Yes, the time has come now when we shall think of privatizing railway. Firstly till we will not privatize it our Government does not have the money to improve the infrastructure to a level where by all commuters can get seat in Railways. You can see the condition if you want to travel to Bombay in a week,s time and unfortunatly if that is summer season you will not get ticket in any case or you should pay hefty bribe to someone, look at the condition of general class in any train it,s just pathetic, accidents are increasing, its more dangerous than traveling by air, tracks are old, they can not support even a train running at 120 in this age of bullet trains, so why not to open it up and end the monopoly of Indian Railway, It will be become another BSNL/MTNL, or Air India once privatized.

Very much. We are far behind other developed countries with respect to railways. Even China has good railways like Metros, Magnetic trains which moves very fast. Yes, may the the prices would go up but it help a lot of middle class to travel faster and relay on Buses and Cars for overnight travel to nearby cities. Big companies like Relience, Essar, etc.

Privatising the Indian Railways..would definitely bring in lot of change - would have standard Operating Systems,Infrastructure and of course decision making.. and training. Railway's employed personnel need lot of upgradation in skill set to handle the current demand to meet the technolgy growth and this would not be possible by the Government, who is manned by unprofessionals..

Privatisation of a PSU is for betterment of services. Some of the services like catering, maintenance of compartments, maintenance of Railway Stations etc. have already been privatised. However, the services are not improved instead they are deteriorated. Mismanagement will collapse the total system in vogue. Kingfisher Airlines is one such example. I believe it is not the time for privatising the Indian Railways.

I don't buy the argument for privatizing, since it is doing good but instead, in some areas where the contract is given to pvt parties, like internal maintenance for cleaning the express trains are given to pvt. cos., which don't care much, their work don't coincide with the standards. This is because, on a complaint there is a meagre penalty while if a railway employee don't work and a complaint against him/her comes, then he can be severely punished, which may effect his/her service. so a railway employee is more careful to work, then a pvt one.

"Privatisation" to the extent of converting it into a Corporation or PSU and removing it from the messy hands of Politicians - YES. Otherwise, there will be more harm if you disinvest Railways into 5-8 independant Corporations.

AS FAR AS TRAVEL INDUSTRY IS CONCERNED,PRIVATE OPERATORS OF AIRLINES OR BUS SERVICES,TAXI OPERATORS HAVE THEIR OWN SETS OF PROBLEMS.THEY ARE NOT 100% PERFECT.THINK OF THE MASSIVE SIZE OF RAILWAY OPERATIONS.ARE THERE COMPETENT PRIVATE PLAYERS TO SUCCESSFULLY RUN RAILWAYS THOUGH NOT NATIONALLY BUT ON REGIONAL LEVELS?

I am in total agreement with Sudip on the subject. Indian Railways employs 1.6 million people but the network which are in excess of 70000 km the Railway should remain with Government but the net work spread accross 3.33 lack sq km is really huge hence part of the service should be let out to private player in order to have better security and sefty of passengers.

I am not agree for privatization of Indian Railway. I can't understand why people are thinking for privatization.. ? Why we don't think to solve problem, we always complaining every thing.. If the govt. sector in not working properly or they have any problem's then we need to support them.. Some of govt. sector like telecommunication [BSNL ] is in loss and they have some problems after privatization like network consumption, no service, connection errors etc.

Before making the Indian Railways Privatisation, Goverment should take in to the account of previous Organisations' statistics how far they achieved the norms behind it. Alreay Station Cleaning and Catering have been adopted by way of privatisation. Due to lack of new appointments and filling of back logs Indian Post and Telegraphs has been suffering much more and almost neglected due to entry of private courriers and telcom companies. Main purpose of the organisation has been scrapped and selling NJ stamps and service duplicating to other Government Departments like Pass Port offices(recently adding). Naturally, Government should take inmates (raise job Opportunities)to meet the normal services rendering, to know its full gape of service requirement. Simply washing hands and counting the income doesnot give any purposeful services to the common man.

I do not think that the country is yet ready to hand over entire reailaway to private hands. Whatever said and done, private companies will not invest further in expanding railway in rural areas or care to provide service in non-profit routes. What can be done, is to bring in Privte particpation in areas where possible. A typical area is the security systems, like mentioned in my posting " A feasible technology based idea for security of railways". New rails, expansions, replacements, doublings and construction of buildings for stations and other infrastructure etc could be got done faster, if given out to private companies.
