In another protectionist measure primarily aimed at China, the US House of Representatives passed two different bills that mandate the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security to purchase only US-made goods.

After the ban on several outsourcing deals, and hike in the US visa fees, and several states banning outsourcing, and now comes this "Made in America" bill which mandates the US Congress and the department of homeland security to purchase things which are only Made in America.

Is "Made in America" bill a retrograde step??

This is a big time retrograde step, if at all then Why did US open up their markets (I mean the so called Globalization)? 1) Making their corporates sell products globally without any trouble 2) Make their citizens enjoy low cost services/goods 3) Ensure they get access to global talent and retain the top spot. Any protection would only hamper USA largely and other countries marginally.......But, this is a serious retrograde step....

If America feels imports of certain category of goods or services is hurting their industry, economy and employment they are fully justified in making changes in policy. American citizen interests are primely served is what ought matter to their government.

Course Correction in policy can not be termed retrograde.

Globalisation at the cost the cost of hurting own citizen interests is meaningless at best and it is high time our government learns a lesson from such actions.

Learning to drive is the only way if being driven is not to liking.

Thanks, Namrata.

Anything American is retrogade ! I am not surprised with this move. According to the americans, they are the only nation on earth. Others are insignificant.

Thanks,Namrata for referral.i agree with you it is an retrograde step.In degree of comparison, there are  two words defining the moment of energy and synergy. One of is "ZENITH". and the other is"ZEST". The USA is losing the former which is symptomatic of permitting inferiority complex. Why it is happening in the country of all the happenings?

America has been voicing about globalization to a greater extent, but what is doing now. Definitely it is not a good step taken by America. However, if America wants to give a boost to its economy, it's ok and no one can blame. But at the same time if it involves in playing double game in developmental growth relates other countries, it is going to be trapped in its own way.

Thanks Mr.Namrata.

I am in total agreement with you Namrata on the subject. say within a year or two they will regret their decisions to pass such bill since everything will become double the current price so the inflation will rise.

In long run it will effect their job market as well since the whole system is like a chain.

On account of the changing international market scenario, the US has gone in for various protectionist measures and the latest being the focus on procuring only US made goods by the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security.

This is primarily stemming from the basic sense of trying to protect the US market from foreign made goods which are depriving the local US companies from succeeding in the local US market and the sense of heightened insecurity that is beginning to creep into the US policy makers mind due to the growing clout of other countries like China, India, Brazil and Russia (BRIC)....

On the one hand, the US is quite strict in advising other countries including India not to focus on strict domestic protection policies so that the US companies are not affected and on the other hand the US government is focusing on increasing protectionist policies for their own benefit. As long as a quid pro quo policy is followed, it may benefit all the countries, but if individualist and isolationist policies are followed under the perceived notion that it could benefit the home country, then it is not a fair game that is being played.....

Protectionist policies have historically been implemented by various countries to improve their domestic markets but if it is one sided or biased, then the bill may be labeled as being perceived as a retrograde initiative that may invite counter protectionist measures from other countries which can possibly impose such measures where the US may also be affected......

Thanks for the referral, Namrata....

Globalisation is a two way process. Both get affected. Till date America was affecting largely on many nations' cultures and economies, now when the buck of change has come up on them, they decline to adhere. This is a very kiddish behavior. If US does this, it will lose the trust of most of the economies and the status will decline. They cant keep their economy away from the result of their own doings.

America has been the forebearer of the torch of globalisation and open economies. It was the first country to initiate stock market interferences in other nations decades back. The same globalisation is marring them of their own growth because of the less ompetent young generation. Now the Economies are wanting to open into their land, and they are not willing! odd and very retro...

The current status of affairs for the US govt. is to reinforce people confidence. Any move that indicates or reinforces the American Common man with the nations pride would be a welcome step. The outsource work that has been there for a couple of decades now, has helped many smaller countries in the east better their economy by manufacturing material for leading brands in the US. Scores of products are manufactured outside the US, that the common US citizen sports with the American Authenticity but actually the product is made at a captive unknown facility in a poor country. So the challenge, is whether the American industry would,at all, be able to make their products themselves, in the first place, or just brand it with the national pride but continue support to the poor countries, is to be seen.US can come up with better and stringent norms than showing withdrawal symptoms to the globalization call that it is known for a long time now. It is a retrospective step from a "developed country" back to a "developing country".

Also the outsource work that has been there for a couple of decades now, has helped many smaller countries in the east

It is like the satyagrah movement started by Gandhi during our freedom struggle. Except in this case, there is no freedom struggle for the US. Besides in the longer term, Gandhi's philosophy was to unite people for a single cause. The cause of giving up foreign made goods did not quite last though. I can say the same about the political steps US is taking today. It is just about uniting people for a cause, although I think they are well aware that they will not succeed

Definitely it is a retrograde step.

Unfortunately America which championed the cause of Globalization is backtracking fearing it will lose its status of superpower.

Rather than taking steps to improve its economy it is hindering the growth of BRIC Counties , especially India and China.First of all why a job lands in India or China or else where it is just bacause it value for money. The same work or job or article if can be produced or doen at a cheaper rate in America then why will they come.

It is in the interest of the America to allow competition everywhere. After all if America today is superpower it is because of it is open market.

Its more political than an economic one. At the end of the day we need to hunt for our own opportunities. We can be stuck with such bills. India I suppose should learn to say no on international forum and should be firm on what it want to be in the years to come. At the end of the day our GDP should be a sustainable ratio of the world GDP.

These are the Govt policy issues that get rises the patriotic feeling among the Americans. To bind a mass, there are so many cohesive forces available to a leader such as Language, Religion etc to unite them to tackle common issues. This is one such issue that Mr. Obama used.Remember , We also said, " Be Indian & buy Indians".

American brand does not mean that it is produced in US. There are items sourced & supplied as American brand in the third world(China, Taiwan,Singapore, India etc), is also included.
