As the manufacturing industry becomes increasingly competitive, manufacturers need to implement sophisticated technology to improve productivity. Artificial intelligence, or AI, can be applied to a variety of systems in manufacturing.

It can recognize patterns, plus perform time consuming and mentally challenging or humanly impossible tasks. In manufacturing, it is often applied in the area of constraint based production scheduling and closed loop processing.

So, is it possible for manufacturing to go fully automated??

I agree with Mohammad, though Manufacturing is Human intensive still it depends on the products you manufacture.

Absolutely, if we exclude designing, management functions.. Progress in robotics and software makes this possible. Supercomputers like IBM watson will allow to run such powerful applications which will negate need for supervisory control during manufacturing processes. Also concept robots are being developed which can emulate almost every repetitive task. These are 1. Motoman from japan, 2.Pi4 Workerbot from germany and 3. Heartland robotics from US. Just google them and see their capabilities.

I wouldn’t say completely but to some extent a very high percentage of it can be fully automated. Humans are still needed in many aspects of business and manufacturing.

NO, manufacturing can never go fully automated. Humans are required in each aspect of the process. Machines don't have reasoning power & can't decide on many instances. They will execute the work as per the data collected irrespective of the current situation. This can be a great risk which manufacturer might take in near future.
