The world is in fear hearing news that a new superbug from India could spread around the world because of medical tourism and scientists say there are almost no drugs to treat it. Researchers said on Wednesday they had found a new gene called New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, or NDM-1, in patients in South Asia and in Britain.
US health officials said on Wednesday there had been three cases so far in the United States – all from patients who received recent medical care in India, a country where people often travel in search of affordable healthcare.
In this regard, Is India a safe destination for Medical tourism?
Of late, I think it is on 06 Aug 2010, An american Industrialist Mr. Renold Lemour, 65 years old, underwent a heart transplantation surgery successfully in Chennai. He had earlier a by-pass surgery .When he had some problem , approached Apollo Hospital Chennai. They diagonized him & performed transplantation of heart successfully.
This clearly highlights the height we reached in the medical profession. Some of the facility we have, are on par with developed countries. Moreover, it is cost effective to many a nations to all over the world. Getting an excellent service at cost effective mode may harp the developed nations. So this kind of cold war to tarnish & sidetrack the patients. Else, you will find most of US citizen start knocking the doors here.
India attained suffiently good height in medicine. It is all we need to grow more.
I had my doubts even earlier like India becoming a preferred destination for Medical tourism, agreed that affordable healthcare is provided but the quality of standards in India is very low I mean cleanliness is not maintained, and if some one goes for hospitals one contracts a secondary infection from these hospitals, thats given the chance for superbug which is threatening people all over the world, and with no treatment for this it will give all the wrong signals for medical tourism in India, and I believe we are not that a safe destination for
India is benefiting in a big way from globalization. It has become the latest hub for medical outsourcing, with patients from all over the world flocking to myriad hospitals for treatment. They are the new medical tourists and India is flaunted as a medical tourism destination. As per a Mc Kinsey study India’s medical tourism industry can be worth a whopping $2.2 billion annually in terms of revenue. It was only a question of time before India harnessed its vast pool of skilled doctors and nurses along with access to the most modern medical technology, at par with the best in the world. Moreover India enjoys the advantage of a skilled medical workforce fluent in English. All medical procedures including hospitalization and recovery costs much less as compared to America and Europe. Indian hospitals adhere to global quality standards for treatment and surgery.
A dental implant will cost at least 75% less in India as compared to the US. An MRI will cost about $60 in India and about $700 in the US. An open-heart surgery will cost just $4500 in India as compared to $18000 in the US. Crano-facial surgery or a hip replacement costs about $4300 in an Indian hospital while it may cost upwards of $13000 in America. A kidney transplant can cost just 500 euros while it may cost you about 8500 euros in Britain.
definitely India is a safe destination..many Indian hospitals are recognized by many internationally acclaimed accreditation socities.Indian hospitals are following the standards which are safe for the people.
I adree with Ayan ,the quality ? still remains in India.Cost lowering at the cost of quality sure would not boost medical tourism .The recent NDM-1 superbug controversy is a blow to it. By

WITHOUT ANY DOUBT INDIA SHOULD BE ONE OF THE BEST MEDICAL DESTINATIONS,AT A COMPARATIVELY LOWER EXPENSE LEVEL WITH SO MANY CORPORATE AND PRIVATE HOSPITALS WITH VARIOUS LATEST EQUIPMENTS,QUALIFIED,EXPERIENCED,DEVOTED,DEDICATE DOCTORS AND PARAMEDICAL STAFF ACROSS THE LENGTH AND BREADTH OF OUR COUNTRY.
At present, patients from many developed countries are visiting India for best treatments because it is dependable and safe. By

India has been the preferred destination for medical services. I dont have any doubts about the quality of treatment. I do agree that most of the hospitals even the best hospitals are failing high standards of hygiene. The characteristics of the alleged bug spreading from India and the threats from are not yet spelled. It may be negative propoganda against India. We can not come to conclusion as yet unless the total details of alleged bug is spelled.
India continues to be the best medical tourism destination..will have to wait and watch for the New delhi infection stuff.the picture is still not clear..may not affect much of business for medical treatments By

In my opinion India is safe destination for good medical treatment. Of course it may little bit costlier for the system adopted with sophisticated & modern medical technology.
Hallo Ayan. Of course Our country is safe destination for medical and other sector also. Problem is their everywhere. People should not worry about these issues. Also i disagree to ban visitor for any reason. This is reference to U.S ban to their citizens to visit India. Further we should improve the facility and hospitality so that the visitor will remember always his stay in our country.
Sorry, Ayan,Though i am no medical expert, but most of the medical fraternity will agree that elective procedures like, cosmetic surgery has a porosity of breeding bacteria which may initially tend to develop strong resistant to antibiotics. The only remedy is defer such treatment and concentrate on developing antidote.
India became a favorable medical destination due to cost factor coupled with decent medical facilities, which is still a case. I don't think the prime attraction [affoardablity] has changed and it can & it had & it will only improve over a period of time, so I don't foresee a long term impact on India as a choice for medical destination.
wrt the current super bug, its like this:- when H1N1 (didn't have a cure at that time) out braked in the USA, people who had vested interests were still going, though taking precautions, so we can at max say that temporarily people were cautious but things did settle down after that. Then pharmaceutical companies got drugs/vaccinations in market and it was these steps that got things back on track.
So if at all their is a new virus/super bug that has spurred up, then lets work on a solution to develop medicines etc and get this thing sorted out rather than abandoning a affordable & available destination.
INDIA IS THE BEST MEDICAL TOURISM DESTINATION -- COMPARE A CARDIAC BYPASS COSTS IN INDIA AVG 3.30 LACS V/S IN EUROPE 18 LACS IN US 24 LACS. THE STATISTICS SHOW THE POST OPERATIVE INFECTION RATE IN INDIAN HOSPITALS IF FAR LESS THAN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN HOSPITALS. TODAY MANY OF OUR HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS ARE WORLD CLASS WITH STATE OF ART EQUIPMENTS AND INSTRUMENTS. OUR DOCTORS ARE OPERATING PATIENTS ALL OVER THE WORLD TODAY AND A FORCE TO RECKON. NO WONDER PATIENTS FROM EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST, EAST BLOCK COUNTRIES AND EVEN AMERICA ARE COMING TO INDIA ON MEDICAL TOURISM. ONLY ONE AREA OF IMPROVEMENT -- WE NEED TO SELL AND MARKET MEDICAL TOURISM MORE VIGOROUSLY. By

A densly populated country breeds its own problems in medical matters. We are not like US where less than 30% of the land surface is used by the people. Given the density of population the rapid spread of infections is almost a fact of life.
The recent attack on india / bangla / pakistan by some doctors saying that a particular form of disease has come to spread due to medical tourism is at once unjust and needlessly damaging. A number of recently identified virus are country specific and owe their "first" identified case to some geographic location or the other. The attitude should be to provide the antidote or vaccine to eradicate such things and not play politics just because the mega rich doctors in the west are unable to add to their rich haul as some patients are opting for cost effective cures available else where.
Regardless of what anyone can say, we are bale to provide cost effective critical care and support for most of the life threatening ailments particularly cardiac problems.
At best he claim of the super bug while definitely true and valid has been badly handled and stinks of sour grapes.
So i would say that medical tourism ( i object to the word tourism!) ....or better called medical travel is here to say and India is providing a very useful service in that area.
India is a preferred destination for medical tourism. Its less expensive than other western countries and equally qualified doctors attend to the patients. The treatments given to patients range from allopathy to naturopathy, which is not present in any other country the world over.
More and more people from across the globe are flocking to India to get treated.
I partly agree with you since all these patients who they have received treatment are from those hospitals which are clean and question of catching infection is very less.
See if everybody comes to India what will happen to British and Usa Medical institutes hence this matter is to be resolved and a logical conclusion to be found and at that point of time I will agree with you in full.
Why!! Test cricket is the best form of cricket and that tests the real power of a player. We should not get lost in glamor and forget the roots should we??
BJP too is forcing him to resign but he is seeking legal options to stay in. No one wants him, everyone knows how corrupt he is still he is not willing to leave! what should this attitude be called? Do you think he will resign at will ?
