Jacob, you are only referring to the Modern Republic of India, But that's not the only India...Please also consider the Indian Civilisation here... The history of India begins with evidence of human activity of Homo sapiens as long as 75,000 years ago, or with earlier hominids including Homo erectus from about 500,000 years ago. The Indus Valley Civilization, which spread and flourished in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent from c. 3300 to 1300 BCE, was the first major civilization in India.... India has never been a poor country, the funds and resources are unevenly distributed. We also tend to hoard our funds rather than investing, which thankfully is changing now.

Why is India a poor country? Answer is below... India as we all know has historically been "THE richest" region/country in the world throughout the recorded history up untill the British took over the subcontinent and we have seen a constant decline ever since with the exception of the last couple of decades when things have started turning around.. An average Indian lived a very lavish life as per the world standards in any era you can think of.. so what on earth happened that we became so poor that we could hardly feed our population? What went wrong? The british killed our industries in a systematic ways and only developed the infrastructure that helped them keep this nation under their rule.. The industrial revolution couldnt have come at a worse time At a time when we were declining like hell the another aspect which not many people talk about is the fact that we were a silver based economy back then and silver prices were declining by the day where as USA and UK and a few other European economies shifted to gold for backing their currency and Gold as we all know went up and up because as opposed to Gold the cost of production has not changed much and unlike silver there has not been many new discoveries. I dont know about others but I blame the Nehru/Gandhi family for India being pushed to the wall by 1990's... At a time when other Asian economies like Japan and South Korea were growing at 10% + per year we were doing a 2.5%-3% a year.. thanks to the socialist chacha Nehru... and those who followed his foot steps. Widespread corruption in todays India is another hurdle we have to jump across if we want to see our country get rid of the "poor" tag. Unplanned cities is what frustrates me the most apart from corruption.. What is wrong with the government of India? Why cant they plan new cities instead of letting every one have a free hand at doing whatever they want to.. I still see agricultural land around Delhi being cut into small plots and construction going on all over the place.. When will India get back its lost glory it always had? I hope to see that day in my own life time when people in USA and western Europe will be queuing up in front of Indian embassies in their respective countries to try their luck with an employment visa for India.

India had never been a poor country in any aspect whether its economy, culture, intellect, spirituality, young population etc. But the resources have not been in good hands who should have utilised it in a manner where we could become the No. 1 in the universe. Our talent is outsourced, people get inspiration from our culture & history but still we are a developing country. we face threat from countries like China who got independence later than us.

The word India came into existence only around 1947. Before that India was a bunch of kingdoms and princely states that constantly fought with each other. There are no impartial/authentic history of the past, most historians were paid by kings and hence showered heaps of flattery and goodness of that king's rule. Most of the money of every kingdom in India was spent on war, army and king - subjects just starved. This was the case even before the advent of mughals and the british. Brothers just back-stabbed their own brothers. So, honestly India has always been a poor country because Indians never wanted their country to be rich.

Your Question for debate is Is India ever a poor country ? Then Answer me the following:- During second world belligerency two ship load of food grains were despatched to India heading for Orissa and other states in eastern area including West bengal. The then PM the stupid Winston Churchil ordered the ship to return saying " India is just a Geographical name and they are brreing like Rabbits" if there was no food shortage and the country was not poor ? You now compare India with other nations.. we are still in the developing stages the wealth amassed by people are in SWISS bank still the average citizen (65 %) of India population Earning/living under 1 USD per day

INDIA IS NOT A POOR COUNTRY AND IT WILL NOT B TO. SOME KEY ECONOMIC ISSUES LIKE CENTRAL PROBLEM OF AN ECONOMY CONSISTS OF WHAT TO PRODUCE AND WHAT IN QUANTITIES , HOW ARE THESE GOODS PRODUCED AND TO WHOM TO PRODUCE ARE TO B ADDRESSED PROPERLY. AND MORE OVER THE MICRO AND MACRO ECONOMICS SHOULD B GIVEN A THRUST COUPLED WITH A CLEAR BIG PUSH THEORY. WITH RESOURCES IN ABUNDANCE THE NEED OF THE HOUR IS PROPER EXPLOITATION OF THE SAME WITH WELL DEFINED POLICIES. AFTER ALL WE ARE THE WELFARE STATE.

India has been been a poor country and will never be a poor country. It is only the uneven distribution of wealth that is triggering such kind of debates. And, it is our responsibility as citizens to ensure that such distribution is made even by fighting corruption and increasing job opportunities.

Historically,we have been a rich nation, the reason invaders came from all over was because we were rich,in fact, our share in world economy was pretty high,we started becoming poor due to colonization. The process milked our country of our resources and reduced us to be intellectually, economically poor, now slowly the regeneration process has started and in a few decades from now,we will once again attain the commanding heights reached in the 10th century to 17th century.

What is definition of poor? Govt's definition is - a person requires Rs9/day for survival. And if this is the case, India is never poor, coz even a business of begging will be making more than that in a day.

India has been very rich both in resources and tradition. Our richness has been plundered, initially by Mughals who ruled majority of our territories, and later British. Since majority of our resources are disparate and scattered, unitary effort to link these resources for common purpose is what is lacking! Our politicians have so long been playing vote-bank politics and had scant regard to uniting our perennial rivers, dis-allow exploitation of mineral resources. Our sand, enriched with silica and radio-active elements, were unmindfully exploited. Mining rights were given to select industrialists who had all along been exploiting these resources. What we lack is "Nationalisim" and "Patriotism"! If our rulers have in them even 50% of Patriotism, this land will become a reservoir of scientific inventions, knowledge, wisdom!
