In the Information technology, lots of programming language like c,c++,java,vb, etc but i think java play a major role in the software development.

Software development is very much depends on requirements,budget, company's infrastructure.

If someone want to develop an web application, they have a choice of many,

Ruby, Java/J2EE, MS.Net, PHP etc... 

As Java is an open source and backed up by the array of programmers in open source arena, it could be the language of choice.

But yes, that doesn't make others less relevant.

The pitfall is, you don't get exclusive support for most of the framework in java, but in .Net as it is a proprietary, it gives better support.
