MBA is not important for managers in construction field. it's only the experience which is required to manage the projects.

MBA is not just about managing business. It encompasses the entire gamut of management skilss - finance, teams, resources, time, operations and finally stakeholder aspirations which is critical for the success of every project. Otherwise, we construction managers are taken for a ride by every other maanger because we do not know about their roles and the way they are suppossed to support us. COnstruction being the primary role, everythiing else is in support role, bur unfortunately we become secondary to everything else, especially finacne and HR. So wake up and learn about others so that you know who to hold accountable for things which go wrong for no fault of yours.

MBA is not necessarily required in construction field, but having an MBA would give you an additional punch in managing construction projects. Being a civi engineer you have the skill to do the work properly and efficiently...an Addl MBA would help you to mangage the entire show effectively.

Not only so; many of the construction managers even do not have any engineering degree. I have noticed that civil engineering profession is the only profession where lot of peoples from non-engineering background exist.Look at the mistries who are coming to your house for work, whether plumber, mason, carpenter or painter; they do not have even any trade skill, why to talk of engineer and MBAs for projects?

There is another side of the coin too.MBA degrees have stooped so low that the degree is not important but where you have passed from, is more relevent!

I respect your views,Anjaneyula.

But if you have proper site/field experience, then you will learn the basics of management at site only.

& for site management you have your ideas to deal with this labors/contractors/suppliers/internal customers like planning team etc & for this a person who is little weak in technicalities can gain a lot with it's field or on site experience.

Please think neutrally, then you may understand, but for this u have to be on field/site.

Construction Mangers/Project Managers are reqd in Construction to deal with a huge manpower, Planning, P&M, QA/QC, Safety, Materials & Store, Statutory norms and overall construction finance & accounts to achieve a good margin in a project. This is really a big subject and are not included in the course of the biz schools. Engineers on experience become Project Managers and are very succesful to end with good profitability.

MBA gives you much broader idea on how industry works. A engineer in a construction industry cannot perform or track the market as a MBA graduate does. He might be technically strong but when it comes to the managing part of it... a base management knowledge is required....  To see things in a different angle....

Correct me if I am wrong
