The growth of personalized medicine, aiming to become better target treatments to patients through the use of information about an individual’s genes, proteins and environment to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, is changing the healthcare industry and increasing the number of alliances between diagnostic and pharmaceutical businesses.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers’ report, moving towards personalized medicine, reviews the flurry of deal activity in the past few years in the in vitro diagnostics (IVD) sector and discusses significant events for personalized medicine, a field which is fast rising to prominence in healthcare innovation. Topics covered include M&A and licensing deal activity, regulatory developments on biomarker testing, partnerships with the pharmaceutical industry, significant events beyond deal activity, case studies and key drivers of future revenue growth for personalized medicine diagnostics.

What do you think guys, is healthcare industry moving towards personalized medicine?

Yes the health care industry is slowly but steadily moving towards personalised medicine. But when the term personalised is used it need not absolutely mean individualised. It is a known fact that a particular generic product affects/interacts differently among individuals. Previously, the drugs that were manufactured were not studied in all the population of its intended use. But now, yes a lot of clinical studies are being conducted to access this differential effects especially in India with such highly diversified population (culture, food/living habits, terrain etc), based upon which the pharma industries can modify their product to suite different sects of population. Therefore with increasing co-ordination b/w health care centres and Pharma industries this differential effects will be better resoved and in turn provide a better personalised medicine (if not immediately but soon)

It has a long long way to go.... Most of the current research is being done in Western countries, validated with caucassians/european population. Thers no much data with respect to INDIA.. for that matter any developing countries.

I am not arguing against the recent trend of personalized medicine.  On the hand, I am for it.  I only want to draw the attention of the readers to one of the disadvantages of this personalized medicine.  It is well known that there has been too much emphasis, of late, on diagnostic tests.  There is a feeling that doctors are asking for too many tests.  It may or may not be justified in all cases.  This trend is so much evident after the proliferation of corporate hospitals in recent years.  It is the poor patients who have to grin and bear with all these.  "Personalized medicine" may actually increase the number of tests that the patients are asked to undergo.  If this factor is kept in mind, "personalized medicine" is fine'

I also think Healthcare industry is moving towards personalised medicine. The process of encouraging the use of a biomarkers and diagnostics to guide drug development is growing day by day. Though the process of testing drugs on a patient by patient basis is very expensive and challenging, the doctors are coming up with new technologies which is capable of doing these tests. I am sure very soon we will be able to do these tests on person to person basis...

I think yes. Healthcare industry is moving towards personalised medicine. The current relation between the pharma and diagnostics industries could become an "insiston" rather than just “encourage” the use of a biomarkers and diagnostics to guide drug development. Such necessity is always more challenging to promote the value of an expensive drug without having a companion diagnostic to justify its use on a patient by patient basis.

It is not so easy to personalise medicine. Because till now, all the medicine were made in a generic manner. If medicines are personalised, then it will be very tough to target individuals through drugs as a result pharma companies will be in a great loss. So, personalisation may occur in future after a few decades but I don't think it is going to happen very soon....
