In the last few months, we have seen a sharp surge in worker protests in plants across the country including some violent actions too. The sporadic work stoppages and protests by BPO workers, store level protests by Retail workers, the on-line protests by young engineers not hired as per promise and the recent protests by some of the airline employees are all symptoms of a looming Employee Relations crisis.

This evidence suggest that this Employee Relations climate is at risk. Is this something we should be concerned about? Should there be concerted efforts to understand these changes better and do something about it?

Kirti, I am a very small retailer with a few employees in my shops.

But, what I have observed, especially during last couple of months that cost of living in particular, food prices are shooting up like anything which is disturbing people at the very bottom of the pyramid.

I have also posted an article over the issue a few days back here.

Also even for the medium class citizens, the burgeoning prices for real estate, fuel, rentals, education, medical etc are definitely not sounding sweet.

Pressures like recession, tough competition, job insecurity, EMI's & performance just making it more salty.

Then again market is enticing us every day with a new product or two, in this material world & what we call the rat race.

The overall impact of this doesn't only reflects in professional working but in personal life as well I suppose.

The issue of employee relations is of complex nature. As noted leadership expert Stephen Covey rightly points out, it is a question of right leadership. Wherever there is right leadership, the level of employee satisfaction is very high and attrition is minimal.

Reducing profits and increasing pressures on senior management to perform better in most cases finds transfered through enhanced pressure on levels below. Rather than enhancing operating efficiencies and innovative tools whence retrenchment and reduction of benefits is effected on lowest levels instead of starting with self discipline from top, such reactions can be expected.

The need is for managements to enhance their own capabilities and capacities while having a caring attitude with their junior members. The handling howsoever unique to India which may not be expected in many other economies requires be practiced here. One of the basic reasons being the accelerated growths seen and felt by all yet shared by a select few.

Earlier when the economy was going strong the impact of these changes were not evident but as the pace of growth has reduced, these risks are becoming more visible.

It would be interesting to see what do you say on this issue.....

Its all about failure of govt. policies that leads to a low level of competition between organizations, becoz of that they create immense pressure on their employees to make their org. more profitable. And these organizations can't afford to take any bold step against govt. to change its policy in any way. These organizations employers can do is to reduce their employees salary or can reduce their no. Its all about failure of govt. & these org. not of employees. So what we have to do is to take strong action against political leaders who r working for their party & their fund providing organizations not for the people.
