets today what his gen-x rated parent used to dream as a finishing salary. Older generation were taught certain values, had pride of commitment, professional delivery. It is not there today.

Not only this, I find that the dedication to work, the level of Quality and Professionalism that are required are missing. Given something "free" they want more of it. Recently, as a HR Manager, I tried to organise a follow-on course. This was for a previous similar course after which the trainees were supposed to take a certification examination. "Exam too hard, No time etc." were standard excuses. The response to my effort was astounding! They now wanted "free study period-time of 3 weeks paid study leave and what else. The commitment to sit for and write the exam was however not there. Except in a few cases, I find that the dedication and zeal are totally missing.

I think gen y is on the right track. But they are late! look at the Americans and Europeans, the salary they get, are always sufficient to give then very comfortable and luxurious life style. However we still fight to buy one car after 10 years of job. Moreover, they dont work harder than us. They have been given more time to enjoy and live their life after normal working hours. I think, that is one reason; western ppl can do more innovative and exceptional works. Like, many times you would have heard ppl riding bike for world tours..who are they...Indians!!...never!!! Most of them are from western countries!! Indians, whole life got spent in saving money from their limited salary.

The present organizational policies do not encourage the gen y to participate in the enterprise. They work as per the JD and the salary denominated for it.

I do not agree with the statement. I am a part of this generation and being a member of the same group I can say for sure that younger people are still hard working and mostly look for opportunities where their can put their full potential to work as well as not measure the quality of work with the salary figure. They word hard to achieve a better life and I think that they are not just for the money. Forward thinking again may them in this grey area where we cannot judge the attitudes on all depending on the actions of a few.

I dont agree with this statement that today's generation are hopping jobs for mere fat pay cheques. This can be one of the factor but there are other factors too which contribute to job hopping. Secondly coming to the issues that getting fat cheques and working less hours..can't be true.In the gov.t enterprises still we can consider that there are some sort of babudom and we can still have some leisure hours in the office but the private companies and the MNCs which nowadays are paying fat cheques are also making the worth of their cheques by complete utililization of an employee. There has been instances where some companies has gone for lay backs of employees because nowadays no private company is going to pay you if you sit back and do nothing. There are dedicated persons who still work for the company and they are worth of the pay that they are getting. It is because of these good persons that a company maintains its corporate image and obviously if right brains dont work properly and only run after fat pay cheques then one day all the companies would go bankrupt and nothing would remain to fill the appetite of the employees. Every rule has an exception, like that every company has some moody, temperamental employees but with few of them we cant conclude that everybody or most of the generation runs for fat pay cheques.Job hopping is mainly concerned with human satisfaction.people will stay there where they will feel that their basic priorities are getting fulfilled like recognition, self esteem and company work culture and obviously pay scale. We should never forget that we earn to sustain..and there is no hiding the fact that if there would have been no payments and monetory benefits half of us would stop working..so if remuneration is coming like this why not??and why talk about dedication and sincerity.... saswati

The most important aspect we are all forgetting is the development of the west and central Europe from the medieval age till today ; and the strategy of the out sourcing industry. We have used outsourcing as a golden concept and gave name called globalization but to be frank like " the farmer who looks at his gooses we should realize the eggs are never golden" they have cracks. Outsourcing or Globalization or Colonization is never new as yesterday the same tea went to London and returned back to India with the label of yellow coloured famous tea bags today the same software is build by the same engineers and we buy in pirated or original and we use it at the price of several dollars the indian engineers slog their night out in the office at the price of good lakh apartment in a nice metro city. Coming back into leisure. - “Leisure is a state of being in which activity is performed for its own sake.” – Aristotle
- “Man does not cease to play because he grows old; man grows old because he ceases to play.” – George Bernard Shaw
- “Leisure is a state of being in which activity is performed for its own sake.” – Aristotle
The Greeks believed that a person's prudence, morality ,and wisdom was directly proportional to the amount of leisure time that person had. If i talk of countries like swiss there the youth believes in leisure as an integral and vital part of his or her life. The Gen Y and even the Gen X to certain extend did have leisure but the Gen X were poorer and our economy was a red tape dhoti economy . Thanks to 1991 reformation things have opened up however the money that is coming is also equally going back due to the concept of credit cards thats the bad part. And for that we need to thank ourselves as we are a hugely outsourced economy is it really helping us or a few capitalists. ? The Gen Y is right on their part and the Gen X is unable to understand this huge difference why because no one thinks of yesterday ; today the inflation is climbing up and higher. The Gen X bought half litre milk for 4 Re or may be even lesser today the Gen Y pays 11 Re for half a litre milk . Has anything changed or are we having blinkers ? The reason for a fat pay is this a good shelter cost lakhs of rupees and talking of the mortage ? Is the country or the economy concerned ? The most important question i have is this . How many hard working countries in the world ever prospered are we great in GDP and HDI ? Our GNP IS 310$ For a billion people is it worth it ? Did the Gen X really succeeded anything for Gen Y ? Did Independence gave us a welfare based economy or was it in the hands of those few people (who are dead now) thought independence was worth it ? Does work or hard work ever make a nation prosperous ? Organizations merge (mate) swallow each other after all the individual has only one life in this earth. Its the individual's duty to live life and explore his true potential ? . He cant carry his bio data or the number of hours he has worked in his funeral. Only his potential develops and the leisure , art , hobbies is something he would be remembered for ? Looking on an realistic side if all the knowledge is gathered analyzed the Gen Y or Gen Z can a bring together a world economy into a single platform of currency , jobs , leisure , welfare and radical humanism. "Old Bureaucrat, my comrade, it is not you who are to blame. No one ever helped you to escape… Nobody grasped you by the shoulder while there was still time. Now the clay of which you were shaped has dried and hardened, and naught in you will ever awaken the sleeping musician, the poet, the astronomer that possibly inhabited you in the beginning. - Antoine de Saint Exupery"

warm greetings to everyone !!!! well this topic is an interesting on indeed and very close to my heart since i have contributed a research paper on "managing Y generation" in a national seminar. See, i believe everyone is special in their own way..Baby boomer excel in their work in their own style but this is a fact of life indeed that time keep on changing too..therefore the working style indeed..Gen Y do seek for more delightful work environment but it does not mean that they are not performing..In my research I have gone through lots of articles which mention that Gen y are more challenging..Gen Y love their own space..though they seek for enjoyment they do complete the task..see leisure time or a work hour..people should enjoy...and this is what the Gen Y do...so no harm..every human being is good..n every human is a best performer...the moment we realize what our duties are...

Dear Priyanka, This topic is about materialism in reality. please don't generalize the entire generation. it may be easier to say so from your position but in truth We follow what we see around. Society has failed to show anything better than materialism. Wrong examples are being set day by day. generation is misled. Old values and morals are history. legacy is lost. blaming young gen won't help. we need to rebuild a society where we can demonstrate the right way of living to our younger fellows. We shall take them beyond what is visible to mere eyes.

Dear Vikas, Our generation is mostly under the influence of today's materialistic society, in which only money matters. Old values, morals etc are history. we follow what we see today. unknowingly we put ourselves in the rat race to become richer ever. Who to blame? We have lost our legacy long ago. how do we trace it back? This topic is incomplete and is beyond any rating. It questions the society, where it is taking the youth today? we shall avoid generalizing and stereotyping the younger generation.

On the base of reseraches I know, it seems not. Of course we have to take care of heavy influence of cultural dimension. What is "true" in a certain region could be not the same in another. It seems that they are highly sensitive to growth opportunities (that's not immediately "fat pay checks") and to a different balance work-life (that's not "less work hours" but probably more like "greater flexibility" of labor organization)

Its true but not 100% , since the birth of child we are the ones who are bringing this attitude in them, we keep high expectation from them in all terms. Same they expect from the company, more n more. Earlier the life was more compititive in profession phase and school and college competition was not that tough.. Now since childhood they have a stressful routine that they want more of comfort in their professional life

I apparently fall under the category of generation "y"...I assume thats the generation that loves to question........ I don't completely disagree with the article, but it fails to mention that generation y is more opportunistic and look for ways to move up faster than generation x. We are less content with what we have and have greater expectations. If you think about it, its because of generation x we are like that.
