By definition innovation is making something which exist better then what it was so you need to know what exist, you got to copy, imitate whether you make money and do R and D, straight come up with your product it’s your strategy, or else its Munnabhai games its good on vcd Dvd’s multiplex or if you doing something all totally new its invention, Wright brother invented air craft Boeing etc. has only innovated. Anand ji you are from electronic solution, why are you talking about pharma, Ms Puja Value is one’s perception why imitation, doing nothing writing blogs watching’s birds, filtering on the street, fooling around any dam thing.

perhaps we cant be so inclined to only one thing all time, may be imitating(or doing) a thing with improvisation cannot be termed as bad too,on the other hand inclination to imitation only is not good too, In between the two i think innovation does have an upper hand to greater extent, sure thats true, but innovation can be an extention of a thing which is already exist.I believe innovating rightly by (even)imitating a thing would not be as much bad provided one must have thought of a genuine idea about the thing and not for recognition or such things

innovation surely is valuable, perhaps on few occasions the things may require some changes to make it perfect and it is the rework of something may not b called an imitation

"Value has a value only if its value is valued" Snobbishness in the work place, clash of interests, discriminations based on rank, restriction on jurisdiction, lack of resources, regulatory constrains, lethargic boss, managment empahy etc. that do not make any effort to value the value of their valuable innovations often let down most innovative persons, and few make it to the end. Imitators seldom suffer these, as copiers have different mindset. I have many personal experiences, but it is unethical to say it loud.

Immitation is not a good substitute right because inovation means inventing some new ideas ,its not just copying and pasting or giving your editing to already exiting idea.Nowdays people dont have patience to innovate ,they just search through google engine and get the editing done, that's all. Most of the people do this.So I think imitation is more valuable nowdays.

Imitate not verbatim, improvise is innovation. Very simple. One to one imitation is not good, will end up in failure

Imitation helps to sustain the market and the momentum. However, innovation backed up with implementation of the innovative idea is the key to greater value in the long run. Many times innovation fails because the ideas are available but they are not translated into action. Only when the innovation is implemented and accepted by the masses does the innovation become successful. On the other hand, imitation is easier and leads to revenue generation as the original idea is copied and this translates to revenue generation. But imitation can be sustained only if Innovation is present. Thus, from the long term perspective, Innovation is the most valuable technique for sustenance in the market. However, using imitation based on the original innovative idea to generate further revenue also ensures that the organization survives for some more time in the market. However, the organization needs to invest in future innovative techniques to survive rather than depend only on imitation to go forward in the future. This is because a new innovation may render the earlier imitation obsolete and it may take some time to copy the new innovation and thus market share will be lost and it may not be possible to re-group quickly to survive further in the future. Thus, a prudent strategy will be to focus on innovation to build a strong organization. This may be coupled with imitation to generate sales and build revenue. However, stricter copyright and patent laws coupled with stronger security measures may make it difficult to imitate in the future. Additionally, some ideas are difficult to be imitated easily. All these factors can hinder organizations which depend on only imitation to survive for the future. In retrospect, the organizations that have survived for the long term have invested heavily in innovation as compared to imitation...... Thanks for the referral, Puja.....

In my childhood days all sophisticated products used to come from Germany or Japan. It seems somebody from Germany brought a needle thinner than the hair to Delhi and wanted to inquire whether we can make such a thing in India. Our people took it inside to examine it and returned it within few seconds. It is marked "Made in India". The story used to make rounds to prove that we can manufacture anything similar to product made by other countries.

No, pure R&D startegies require innovation, but in marketing a product, you require imitation and then novelty in the product for trademark and copyright issues.

Innovation has its own passion, i have seen some companies are imitating style(usually in cars), Logos, slogans, etc. how long they can survive with imitation. people surely come to know the origin of brand. and if the creator put copyrights trademarks, patients for his brand, the imitator has to find out shortcuts to market his products.

Following footsteps of forefathers is nothing but imitation. But, that does not mean that you have no other options. Imitation has limited span of life and limited scope for further development . Whereas innovation stands generations and the scope of development is wider. Imitation is easier when compared to innovation so also the cost.

The question that you asked was about the value. Innovation is much far valuable than imitation. If you ask about the cost, may be imitation is much cheaper act. You cant even compare innovation with imitation because innovation is an act where a person or team puts continuous effort and bring up many creative insights and implement them. Imitation is where we start from, no doubt. It’s how we learn old methods And once we learn the methods we can find new ways to do things by another method – new knots to tie and ways to hoist our sails. New routes. For long term success it is necessary to be innovative in our ideas, our work.

No, innovation has more value. I don’t think that imitation is more important than innovation because you need innovation to go along with the changing times. Imitation can be ok to a certain degree then there comes a need for change, strategic thinking and innovation. Imitation does have its limits and can only be done for a certain period of time and many times it can be good in a down economy. But many times imitation won’t get you ahead unless a person or company can think of innovative ways to improve on what they're imitating. So innovation would have more value. ~Business Consulting Services: www.CEOBusinessManagement.com

imitation means coping others innovations. we may get a great reputation when we are imitating but it shows that we can do that much only, not more than that. if we have no innovation then we can upgrade others innovation, it is better than imitation

inoovation? We are the person who only use the things and try to learn them how they work. There has been hundreds of years that our mind is setup that we cant be innovate and this is a political thinking that has been imposed to us. just we have to change our thinking and freee from the ideas imposed by others with a pre planned manner. try to understnad the policies of countries that lead........

There is a flaw in your argument. You are talking about innovators without the right planning people for launching the product and other factors like wrong timing. The example you had taken about UNI body , Spark aka Daewoo Matiz and is not a unit body. Its a Hatch back. Unibody design is Maruti Omni.In car world only innovators have stayed in the lead in respective segments. PS : Its imperative to take care of branding aspects as well when you are planning to launch a car . For example the Kizashi from Suzuki may not sell as well as Accord/Camry/Maxima/Teana because the brand is not accepted in D-Segment. When you innovate you need to also understand the timing. There is no point being too ahead of time. Along with innovation = Product planning + Launch timing + Marketing plays a vital role. Innovator may always not succeed the reason being the other factors were not given the right amount of importance. Innovation is important so is Marketing / Sales / A.S.S . Now if you combine all the four , you get a super brand.

Innovation is the call of the millennium. Right from energy to Storage to Marketing to Engineering , those who have lasted is only the companies who have been able to adopt to the challenge. There are lots of examples who have lost out recently for not having kept up with the challenge 1.Sony : once an innovator and the first one to come out with walking music or their 'Walkman' couldnt keep up with the others for innovation. Result : Apple came and cleaned up the portable music industry and also earned the mega brand Ipod for its innovation + packaging (The real company of solid state music drive is a little known company who had the vision but lacked the planning to execute the product launch) 2.GM : Had a head start in world when it comes to innovation but lost out to Japanese giants in the race because of the shortsightedness in understanding the customer demand. and the example goes on and on and on..... Example of Winners Hyundai : As a brand never had the acceptance factor from the mass for selling but recently their continuous development in CRDi technology in diesels have out them right up with the best in the race and from recent times they have earned a goo reputation in B/C segment for their stonking diesel engines. The i20 in India being a premium hatch is still doing great numbers in spite of competition from mature players like Volkwagen in the form of their Polo. The examples can go on the same way......... The crux of the matter is but there is no value addition without innovation. Replication is only for people who think short term and who wants to make a quick buck than a consistent long term growth.

Some great soul once said that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". Imitation is appropriate when the intention is to impress. But innovation is what is required if the world has to move forward. Just imagine where mankind would have been if we simply imitated the pyramids of Egypt. It is only when we took pains to understand the technology behind the pyramids and used that knowledge to bring in innovations in the field of construction, did we come up with skyscrapers that are as mind-boggling as the pyramids.

Imitation implies that something is copied. Innovative means creating by ur own percention/thinking. In that sense I feel Innovation is more valuable. If you are innovative there is no need to imitate.

Innovation is always a brainchild one or a team and of course along time process, confidence and perseverance playing a major role.Imitators very easily modify or make some amendments here and there. There can only be imitation to brands and not to products.

As far as I know its the monkeys who imitate...Imitation coupled with innovation can be a better option than just imitating...However, in the longer run its innovation that keeps the clock ticking with newer opportunities and models...Monkeying around probably may earn you patents/ copyrights etc but remember all those who imitated, they also sprinkled a bit of innovative imitation in them. Just imitation without innovation would never have got us this far in terms of standard of living or otherwise...Companies like Microsoft too have imitated Apple but with it put in their own ideas so that it does not seem like imitation...Imitation has just become a part of our everyday life like purchasing consumer durable that looks similar to your neighbour's or even daily activities like dress codes etc. But I stand by innovation rather than just imitation...Remember, you can imitate only when someone innovates...

If you are referencing to valuable in terms of "money" then yes its worth it for companies to go for imitation. But what cost? In the long run this will have serious impact where we have only imitators & no Innovators! Innovation especially in Pharma plays a important role in defining new solutions to health problems. With urbanization & fast life additional to pollution there are new diseases that creeps in now & then. Imitation has to be balanced with Innovation. How do we do this? Imitation gives you the revenue to invest on R&D for innovation. Hence a company which can balance this will sustain in the growing markets.
