I guess, there is a growth in medical tourism. Indian medical tourism attracts foreign patients basically because:

1) The costs associated with treatment in India is around one-tenth the cost in their home country.

2) The waiting period is much shorter.

There has been a gradual increase in the number of forign patients for US, UK, Middle East, Bangladesh, Pakistan. But statistics haven't been shared in public by the industry.

This is undoubtly helping the private hospitals to rake in the moolah, but at the same time, the benefits are not being passed on to the needy and the poor adequately. There certainly is no harm for private investors, to woo the overseas patients, but they should not forget the social responsibilities.

Medical Tourism fascinates Indian healthcare industry. The reason is obvious. But it possess two very important questions

a. Are we ready to deliver?

and

b. If we are doing it at a cost of our existing patient base? I believe the medical tourism as a business proposition is welcome. Strategizing to increase foreign patient foot fall is a great idea. But let's ensure that existing patient base seeking medical attention also receives equal care and benefit. This can be achieved only by creation of newer hospitals with deeper penetration in non metros at affordable cost with same level of clinical care. This would ensure availability of good quality healthcare at the doorstep and thus reduction in migration and this would provide greater level of flexibility and leverage to concentrate on medical tourism.

I think that India attracts patients because it's a tourist country known for is openness. Furthermore, as most of the emerging powers, it has qualified person, while being in an environment where the standard of living is affordable.

I support Mr. Akram's views. Unless India recognises all the sources it has, Medical tourism will never be a success here.

Well guys.. i think YES IT IS GAINING IMPORTANCE..!!! though India is well known for all of its traditional medicines and ayurvedas with which many of the diseases are cured... but as a matter of fact in the current scenario INDIA AND ITS POPULATIONS  are not thinking in a wider scope.. or in the other way round where there are not realizing the importance of resources they have..

In simple terms "UNLESS AND UNTIL INDIA DOSENT RECOGNIZES ITS IMPORTANCE OF RESOURCES AND DOSENT ACT ACCORDINGLY... THE MEDICAL TOURISM WILL NOT HAVE A SCOPE..."

According to me it is gaining importance, where there is more number of patients form UK and US are visiting our country for better medical care and to go with less cost and affordable stay here......So yes there is more number of patients and with this the tourism industry is raking high moolahs........
