It will be better to say that Linux is gaining the hold on technology. See the Mobile platform like Android, Meego and the netbook share etc. After all on the servers linux is the choice than windows. Even on the Desktop Ubuntu is Conquering. And Finally its time for Microsoft to step back ;) Let Technology be lead by Open Minded People. Let OpenSource Win.

Its obviusly true that microsoft is losing its hold because brands like Apple come in open and prooved their products in the market. Apple also acquire more revanue than microsoft. If we talk about development field, microsoft's .NET is not so better than like Java technology. In fact Microsoft is not as powerful brand now as it was and it is UNIVERSAL truth that we feel in market...

Microsoft aka MS, i believe, is now beginning to feel the pinch after a long long time and this is just the beginning where the word 'monopolization' that MS has been experiencing all these while would now take a new turn for the better. It has no doubt created a revolution in the past and is still continuing to hold on its position as a world changer, but is slightly slipping down giving a ray of hope to other biggies to sniff a win esp. in the mobile OS space. Google is not far behind in the OS race where Google Chrome, an OSS that could give MS a real pain in the butt at intermittent periods. Steve Ballmer may no longer be able to depend on BILL to show him the GATES of innovation from the WINDOWS of his room, but now may only have to depend on his instincts and experience to take MS forward which at this junction would seem difficult with Google's android (mobile) and Chrome (PCs) apart from other upcoming competitors. So MS, chod (to be pronounced correctly) na re, pakde rehna - You may now need the help of India's Fevicol to hold on to your position.

I think MS can not continue the way individualy, some companies get stay live MS, such as Adobe, ESET and..., and also many of game developers prefer DirectX 10.0 for gaming, however OpenGL is so better It needs time for make MS as a small and weak company also it's good to know many windows users (normal users) changed to Linux friends, and also for a developer windows is hell, BUT windows is virus programers and hackers Eden

I would say yes microsoft don't have the same hold on the market of operating systems and all that it was used to have. new players have entered in the market like Apple,Sun,IBM,COREL,Adobe who are competing and challenging them in every domain."IBM [Smartsuite] and Corel [WordPerfect Suite] have measurable
installed bases with their office productivity products. Apple may
distribute certain of its application software products with various
models of its PCs."
So definitely microsoft are facing challenges from all quarters and if they want to remain a leader in the market then they have to constanly come up with newer products.
What do you say?

YES Microsoft can be soon challanged with MAC or LINUX in later years. The Version magic wont be working any more What MS does is brings out the common man fetures with user friendly experience with a lot of system resource utlization and impacting system and puting it in an ustable manner but I hope MAC is into it too much ahead and LINUX will soon be at that benchmark. LINUX is the stable software.

Yes, its losing its hold on technology, check out Windows vista which is a disaster. No one likes it. The 'Wow' marketing campaign for Vista has been replaced with the more
desperate 'if you try it, you might not hate it'. Don't this show Microsoft is losing.

Microsoft i.e. Bill Gates is a saga of going from nothing to producing global business platform now to household system rather creating hold on Household. Does anyone consider AMD a competitor to Intel, even China (N Korea) is unable to come up with any pirated solution, Soviet is history, Russians after having few pegs of Vodka can’t follow what market economy is?$*#...:( (Its Jan now the infamous Russian winter which freezed the Blue blooded Nazi's. The Cyberian Winter), they have just stared picking up few (bills) Dollars U$D. What to do? Even comRed Jotyi Basu is dead or we could have consulted him, as a fee we could have conducted a Bharat Bandh!! Burnt American Flags, effigies of American President. Shouted slogan pelted stones on American Embassy and consulates, stuck posters on public bus, Local trains, public toilets etc. Created human chain as a protest or whatever. What a view, I am seeing this thru the "Windows of time".

How can anyone say that? If this argument raised just because of the open source revolution, any standard user will easily justify how much "Real" open source is available. Microsoft's place will be unbeatable among the user's community, until unless the common end user is able to think of other than "Windows" and MS applications. But for sure Microsoft has changed some of its strategies towards free and open source applications, which it should have done long before. This strategy will definitely add much more value to its reputation and improves the trust levels across its user community. Success and Failures are a part of growth. I agree that Vista is a failure but, Windows 7 is an immense success. XP successfully filled the gap between the release after Vista failed. We also can say that the failure of Vista may became a successful lead towards developing Windows 7. Windows 7 proved that Microsoft is still the best in its familiar technology. So deviating to other technologies is to show that Microsoft is not behind any technology and to provide hope to its lovers.

Harshil i agree with you.Even today most of the PCs and laptops have microsoft's operating system and the newly launched web-browser by microsoft-IE 8 has also gain quite a market share. So definitely microsoft has not lose its hold in the field of technology and there is a long way their competitors have to traverse if they want to displace microsoft from the top position.

Microsoft main strength is the amazing array of applications and the developer ecosystem it has developed around its operating systems.
Also i recent read an article by jack gannsle where he said "Perfection is penalized. Windows is hardly ideal, yet Microsoft is by
any measure the most successful software company of all time.
Capitalism doesn't, it seems, reward getting it right. Profits seem to
come from "good enough.""
So as long as they keep being just good enough and there is nothing pathbreaking or disruptive to challenge their supremacy in OS market, they will hold .
Also MS has diversified into many other areans where it is doing a commendable job developing world class applications and enabling frameworks like .net.
for example i really like the MS Songsmith developed by microsoft reasearch.
i think MS is here to stay.

It is time of competition so it may seem to us that Microsoft is losing its hold on technology as the company is providing us latest technolgy very fast as per our need and in some of there products there were some problems. But to overcome it has also provided with its updates which overcomes those problems. Microsoft provides relaible products which is also proved in many studies that people has started migrating back on Microsoft Technologies. Some people also say that Micosoft products are costly but if we see for long run dive then we will find it cheap s compared to others. Maintaing costs of Microsoft products is less and the products are user friendly.

Hi Friend,
This never indicates there downturn, the people are also the cause for it. People dont want to accept the change - nomatter who ever tells them. The fear of change has to be evaded. Also due to recession, companies are not ready to buy the licence for the new technology.
Microsoft has launched campaign for Sunset XP - and asks the users to migrate to Vista / Windows 7 ASAP. They are going to stop the support for XP. Then what choice is left for user. This is called forced migration.

Microsoft has come with many technologies and all those technologies have proved that Microsoft is ahead of other technologies. Microsoft has come with MOSS which is big hit in the market and now a days it's requirement is going up fast also with Web technologies Microsoft has proved that they are the best. When Microsoft has started ASP at that time JSP was in the market and after that ASP had replaced JSP also new technology which is ASP.NET and .NET technologies with Compact Framework is big hit. No other companies compete with ASP.NET. Also Win CE 5.0/6.0 is a big hit by Microsoft. And currently Microsoft is ahead of all other companies.

MS is not loosing any foothold in the market, Infact it is even more stronger. Vista may be a disaster but with products like Server 2008, Sharepoint, Dynamics and even more they are gaining a lot of momentum. There's lot of focus on "7" which I guess will be far better than other OS'es. Having worked extensively on Non-windows & Windows platform the only problem with MS is "Reliablity"..Hope MS works on that one!
