We are working on India Development Gatewaya Project, under that we have developed a multilingual portal (English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu) and providing information on Agriculture, Health, Primary Education, e-Governance and Social Awareness.

Here problem is that our initiative is web based but our target audience have not the access of internet services. Even in urban area where internet penetration is very high, still people are not landing on our website. So, what should be the ways to promote our website without advertising in newspaper or TV channel. Finally, whether it is possible to reach at our target audience with advertising it?

I think, services like Website need not require loads of Publicity. If you have good concept, it will surely work unlike IBIBO.

Can you promote use of automobiles in an area where there are no roads or fuel stations? In this case the delivery of promotion thru a website itself is a wrong medium chosen! Now before you start searching for roads to reach rural audience, find media accessible to them and identify a vehicle compatible with those media. A loftier approach should be to enable internet penetration in rural areas, with whatever resource available to you (e.g community internet kiosks thru VSAT/POTS/Mobile connectivity)!

When you customers do not have internet access and you crate a website for them, that might be a 'little' problem.

That said, the issue here is mainly if you need advertisement to get visitors to your websites.

The thing is that if you look to Internet marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and other methods are called more accurately Passive Internet Marketing. Web 2.0 is Active Internet marketing.

That means as follows:

  1. Get a good working, attractive website with full abilities that visitors can interact with each other and the site owners; take also care that the site owners are visible and very active.
  2. Go to the social networking sites and announce your site and start making 'conversations' on those sites, so that people will get curious (people who are interested in the subjects of your site)
  3. Take care that you write good articles about your website and publish those also in the social networking sites
  4. Go to forum and talk about interesting (funny, informative, angry, unique) things and refer indirectly to your site (otherwise it is advertisement)

When you do all the above things and traffic comes in, monitor the traffic in detail. Who is coming in, are they leaving immediately, which pages are popular and which pages are not, react instantly and make changes to the site. Ask people their opinion about the site to get ideas and show people that you care.

Your approach of your site must be for the visitors, not for your own ego. Make it a community site.

That is what I do and after the forum went up, within hours I had traffic and after some fine-tuning, the site has now more then 4,000 page views (after two days on the air). And I did the above things, I did not even SEO. When the search engines saw my entries in twitter, delicious, Stumble and more, they came massively and started to index the site.

in this rocket age of online marketing, u need to know only one thing to promote your site....

Target Audience.

Then you can simply float url in the concentrated groups on various social networking sites...

it has worked wonders.. it will .. all the time.

U feed the audience with all they want to see... they will promote it.

Yes, a website can be made popular without any advertisement provided the website should talk trusted and good information. I visited the site which was mentioned above, it consisting only primitive information. No specific information is provided in the web site. For some information, links are provided. Instead of the putting a plain links to some other website. Try to get the information and show it in your website and for the reference you can provide the link.

Though there are many a forms of advertising, website is surely one such platform that can be popularised without use of any form of advertising. Strong content and worthy reading / referring material with some push at inter-personal level would make a mark. Time would be the only element one has to be prepared for in such a case.

Good refer it is Kashif, but just a point to mention. IBIBO had undertaken a radio blitz and print campaign, though not too worthy to write about, but still had spent some moolah on being where it is this day.

Hi prasad good debate. Yes it is possible to promote a website with out advertising. One of the powerful ways is thorough word of mouth. Many popular web sites today have not used any advertisement to attract the people. It is it purpose and importances which made people to use it. It your site is really an informative one then you don't have to do advertise.

Thanks......

You know, I tried to visit the site and it is very slow. And at the end when I finally managed the to access the site, I saw that there were some problems with the site itself (not much, small things, but still it irritates). You must fix those issues first before you go public.

That is one.

If you look to heavy specialized site www.plr-ltd.com) - not the same type of a site as yours - but very specific and specialized, it is possible to get that site becoming popular for a particular type of public. When I started applying SEO, nothing happens, not one more hit then usual. When I started to submit the site - in the form of stories and articles, the traffic started to stream in by hundreds a day. 10% of the traffic came back repeatedly and 5 new customers came out of that action.

What you do is as follows:

  1. Get FireFox
  2. Install add-ins in FireFox (SEO and Social networking add-ins)
  3. Go to your site and submit each page in all social networking sites you can find
  4. Look carefully at the page counters and website statistics and you will be surprised.
  5. When you do that work with two or three people with separated computers and IP addresses, your traffic will go up to at least 80-100 concurrent users (users online on your site at the same time).
  6. The issue is then that after a day submitting, the traffic will drop, but if thee are interested people between the wave, they will keep coming back

If nobody comes back, then you have a problem with your site or the content is not what the visitors expected.

well it seems you r correct there, but not to forget that everything to sustain and grow, require a kick start, for a thing to suceed it must have a backup, and in case of websites too,it will require advertising, otherwise people will take much time to understand whts new in the web.thankyou

Agriculture, Health, Primary Education, e-Governance and Social Awareness.

These topics are not quite popular in terms of search on the net, unless people arouse interest in themselves through projects & education. Many people won’t agree with this, but it’s a fact.

You have to advertise your brand as per your target audience behaviour (surfing).  Simply URL won’t work as the advertisement.

Viz. tie ups with the different brands to get some space in their website.

Your Information’s (Promotion) = Company’s CSR

E-Governance & Social Awareness (CSR) – Toostep, LinkedIn

Agriculture –many sites related to Different types of agriculture, organic farming (NABARD)

Primary Education - Ngo’s or SONY Entertainment

Health – Hospitals or Insurance.

Others that will help you: -

Mobile Marketing will help you to pass with flying colours.

And make tie up with the local colleges & their festivals to promote your work.

Although it will be for a short period but atleast you will be getting recognized.

Be it twitter, FB, LI or SEO all are ways to advertise. Merely WoM (word of mouth) will not spread the news fast and wide.
