Generally monopoly is viewed as person getting hold of market by implementing unfair means such as providing the service at much low cost than other service providers and causing the competitor to bear heavy financial loss. This result in removing opponent’s existence from market and the monopolist again raises his service price to recover the losses.

Good for whom .... ?

For the Co.  .. monopoly is GOOD. For consumers . BAD. There may not be second openion. What happens if monopoly may not be avoided ? Like electricity distribution in a particular locality / region ?

At the present internationally competitive market scenario, I feel monopoly is possible under certain conditions and that too temporarily.

For example, if a particular product is not available locally made - can only be imported - someone starts making this product, he/she will enjoy a localised monopolistic market for a brief period of time till other manufacturers catch up.

In some situation monopoly can actually be a complement. This is when your product is so good - in terms of quality and service - that buyer prefer the product exclusively. Then you have a near monopoly conditions. This is an earned monopoly and probably the best.

On the whole monopoly is not easy to achieve in the present day internationally competitive market space.....it is particularly impossible to achieve it in the long term.

Of the two ways outlined above, both are good.

Exactly, monopoly is always good for businesses as they can easily twist the policies and people have to follow as they have no other option in the market.

Its always bad as I consider for the reason being its unhealthy for both; consumers & sellers.

It may badly affect consumers due to price control by sellers. It also may not be good for marketers as due to that they might not pay attention to quality & product up gradations like we have witnessed when people in India drove four wheels only from two companies for years without any substantiate product improvements as comparison to present times where even successful models are subject to regular feature & technology advancements.

I believe that, in today’s modern jet age where everyone is being smart enough, there is healthy competition for all types of services and it’s very difficult to make monopoly. To become monopolist many things are done illegally and therefore should be prevented by laws. Most of the times government steps in to either regulate the monopoly, or forcibly break it up. There are some commodities for e.g. oil, gas etc whose availability and production is more in gulf countries. This monopoly is unfortunate and is difficult to be controlled since these resources are provided by nature.

To become monopolist in the market many things will be done illegally. This type of market has huge disadvantage since the prices of the products from monopolistic companies are uncontrollable.
