It is not issue of debate. Because first of all we have to decide that what we are talking about? About INDIA or INDIANS !!

If we are talking about Indians then we are very poor till now.....

Many Indians are very rich & other side more than 40% people are not able to eat one time in a day & approx. 30% people are just spending their all earning to cover the basic needs. They don't have any idea about black money or money making instruments because it doesn't matter for them. WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT IT IS JUST BECAUSE OF BLACK MONEY? BIG NO There are hundreds of problem, endless issue. I am sure that if black money comes back in India even then it doesn't make effect on poverty line. Because we can't believe on our Govt or you can say politicians...

Yes if you are talking about top richest 10% population or rest of upper middle class then we can say that Indians are also rich.

Overall we can't say that India is not poor country. Because country becomes with his population rather than population becomes with country.....

Puneet by seeing this information I don't think we are a poor country. Our countries growth has been stooped by those business men who have saved those money instead of rotating it into the market.

The government should take initiatives to solve this issue, I don't know why we get loan for other countries when it is with us........

We are no more a poor country....

Actually India is a poor country thats the real fact. still we are under developing nation.our exports are lesser than our imports. agriculture is the back bone of India but its getting reduced nowadays mainly due to real estates business all agricultural lands are becoming plots .politicians are fighting and struggling for their seats not for our country and peoples. every food items of our country are second quality only. for example in tea powders we are getting 2nd and 3rd quality 1st quality is only to export. like that we are unable to get 1st quality in our export products also then how can we say that India is rich country.Internationally, an income of less than $1 per day per head of purchasing power parity is defined as extreme poverty. By this estimate, about 40% percent of Indians are extremely poor.

Not every time education gives you bread to eat.

There are many places in India where there are no opportunities but he people are well educated. What is the use of education with such people when they cant use the education in the proper manner. If you see the Industries comming up are only in Metros or in the 2nd cities. Also for these poor people with good education the polities in the cities is so high to get a job and to sustain that job. In India in the work place it is not the education which is important but it is the political strength which can keep you there. Even if you are there there is no growth in many organisation unless there is a hand of the senior management authority and that hand is given only if you belong his category or the palce where he comes from.

Check out in so many rural areas where people are educated but due to lack of opportunities they keep selling their agriculture land for living.

Is India a Poor Country? it depends on the definition one gives to the words poor and Poverty and the bench mark poverty line. Any impartial person would not agree with the current definitions. According to me Poor means the one who do not have means to buy at least 50% of the goods and services available in the market. Acordingly the base line should be " all those who cannot affors 50% of the goods and services available in the market are poor". When Roads are in bad shape and there is a need to store food for loger days and have entertainment facility at home, how can you say having a refrigerator and TV is laxury? it is the minimum necessacity. Even though our Politicians do not say that these are required for poor some state governments like DMK in TN are distributing TV sets to poor free of cost at least to get their votes.

India is a poor and under developed country. Come to the villages of India where people live hungry and with out adequate cloathing and shelter. 80% of our people live in poor conditions. It is the Politicians and their the rich, who have looted the country by making such policies, rules and regulations does the propagnada that India has become worlds super power and becoming a rich Nation. It is these people give definition to the words " poor and Poverty and Poverty line" to show to the world that india has developped and rich. By keeping money in Swiss banks they have only made that country richer.

This is a good debate... but certain things are neither black nor white... we have shades of gray in between ... Our nation and our people are a good example. We are rich as far as natural resources are concerned. But their exploitation is flawed... The economic wealth is largely concentrated in urban centers. And most of the times, while formulating policies and at the time of execution , we conveniently forget the rural population as well as poor people in cities. All those who say we are not poor should please open their eyes and look around. Each one of us has a deep inner urge to be classified as a developed rich nation but we ourselves are not ready to work for it. The moment our personal interest clashes with national interest , we forget nation. But all said and done, this is an exciting time to be an Indian and be in India. we have the opportunity to shape our nation in the way we want to see it. This opportunity brings hope that makes us rich. So, lets unite and work . Lets think what we can contribute towards our nation. Sagar

In India, there are different class fo people. One Class of people dont want to work & begging in one form or others , so they are poor. Other class want to work, but not getting full time / all season job, so these too are poor. Other class of working people are getting explited, not getting good compensations for their wor & that is middle class. These 3 classes amounts to more than 80% India. Otherwise India is rich by its politicians / businessmen / beuaracrats living standard.

Mr. Vishwanath, Please read the argument again given by me. I wrote that some people who are living "Below poverty line" they do not know about Black money. You are educated person, B.tech student, i never written here that educated population of India don't know about black money.

You have knowledge about the black money and demerits of same. And what will be the accurate use if it will come back to India. But a person who are not able to eat even once a day, he has not idea about same. & more than 40% population of India come under BPL(below poverty line) ...........

Such a question has so many angels :

- India is poor in some mineral items, high-grade coal and in under-ground oil

- some agri products do not grow in India and these are imported

- India was looted directly by the British for 200 yrs long and our wealth in gold, jewellery and diamond have had crossed the border

However, all the above might not have made India a poor nation. We have equally all strength to grow just despite all odds.

- We have a parallel Black-money-led economy which acts as a barrier.

- 10 % of the population has enormous wealth but that do not circulate for the wellbeing of the countrymen.

- 2 % of the wealth is 'stinted' and used in just luxary etc.

- some 40% of the people is just poor and 35 % are in below poverty line - this section may not contribute for growth ( a serious set back )

- 25 % are Middle class (lower, medium and higher) which includes the rich - the Middle Class have all the propensity for  consumption which may bring "growth" ( actually this aspect has brought India in limelight - foreign brands are eager to enter Indiia )

What is remarkable is that, we have a section of "knowledge workers", perhaps the best of the world who deserve to be nurturned further. They are the 'jems' of the population and may prevent India being poor.

It is sad though, but India overall is a poor country. Indian's (a select few) however are far from being poor and that is one reason for poor India.

India has poor laws (2yrs for killing millions of people) but very rich law makers (even the smallest state MP value in multimillion). There are numerous examples of this nature where the country as a whole is loosing out to the richness of a few.

Till this changes, i do not think one can call India rich as a country.

Before we debate on is India a poor country we must define who is poor and how we measure it. At present poverty is measured. Poverty refers to the condition of not having the means to afford basic human needs such as clean water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. Acording  to World Bank 42% of Indians are Poor. Here again what do we mean by clean water nutrition health care and education? What percentage of people above povertyline can afford bottled mineral water. How many villages get protected water supply? How many people can afford a shirt costing >Rs2500. How many can afford health care offered by super speciality hospitals or have health insuranc? How many can afford higher education at good Institutions?

If we consider what the market can offer to people and only those people who can afford 75%-100% of all those goods and servcies are rich and those who can afford 50% -75% as middle class and and those who can afford 25%-50% as normal income category and remaining as poor, then probably 75%-80% of Indians have to be considered as poor and therefore India is a Poor country.

At present in India you can get all sorts of goods and servces and you can by and enjoy all if them if you have money. But most goods and services are ment for the creamy layer constituting hardly 10% of the population and the rest of the people only look at them and only dream. Governments and Development agencies fix a lower standard to measure poverty so that they can show acheivements with respect to eradicating poverty. I am of the openion that India is still a poor country. May be number of rich people have increased in India and also there is an increase in the number of people enering the worlds billionires list and some reaching top levels. All this is hapening at the cost of poor and we try not to eradicate poverty but eliminate poor.

hi Swapna,i don't know at what context this debate is based.in what way we should grade our country? we have plenty of resources, manpower(that too low cost effective),knowledge, culture, tradition and what more is required.if money is the main criteria for deciding rich or poor then one should think that money needs to be generated by proper utilisations of all resources and we are doing that.so answer is YES we are rich.

I think, before debating we should first decide what are the parameters to decide the poor status of the country?...We can't say its rich if we judge it on economical basis.Though it is among top five economies in the world..it lags far behind in per capita income as compared to other countries.Human Development Index is also very low... But if you are going to judge it on socio-cultural and intellectual basis...you cant say India is poor.We inherit greatest culture in world,Quality of education here is one of the best,Intellectually Indians are far more competent than others. We have large pool of human resources,in technical field we are very sound. So in terms of knowledge & culture we can't say India is poor.

Definitely yes! Without becoming too emotional about this issue we need accept the facts and work towards improvement. Refusing to accept that we are economically poor is a bad start; this way we will never strive for the best and will always be content with what we have.

People in forums like these talk about cars, high rise buildings, IT boom etc. The IT sector only employs about 1-2% of India's population. What about the rest? Only 1-2% of India's population owns a car. What about the rest? There has surely been an increase in the standard of living, but only a small percentage of the population has achieved this. What about the rest? The GDP and growth percentages are staggering, but only a very small percentage of the population has actually contributed to this growth. The minimum wage for a person/family to be above poverty line is very low and we still have about 30-35% below poverty line. If we put that minimum wage that we use into international perspective I am sure majority of India's population lives below poverty line.

Culturally we are very rich, but we have to accept that we are economically poor. Only once we accept it will we be in a position to help improve our position.

Yes it is. Please don't go on the figures, come to the real platform where you will find the facts. In India still people are dyeing of hunger. 70% of population is BPL. Crores of people are without basic facilities i.e water and elect and food. I don't think until unless the government works out on the bringing Swiss a/c money back how you can say that we are not poor and having this much black money.  That is of no use and on basis of that money you can't say that we are rich. So its better to accept the fact that Indian is poor country.

As INDIA is a poor country as the minimum needs of common man also not getting.  Yes, we need to re-look into those things which can give minimum needs to the people and not the people who is having enough money to survive themselves. Govt needs to take more steps to reach the people who are below poverty line and make sure them in providing the needs to survive themselves which in turn gives better nation with rich country..

Sorry, Puneet,

Your $1,456 BILLION is not with the 70% of the population, which is still under below poverty line (BPL).  Till everyone of the population is brought to above poverty line, India cannot be called a rich nation.

The problem with India is that the bulk of the wealth is locked up with the few privileged  section, while the majority are still staving of the basic needs.

India is not the poor country. It is some big bang peoples of india who save their money in foreign banks and in india inside their walls and floors. which makes india's 40 percent of people poor. they are just filling their pocket. if corruption at high level would stop. india would be the richest country in the world in one day. if the money will be back it can make very good effect on the indian economy because if you have resource you have to surely use it for anything. you have to circulate that money in the market the economy will grow rapidly. if they will not do that what they will do. again they will put the money in banks. I dont think so......

Over all India is not a poor country. Deffinately there are lots of poor people in India but the ratio between poor and rich/middle class is small. India has people with highly rich class. There is enormous black money with the Industrialist and ploiticians which is not accounted. If this is got back in the account India will be filthy rich country. Also not every poor is not really poor, its the way people spend which makes them poor or rich. There are a lot of people who have enough money but still they do not spend either because they do not want to spend or dont know how to spend, or getting 8 to 10 % bank returns and becoming rich.

Off course India is not at all a poor country. There is a huge national minaral and petrolium reserve in India once these fields are 100% operational we will be in a position to overtake many countries in terms of earnings per person.

Yes I agree with swapna as of now the money is rotating in few hands hence they are blocked money once all this monies come to the market see the difference it makes to every Indian.

India is populated well as u r much populated u are suppose to have both rich and poor people in it. Indias richest citizens should help in the development of the country then we can convert India to a country of rich side rather than leaving it in the middle of rich and poor which is happening now thats it I am an INDIAN

Can we bring back our money?

It is one of the biggest loots witnessed by mankind — the loot of the Aam Aadmi (common man) since 1947, by his brethren occupying public office. It has been orchestrated by politicians, bureaucrats and some businessmen.

The list is almost all-encompassing. No wonder, everyone in India loots with impunity and without any fear. What is even more depressing in that this ill-gotten wealth of ours has been stashed away abroad into secret bank accounts located in some of the world’s best known tax havens. And to tha extent the Indian economy has been stripped of its wealth. Ordinary Indians may not be exactly aware of how such secret accounts operate and what are the rules and regulations that go on to govern such tax havens. However, one may well be aware of ‘Swiss bank accounts,’ the shorthand for murky dealings, secrecy and of course pilferage from developing countries into rich developed ones.

In fact, some finance experts and economists believe tax havens to be a conspiracy of the western world against the poor countries. By allowing the proliferation of tax havens in the twentieth century, the western world explicitly encourages the movement of scarce capital from the developing countries to the rich. In March 2005, the Tax Justice Network (TJN) published a research finding demonstrating that $11.5 trillion of personal wealth was held offshore by rich individuals across the globe.

Thanks for the referral Ms.Swapna Das.

In case we calculate the whole unaccounted money kept in swiss bank by our Indians, India can pay off all the debts received from the world bank or from other sources. Under this context, we are not a poor country.

But on the otherhand, there is a vicious circle in India, that is the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer. This shows the concentration of economy in single hands.

India has never been poor since beginning. The richness of this country lies in accomodating others & making others rich in material, knowledge & spiritual matters. The only thing to be adjusted in the long run is correct the enequal distribution of wealth in order to have a balanced society.

india a poor country no

but damn sure majority of  we indians are

money never a problem for india we are developing at super sonic rate but half of us still sleep under bridges with newspaper as bedsheets/mattresses and handkerchief as blanket.

but then also india is not a poor country

have a look at this example for development

A guy talking on a mobile phone while taking a crap near the railway tracks

we have cell phones but no proper toilet facilty

Still i would say we are not a poor country

we have got free education now that's a bummer bcoz i have seen minors working at chai tuffrees at school time. just to feed themselves and their families. for such people a new born is not a mouth to feed, but a hand to work and earn for the family. everyone in the family works form a 5 year old to 65 year old and then also what do they eat ? (No prize for guessing the correct answer) they are undernourished

Thanks for the referral Mr. Vipin

I think the question asked here is very broad, the important thing is in what way are we measuring weather India is rich or poor?  I believe India is a rich country; we have a culture which is very rich. We have human resource, intelligence, minerals. Most important in India we still have love and respect for our elders, how can India and Indians be poor?

DISHONES INDUSTRIALISTS, scandalous politicians and corrupt IAS, IRS, IPS officers have deposited in foreign banks in their illegal personal accounts a sum of about $1500 billion, which have been misappropriated by them. This amount is about 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt. With this amount 45 crore poor people can get Rs 1,00,000 each. This huge amount has been appropriated from the people of India by exploiting and betraying them. Once this huge amount of black money and property comes back to India , the entire foreign debt can be repaid in 24 hours. After paying the entire foreign debt, we will have surplus amount, almost 12 times larger than the foreign debt. If this surplus amount is invested in earning interest, the amount of interest will be more than the annual budget of the Central government. So even if all the taxes are abolished, then also the Central government will be able to maintain the country very comfortably.

This is not a debate since there is no base for discussion. This seems more like a question.

For me absolutely not, India is not a poor country. Every country has some % of poverty and I am yet to hear of any corrupt free country.

Money in the Swiss Bank Account 1 to 5 , India sure is in.

IPL money- bountiful

Culture - very rich

Technology- India among the best

I would not be surprised if there are Indians who are capable of helping the USA solve the oil spill problem.

India is not at all a poor country by vertue of its high reserves of minarals, petrol the size and the GDP.

Yes I do agree that the income is not equal at all levels of the socity in general. We are the second fastest growing economy so under any circumstances we are not poor but our appearence put us in the light of poor people. This is changing and changin fast may be within a decade we will be totally different.

India is not a poor country rather a large portion of country is poor. Distribution of money is unimaginably different. We have few having in lakhs/crores arnd mass struggling to have food. One side you have a flat worth more than a crore, where on other side a slum where lakhs of people hiding and living measurable life. Puneet your information provides clear picture how money distribution is a problem for India. India is poor cause of its few own people.

India is certainly NOT a poor country. However, the flow chain of the money is all wrong, corrupt, lopsided and with a whole lot of wrong people, who unfortunately happen to drive the country and who choose to use that money in more interesting (to them) ways and NOT in the benefit of the country.

Hence the perception goes out that the country is poor.

Revelation of Swiss bank accounts

This is so shocking…. …If black money deposits was an Olympics event….India would have won a gold medal hands down. The second best Russia has 4 times lesser deposit. U.S. is not even there in the counting in top five! India has more money in Swiss banks than all the other countries combined!

Recently, due to international pressure, the Swiss government agreed to disclose the names of the account holders only if the respective governments formally asked for it Indian government is not asking for the details….. ..no marks for guessing why?

We need to start a movement to pressurise the government to do so! This is perhaps the only way, and a golden opportunity, to expose the high and mighty and weed out corruption!

Please read on……and forward to all the honest Indians to…..like somebody is forwarding to you…….and build a ground-swell of support for action!

Is India poor, who says? Ask the Swiss banks. With personal account deposit bank of $1,500 billion in foreign reserve which have been misappropriated, an amount 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt, one needs to rethink if India is a poor country?

Black money in Swiss banks — Swiss Banking Association report, 2006 details bank deposits in the territory of Switzerland by nationals of following countries:

TOP FIVE

INDIA
$1,456 BILLION

RUSSIA
$470 BILLION

U.K.
$390 BILLION

UKRAINE
$100 BILLION

CHINA
$96 BILLION

Now do the math’s - India with $1,456 billion or $1.4 trillion has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world combined. Public loot since 1947:
