We all know that Indian companies are making their presence globally, they are adopting newer models to commit frauds. Mainly in the IT industry, most frauds are being detected in the human resources division. But the most prevalent cases of fraud are being noticed in the procurement division. One company may bid for the same tender under different names. After a vendor bags a contract, the bills keep coming in and payments get processed, without the goods physically coming in.

Another prominent sector is among PEs. Although they invest in many entrepreneurial ventures, it is hard to track where the money is going. In a recent survey, over 60% of respondents said that they faced frauds in their organizations. Many estimate that their financial loss to be Rs.10-100 million per organization. Corporate frauds are not easily get traced by people, except when it reaches to the saturation point as seen in the recent Satyam case.

According to you, is HR division, the most fraudulent in Indian IT companies?

I agree - the HR has been a ground for poor ethical practices and not being legally aware (how many HR know that it is illegal in India to club PF portion of employer as salary in employment letters? How many HR have strong-armed people into resigning?), but the more occurs in procurement, finance and sales. Poor HR is a badly treated cousin of all the support staff and what ill is does is small compared to what happens in other departments.

Samir Das, you are the Tech Architect in a renowned IT Co. - you are best to know what is happening in IT Cos. But by now we know what happened in Satyam where so many false ID and Employees were created to cyphone ficticious salary bill.

In the eyes of a nonIT man like me, the knowledge industry ( IT ) is clean. But that may not be always true. You mentioned other fields also where frauds are being done. We often blame politicians for all corruption/frauds. But, we know, frauds are equally done by Professionals too.

We may thank you for raising these issues and hope go on enlightening us on such scores as an " insider". Becoz .. we here deal with facts and nothing else. One allied thinking : some are propossing to form a Political Party 2be run by "Professionals" .. may we get ahead ?

HR is responsible for the main works by employees in an organisation. If any fraud occurs, naturally fingers will point them. It is hard to believe they don't know anything about the frauds going on. Still, if they are mime, it shows they are also getting something to keep quiet which proves they are the topmost frauds. Companies need to show zero tolerance on these matters and should be proactive in analysing frauds.

We can't blame HR for everything. In big MNCs, there are many mediators between HR and employees. Many a time, they don't even come to know about the frauds. Just because they are responsible for Human related activities, they can't be blammed. Also, we Indians learn a lot of corporate lessons from corporations abroad so, Indian corporates can't do the same mistake that developed economies have made. If we do the same mistake, it will impact on the reputation we have created outside the country especially in the area of outsourcing.
