By this question I mean really 100% honesty. When we want a leave the most common reason we give is "I am sick , I can't come." Is this attitude right? Not talking just about morals but in case we tell the truth that "I am not feeling good enough to come to the office" Does that create a wrong impression?By this question I mean really 100% honesty. Sometimes we give lame reasons for not completing work on time. Are such lame reasons acceptable? If not than what kind of impression co we create when we say such almost baseless things!! The question is simple: Is it really fruitful to be 100% honest at work?

If it was ok to say "I can't come because I am not feeling like coming" why would people say "I am not well so I won't be coming". Perhaps its some psychology which has become a trend that we rarely tell truth at work space about almost of anything. But repeating this over and over can be a bad decision because it might create a negative image which may prove problematic at times of hikes and promotions.

HONEST SPEAKING SOMETIMES HAS AN ADVERSE AFFECT, IF IN CASE AN EMPLOYEE KEEPS ON AVAILING LEAVE FOR THE SAME REASON SUCH AS "I AM NOT FEELING WELL", I THINK IT MAY AFFECT ADVERSELY ON HIS/HER CAREER WHEN IT COMES TO PROMOTION.  CHANCES OF GETTING PROMOTION MAY LIKELY TO DIMINISH FOR SUCH EMPLOYEE.  IT'S BETTER ALWAYS MENTION SOME STRONG REASON WHILE AVAILING LEAVE, SO THAT AN EMPLOYEE AND MANAGER WILL ALWAYS BE AT GOOD TERMS AS LONG AS HE/SHE WORKS.

Honest is fruitful but to know where it is fruitful.when in work with diff peoples with their diff attitudes.sometimes coordination may be r maynot be collapsed so at that time no one recognized our honesty. In my view honesty is fruitful in our life but in workplace tactics is the 100% fruitful.so everybody should know the tactics.

I agree this side views and thanks for the referral Ms.Gargi Sinha. Being honest is good but sometimes it is not practically possible. Achieving 100 percent is not possible If anyone says, I am 100 percent honest which means he is cheating himself and others. One has to see the reality side and gravitation of the situations.

It largely depends on your manager. If you have a rapport with your manager then I think rather than giving lame excuses you should say that due to personal reason I will not be able to come provided if you are not left with any high priority task and you are the owner of that task.At the initial stage of the career many people think that lying is the only one option but as you will go up in hierarchy you will start feeling that you should avoid lying and be honest and professional towards your work.

"Work is worship " & " Do your duties & look for your previlages". These phrases can be considered at workplaces. An employee asking a leave, may be his prerogative at times and may be, a dire necessity at different times. One need not explain it to everybody, it is personal life. Company does not have rights to poke the nose in it. However, for granting leave , the company can use it's rules , regulations etc or at times the rapport with his circle because of his good wishes. In the eagle eye view, company needs to look after an employee without sacrificying the job. It is more important for his bosses.

Taking a leave when one realy is sick cannot be considered lack of motivation. Otherwise it is lack of motivation and team norms that lead to such tardy and sloth behavior. If the work environment is creative and has scope of gaining for useful work then the employee gets motivated to work without tardines and sloth. Otherwise absence of managerial norms makes such situations a possibility.

Honesty always pays. It is not harmful to speak like Judhistir, that I am sick and doing some thing else.

I am of the opinion that every body is working for him or her so becoming negative, the whole world will become negative for that person in thought process. Similarly positiveness has 180 degree opposite.

So why lie?

According to me employees should be honest at work place to get good result but for this Management must have generosity to understand the employees at work place. Automatically honesty will be given a room for action.

I totally agree with it as it displays our professionalism and standard, but i don't think that anyone is 100% honest because sometimes we have to act as situation demands and that is not dishonesty. In fact it shows how you take decisions without being dishonest.

Baed on my experience I suggest to be professional at work place. Once we start working at a particular place, with in a period of time we get to know the psychology and attitude of the people around us and need to act accordingly to the situations. If some times, we really dont feel like working, just say Due to personal reasons I cannot work for the day and be sincere to complete the high priority work through back up/colleagues and we need not disclose our reasons for not going. If the manager stresses, just escape from letting him/her know. Honesty of the employees depends more on the manager. If people give lame reasons and escape from work, manager has to deal with the same. Id depends on his or her ability to manage them.

The same distinction can't be made for every set of employees. This kind of excuse augur well for those who finishes work on time, well disciplined, and those who possess upright positive attitude towards work all the time - not to be construed as workaholic! Those who do not fall under the above category, if they spell out the truth, it is obvious, the management would not view it positively.

Mostly it depend on employee that how he is telling true and wrong. In this time, mostly this reasons are common and employer understand easy. The time of honesty is decreasing day by day..It will show automatically that employee telling genuinely or lie..

I support your views, Gargi.

But employees often not willing to tell the truth as they want to keep their

personal life away from their employer.

& in another case suppose, anyone tells the truth, then many times it's

immediate superior want to know every detail, for ex : why, when, where, with

whom, what etc........

So nowadays it becomes general tendency of most of the employees, to

hide the exact reason of their holiday or their future plans.

diplomacy is not a synonym of being dishonest. being honest to your self will not lend u in any trouble , what so ever. You can reach on top with good and clean image, u dont need to be liar and back stabber to reach on top . Life comes in BINARY, Honest or not , black or white, faithful or cheat,

I go for the latter because truth does have a way of catching up and when it does, the whole effort at lying doesnt seem worth it.To explain my point further on a global perspective, just see the examples of numerous ministers who have been forced to bite the dust because of their past catchig up everntually. In todays world it lying especially in corporate circles to enhance your own career has indeed become the norm but tell me honestly do these people get a good nights sleep ? No way Like Stephen says above one needs to be honest with oneself. And case you dont have an appreciative boss or company that values your honesty there is no better thing than to resign rather than lose your personal integrity in your own eyes and your loved ones. Remember just like how small drops make a might ocean, so to do small lies or lies once in a way create a mammoth scandal which eventually ruin you. So being honest is a better option than not being !

Bottom line - be honest with yourself. Get to work even if you don't feel like - then you know your responsible and not frivilous. Say that your sick when sick or what ever the circumstance, speak truthfully - no one ruffles your hair then. Can one have glitches in one's integrity? If one chooses to be honest selectively, when do others know when to trust the person? Might sound idealistic but even when one goofs up and speaks the truth, the bosses can't turn a blind eye to the radiance of truth.

When it comes to performance, if not able to perform under pressure explain to your immediate reporting head then work towards improvement. Sincere people honestly work on their areas requiring improvement. It always repays more than expected.

Be honest even with a lousy boss, just don't repeat mistakes and turn in another excuse for a repeat mistake. Your dignity is high when your truthful. It just works!! Always!!

There may be momentary inconveniences/misgivings but you will get over that as well. It always works for me.

Hey Gargi, I strongly agree with your comments, but I think sometimes seniors do not allow their juniors on any random reasons. Illness is the only reason which anyone can use and no one can question you for 1 or 2 days leaves. I know this is against ethics, but management should understand the criticality of employees personal life. Management should not be so strict towards employee for doing work. No one can give his/her 100% towards quality under pressure. Management should ask for output not for the time employee spending in company on his desk. Some people can complete a piece of work in 1 hour and some might take more. Expectations should be accordingly.

Gargi: I use to read your comments and views on different debates and articles, etc. I found all of them so interesting and useful for many of use.
