Google Inc, the internet search giant has been planning for an all-out assault on the mobile-phone market via its own branded handset, which is called the “Nexus One.” The new device will be one of the most advanced Smartphones present in the market with Android operating system and a large screen, and is directed to challenge Apple’s iPhone supremacy in the sector. It is reported that the handset would be sold via T-Mobile in US and unlocked version that can be capable of operating on any network, and will be available next month.

According to reports, the new Nexus One will run Android 2.1 software and will be manufactured by HTC, exclusively for Google. It seems that the device is expected to feature onboard camera, Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Bluetooth, A-GPS (with Google Maps) and 3.5mm audio jack. Google has designed the entire user experience for the handset and it will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor.

It is presumed that the device may steal the show from popular Android devices like the Motorola Droid, but the main question is, can it stand tall against the Apple’s iPhone?

I think yes and the main reason here is the name Google and many already predict that the new device from Google will challenge Apple’s iPhone dominance. Though the phone is yet to be launched but, people expect that Google’s official backing and design would certainly be welcomed with an instant fan base. Just like Apple, Google has also a huge base of trusted fans who would be the future buyers of this google phone.

Google may be a big name on the Internet but it has no experience in Gadget making.Apple has a definitive advantage here with a long list of successful products - the Macs, the phenomenal iPod, the iPhone etc.

Just because my homepage is www.google.com doesn't mean I will buy a Google-Phone. We do not go to McDonalds to buy a laptop, do we?

Judging from the reviews and picture, the Google-Phone seems to be a iPhone "me too". It has nothing revolutionary or innovative in it. It have absolutely nothing to challenge the iPhone.

And those who are arguing for Google's strengths & success, please consider Google have their fair share of failures. They have failed in their many recent ventures like - Google Docs, Orkt (those who haven't heard it is a Social Network), Blog, Groups etc. Their recent "innovation" Google Wave is going to flop judging by the reaction from the users.

Most notable fact is the current phones built around Google's Android OS failed to create any impact even after T-Mobile's backing (subsidy). The same Android will be used in Google-Phone. So, without subsidy, the Google Phone will go nowhere.

well this Google have a great competitor "(Apple)", then also in this current scenario now to say who can do something new & different at what time. GOOGLE has a power & ability to capture market in this new field. They have to just create a new styles and qualitative devices, for that they also have a capability to create new applications those who can't copied by others.

Yes the new device can take against apple's iphone. Though Google seems to be a new entry in the mobile handset, the features that provided is quite amazing and tempting and can take in more audience who would be going in as customers. Take for instance google maps when it is easily accessible through a device, more people would be interested to use those features rather than using the standard phones.  The price point is quite important to differenciate between the Apple iPhone, Google phone audiences. It is sure to cover more people of all ages from 20 to 60..

It might be an issue for Google to position the Google Brand with a Mobile Phone. But, I think it is matter of time before it gets the market. Apple is leading the High-end model at the moment, but unless they keep up with new features it will be tough for them to survive. In electronic gadgets the niche of today becomes commodity of tomorrow. Remember Nokia Mobile Handset followed by Sony Ericsson and now iPhone. So, discounting Google phone would be a big mistake.

Firstly of all i am skeptical about the launch of the so called "Google phone ", two years before , such rumours about a google phone were prevaling and then google came with a bang and not only  introduced its operating system Android but also created an ecosystem of alliance companies , netowrk operators , developers etc.... some thing broad .

THis time i still expect something similar as Google is known to carry some smart marketing tactics .Bit then lets still assume this nexus one is launched ,

in my opinion , it will be a trend setter .We need to recall the iphone didnt do anythign unique apart from having a cool UI .It certainly lacks the underlying tech.Tell me something can yo multitask on iphone ?? If you go through the specs , it doesn't multitask.Apple did set a trend of cool touch screen phones without keypads,

Similarly , Google will go one step ahead and  will set a trend of phones to be carrier independent , have apps fully supporting voice recognition, and an accelerometer to understand your daily life ( i literally mean it !!!) they have a patent for this

Coming to the failures of Google , with due respect to MR. ikthiar's words  , i wish to point out some important things.Email was invented around 30 or so years before, the protocols were complex, the machines were only mainframe developed only by IBM and the like ,Queen Elizabeth sent the first ever email in history ,then came hotmail and the world was mad over it .

No one could have ever predicted that in just a decade or so , we will have something with AJAX, have gadgets all over  , observe ADS relevent to our emails !!!!so much so that it becomes the corporate language of communication !!

Google aims something similar ,WAve isn't just another from of email and if people are not using it now doesn't mean it doesn't fit in the digital lives of people .What they have done is identified problems we have today with communication (speed vs real time ,text vs content richness, one vs many recepients  )and addressed it in their own way and have even opened the doors to extend it further.

Monetary benefits should not be the only measure of success but rather the impact it does on mankind to make life a bit more fun and exciting ----and i believe Google does that very well.

September 4, 1998, 10 years.

Google is getting bigger and bigger. They have established their dominance in search engine, Android requires some patchwork, but is running good, and now Chrome OS will arrive. Even though they might not have guys who built really good hardware, but their OS is capable of giving proper instructions to the hardware. It seems they are pretty clear that they are serious about jumping into hardware too.

If you remember, Microsoft originally a software company, launched Xbox [you might be familiar with the device if you use gaming console]. Now Xbox holds 2rd or 3th position in Gaming consoles, they are sellings computer peripherals too.

Phone, that's one more step for Google. This will be an interesting battle between two giants. Apple made some deals without competition by selling 6-8,000 bucks hardware for 36,000, but not anymore.

Google took on Microsoft and Yahoo earlier, result: succeeded.

Hmmm, I think Google can beat iPhone quite easily, even if it doesn’t; we will definitely see price drop for iPhone. Steve Jobs will miss his geek buddy, Steve Wozniak!

sad to see the customer service being given by Google , this was not expected . Some of  MR Ikhtiyar's words have come true.

Foe some reason , i still feel the Admob acquisition and other video compression research going under Google will not go in vain .SOmthing in this regard will soon pop up , the way it did when Google launched adwords , we can't deny the fact that it is the biggest adversiting model on the web and no one does it better than Google ,

Something similar is needed for the computing / mobiling /cell phone using needs of the users and i am optimistic it will come from Google .

After One week, it's not about "if Google will", it's now "Google failes". Google sold 20,000 phones in first week whereas 1.6 million iPhones were sold. You don't call that a killer, do you? Read:http://www.businessinsider.com/the-nexus-one-starts-slow-only-sold-20000-units-in-its-first-week-2010-1

In my earlier post I suggested that Google may be big in Search Engine, but they have no idea of retail marketing. That is also evident in their mess with selling. I am putting two links for you to read. I am not sure anybody will feel sorry for the customer who was treated like this. No sir, it is not a free software, it's a $530 phone. He deserves a much better treatment. It is not some shady low cost market where you can get away by ripping customers.

I hoped (really) that Nexus One should give Apple a run for their money against my gut feeling. But Google failed miserably. The numbers are not at all encouraging. The heading should be changed as it is already clear that NexusOne is not going to challange iPhone (or any other smartphone for the matter) seriously, at least with the current setup and features.

Google have a Customer Support which reverts back to you via emails with a delay of 2 days! There is no Hotline or Phone Number to call if you face problems!! Sorry, this is not a good way to treat your customers who have just paid $530. It is not a Free Software where we do not expect Customer Support.

Already the Nexus One is termed as a "Droid Killer", cannibalizing the most successful Android handset available. This is sure to piss off Motorola and other Android handset makers.

Judging from the arguments, I understand that many of us haven't used an iPhone yet. Google Maps is right in the Home Screen of iPhone. So can Gmail, Google Earth, and Google Mobile if you download them for free from the App Store. These are available not only in iPhone but also in all Nokia & other smartphones for free.

Talking about features in Google Phone (NexusOne), can anybody name one in NexusOne which is not present in any high end smartphons (Nokia N & E series)? a 0.2 inch bigger screen and a slightly stronger processor is not going to make NexusOne that much compelling.

Looks Google have a bad start in the US:

http://consumeraffairs.com/news04/2010/01/nexus_oneb.html

Anyone cheating consumers in the first day can't expect to go far. Search NexusOne in any search engine (including Google) and the above page will come up.

Apple products generate much passion among it's users. Google products on the other hand is more about functionality. I admit that I am a big fan of Google products like Gmail, Earth, Maps, Picasa. However, Google will have to fight with pure emotional attachement whioch Google will find much harder to beat.

No matter how useful the Google Phone will be, I am not going to throw my iPhone. Just ask the iPhone users and you will get the same respons. yes, iphone can't multitask, it doesn't have a bluetooth unless jailbroken, it can't tether. So what? millions of iPhone are being sold and 99% of them are using it happily. Do you think they will switch just because some functionaity? I doubt that. They already have many alternatives if they were that inclined or unhappy with it.

On the other hand, Google is purely functional. i use Gmail and others because they work better than other available products. I will immidiately switch in case i found a better alternative. that's why some google products (Orkut, Reference, Docs etc.) failed. Mr. Shekhar mentioned about Google Wave and one to many communication. this is the worst of Google products. It is nothing but an incompetent copy of Facebook's Status update or wall posts. it will never replace emails as we will need a one to one private communication. Please search the web and you will findmostly negative respnses.

I like Google challanging some big names and i would love them to succeed but the reality is that Google does not and will not raise the level of passion as Apple.

Google will go one step ahead and  will set a trend of phones to be carrier independent

My Point: Apple is already doing this although Carrier subsidy is a hugely successful way in developed markets. Due to carrier subsidy, iphone is much cheaper than any comparable phones in developed markets.

Tesco, UK's leading retail shop is already started selling iPhone without carrier dependency although sale is strong with O2. And  Apple have the option to signup with other operators. In fact many operators will do almost anything to have iPhone exclusivity.

Google have apps fully supporting voice recognition,

So, does iPhone. Bing have voice reconginion search. So you say "Airtel" and it will start searching for PAirtel on Bing. Also  try Shazam to see what can be done. It will blow your mind.

and an accelerometer to understand your daily life ( i literally mean it !!!) they have a patent for this

My Point: MS have tried something similar with their personalized menu in Office and Windows. Those who can, deactivate it and those who can't live unhappily with it. This is much theoritical and will took ages to implement successfully. And every failed attemp to understand your life will make the user uinhappy.

Google is placed at software level competition, and they are very clear not in the product segment, Google supply operating systems to(OEM) Mobile Manufacturer's(Acer, HTC already incorporated Android OS)

Competition is against windows OS mobiles, as we all know apple corporation is known for innovation in products off course they would have their own OS for apple products..

I think it is people who got confused, fact is that iphone faces competition form other mobile manufacturers not by google.
