indian hospitals have departments on the basis of what is availaible in any other commercial establishment.

Even departments like HRD & IT are run like any other commercial establishment.

do you think indian hospital deserves only such short sighted administrative set up.

If you are talking about a large hospital - say about 250+ beds, it only makes logical sense in having separate departments with educated, trained heads who can manage the business of their respective departments with an annual operating plan and an allocated budget. It will also help you in understanding the contribution of each department to the bottom-line in due course of time. Implying, you can improve the quality of care and services delivery in a better, controlled manner.

However, most hospitals in India have far fewer beds and are owned by a doctor or group pf doctors. These units will at most require one or two administrative managers to look after most non-medical (admin and support services) functions.

Well I don't think the hospital departments should be segregated...If they are isolated from the main body they might be beneficial for few patients but what about those patients who need to undergo some kind of surgery which involves all kinds of department to come together ???

Zahid and Prem, well both of you have rightly pointed the criteria and short comings in our system. But basic point is whether to segregate departments. I understand by segregation is identifying departments as entities though they function under one roof. And i believe it is the best way to have good understanding of the functioning of individual departments and measuring its performance in terms of revenue, cost containment, service, etc. and helps in greater understanding of processes for better clinical and financial to attain greater customer satisfaction in long run. I would like to add here that not only clinical epartments but also support service departments can be included in its perview.

i definetly do not agree with the administrative set up absorbed by the indian hospitals.

If we can have a deeper insight most of the leading hospitals in india have managers who have not studied ABC of healthcare & thus they centralise all functions with what is availaible anywhere.

I hope we should have a system which is more patient friendly & dedicated to healthcare.
