Most day-to-day recruitment programs are desktop based which requires costly overheads and resources. So many say that recruitment systems, job boards and career websites should become mobile optimized to take full advantage of this growing medium. The mobile Internet is ramping faster than desktop Internet and more users may connect to the Internet via mobile devices than desktop PCs within few years. So friends, Is mobile going to become the recruitment platform of choice?

Yes, it seems to be a time not too far away. As of now, Mobile needs to be a lot more interactive for it to become a recruitment platform. With the current technology, the recruitment process can probably be started off using the mobile- through SMS ads etc or it can be used as a tool for scheduling discussions/coordinating.

For Mobile to be a complete rec tool, voice, video and document transfer need to be lot more robust than it is- In short, the Collaborative features in Mobile need to go a few notches up for it to be a complete rec tool.

It remains to be seen what the next gen Mobiles like Google Nexus One, (and I'm sure Nokia and Apple will have their gadgets in the queue)has to offer in these aspects.

I know that mobile Internet is growing rapidly but it cannot serve as a platform for recruitment. There are many drawbacks like not all phone support that application, less interactive and consumes more time. Most of the people in India use basic mobiles though which they cannot access Internet. It is also not that user friendly compared to desktop or laptops. So according me mobiles cannot serve for recruitment purpose, if at all used it will not be effective.

No I am not agree with you. b'coz basically all these equipments works on digital technology. The instrument which could define 0 and 1 could do definitely. whethers its hight end graphic rich or a basic sms sending capable cell phones, then the basic need is to exchange information. Thats all. Which needs to be coded & programed & handled properly.

Mobile is playing a great role in recruitment now a days what i am thinking.Technology encroaches so fast through mobiles so that it is becoming so easy to handle all the things with in a moment with less time.Multimedia cell helps a lot to both students and officers for better co-ordination.Process are becoming so easy especially through SMS.

The processes through mobiles also reduces the time factor which has great importance in these busy days.So i think it is not only going to become the platform but also it has created bench mark in this regards.People are not getting agree with this but certainly it is shortest way of recruitment what i am feeling.I want to know what others will give their view regarding this topic.

Regards,

Sumeet Biswal.

Yes, the small 'machine' in our hand may be well utilized even for recruitment/s. This machine has seen many changes and is being developped further to perform lots more jobs.

When Banking may be done via this machine, why not recruitments ? In a situation when recruiters are eager to reach their target candidate/s fast, they may find " mobile " the best alternative. Days may come we may get adopted to this.

Since you debate topic is worded accordingly, Yes. Mobile "is going to" become the recruitment platform of choice.

The crucial criteria is the recruiter is actually speaking to the person he wants to recruit. If that integrity can be maintained by a phone/laptop application where the person giving the interview can be seen, there is no stopping "mobile recruitment"!

Since we are rapidly moving to globalization and treating the globe as one plateform, I reckon mobile recruitment is a key word.

today if we are in Singapore and looking out for talent trough-out the world, we have to have a direct connection through their own handphone. after reviewing resume the next step in recruitment process is telephonic interview.

I truly believe that mobile is and will be the key tool in the process of recruitment and even will be more strong sphare in head-hunting industry.

Thanks

Time for mobile is soon to come.  I would like to add a few points to support this idea.

1) Manyy people are already enjoying mobiile products & services, platform, technologies & contents in Japan.  One of the good & well known example is called i-mode.

2) Realizing ubiquitous networking society is a vision that all (at least most) IT/tech companies have and they are making upmost efforts tor it.  And new products, services, technollogies they announce and launch are evidence for progress.

3) Ubiquitous access to information on the Internet/web for timely decision making & actions is one of the requirement for competitive advantage for recruiting, similarly to all other business activities.

Difference between mobile and desk top, as far as services are concerned, both are alike with each other. Difference is only mobility, portability and being handy, and all these are possible only withmobile. Mobile has full capacity to do away with desk top for recruitment process and delay is only affordability of internet and services on affordable mobile sets, so that the same becomes common like todays mobile without internet. In fact, when it becomes possible that u have not to buy both and mobile is enough.

While not yet due to inadequate penetration levels, I feel in the not too distant future mobile phones will become the medium for recruitment.

The inhibiting factors at present are usage levels of the required phone and cost of mobile internet - but as always in the past, costs will tumble with time...

It may take time. But this will happen for sure!! It will take time because it will require standadization in mobile services and platform. (here we dont have monopoly like Microsoft Word). So, what kind of file you can exchange, what kind of display you/client needs, etc. will determine its future.

For simplicity, I can't imagine if i would prefere to create my CV on mobile. (I will prefere to create on dektop and then would like to exchange through mobile internet). Can I scroll through CV as we do with papar cv or dexktop? Lot of things to be resolved before it becomes that prevalent.

But except this aspect, all other things can be better done through mobile. Information (time/availability/interest) all are checked though mobile conversation only. Many services like status update, new opportunities, matching opportunities, support on call etc can be better provided over mobile internet because it is the only electronics device still considered as personal in office. It is not monitored by office internet/server. Many people may not do anything over office network/internet connection as it is monitored and restricted and this way they miss option to be connected to recruiter for any help.

There definetely remains a need for this. But lets see what kind of technical maturity it will take for this to become prevalent.

Yes, in coming years , it may be the option of carrying out the recruitment in mobile. But as per now it wont be the option as all the networks donot support the application.Again every thing has its advantageous and disadvantageous, advantageous could be on the spot reply, immediate recruitment and the disdvantage include, unable to enter the correct info. as the screen size will be less and its difficult in it to enter the data, more confusion among the fields as they will be close to each other with small screen.

If the Mobile phones have the capability to hold the complex Network systems along with its normal functionalities then no doubt, this is the best option for every individual. This takes a few years the use Chip technology in Mobile.

This allows to have an end to end process flow built for operations via mobile technology

ITZ and Oxy Cash Cards have already been seen to be moving in this direction

Yes , But not as a platform but as a preferred tool. But that can understood as off today due to maturity of the mobile tech. I think some service venders already like Idea already started this service with some monthly subscriptions. But they are providing complete platform but communication can started with this tool and then further actions …

The new tech . like SOA , Portal , Restful services are growing support due to above factor in mobile tech using cloud and virtualization which reduces the operating cost ,increase reusability of old applications and faster change in business process.

The recruitement Revolution requires a touch of mobile technology.

The market is fat growing and it requires for a company or an entity to get the resources as fast as possible with better expectation for it..

hence , mobile as a medium for recruitment -platform enables the recruites to apply from a remote location without having to worry about the time spent unused in getting to a location.

But certain phases of the recruitement process can be carried out with the mobile technique and the needed next phases can be carried out later with front to front process.

I believe mobile computing, with the expansion of more terminals of different types (smartphones, netbooks, etc.) ootherwise called pervasive computing, is changing and will change even more the way the user accesses and utilises data and applications.

This will impact on every aspect of day-to-day life, and more importantly, those activities which require human-to-human interaction, such as recruiting.

Use technology as it best suits you! The premise of mobile becoming the chosen one might not be accurate. It could most certainly cater to, at the various recruitment stages but at the cost of sounding traditional, it will take some time to replace the face to face assessment.

Mobile is the platform of next gen.

With the advancement in technology resulting in rich content deliveries (Media/Text), reducing gap between the CE-PC devices (refer http://www.eetimes.com/issue/cs/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=208808506), I believe the mobile platform will become a mainstream platform

for most of the desktop applications.

E.g. M-Commerce, Mobile Banking is very good example of increasing usage of mobile platforms.

While it may not replace or provide alternative to desktop but I believe it would provide very strong support to the exiting platforms.

New development towards the possibility of having open platform for mobile devices will further encourage development/adoption of popular applications to the mobile platform.

Updates on go, alerts, video conf, voip applications etc with assumption of 3G or better data service options with affordable cost, I support for argument.

With the cost of mobile phones on the decrease everyday and the cost of connections also decreasing drastically, most people are now capable of buying high end phones.( Especially the students).

so they would find it more convenient to browse the net thru their phones rather than sit in home in front of the comp.

Barun what you said is correct but it cannot be a platform for recruiting. What you said is used only for the process of recruiting. It is only useful for maintaining relationship  and not for selecting employees. They may use mobile initially for screening but not for the final selection. There will be a personal interview at last.

as my other friends supporting this section , i too believe that the best way to recruit skilled consultants is the conventional way.

i believe mobile, internet, telephonic, etc. work as a support system in the process of hiring as well they serve to reduce time, improve efficiency, data management, bulk hiring etc.

i just mean all this medium act as a catalyst to the main hiring process i.e. conventional way.

secondly, what i believe can make a bigger change is 1. video resume and 2. interviewing through video conferencing. if i want to name the second point ,ican say " virtual interview"

so why i believe virtual interview may take on ,has a number of reason.....like...

1.this will care of all the process without any physical movement of jobseeker n employer.

2.this will save lot of time n money...so the efficiency will def. improve.

3. bulk hiring can be done through placement agency.

4.this will reduce the hiring cost of companiess to a very great extent n these money can b utilized for training n dev. or RnD.

there r many more benefits than listed above, i believe u all can share.

but to support this we don't have a proper infra. like net conn. n video conf. at user end.

this may take time but i believe one day this is going to make a big difference in this industry.

do share ur views on this.   tnx.

I too agree with Vijay, face to face is the best method for recruiting. Mobile recruiting will not be as effective as personal recruiting. So in future the companies will look for the best talent and it is not possible through mobile recruiting so it cannot be the future of recruiting but will help in the process of recruiting.

It is quite simple! The first impression makes the effect! even in the 21st century. Until unless you see the person visually, you are not going to be evident of the person, you are going to recruit. I too have given the primary interview through mobile only, but I have to before HR persons for the final interview for the selection. In my experience, it is hard to have, mobile as the time reducer for the recruitment.

There are two different things involve in this.  One is Mobile Technology and other is Recruiting Process.  Recruiting process can be made easier by using mobile technology but can’t be use for complete recruiting process.

Mobile Technology: No doubt mobile technology is picking-up quite fast but with that is PC technology also.  Mobiles are becoming more affordable around the world same is PC, which has much more flexibility as compare to mobile.  I feel this is going to continue still for more time.   Net surfing on mobile is still a costly affair all over the world.   Till, internet mobile does not reach to the common man with negligible cost, it will not even going to help much in recruiting process.

Recruiting Process:  The recruitment process is not just taking a telephonic interview.   The recruiter has to judge the applicant in all respect and that is only possible with at least one personal interview.  That is the reason; big companies do not want to completely eliminate personal interview and/or interactive sessions (at least in case of fresher, manager and professionals).  These are companies, who are ready to adopt the new technology as fast as it changes, to ease the process not to take over the process.

I do not feel that Mobile will be a recruitment platform ever.

Recruitment is a vital function of any industry, it decide the growth of the industry in present and in future.

Today mobile has become the basis need of a man and everybody(especially students) can't afford the mobile with Hi-Fi function. If mobile becomes the platform for recruitment, it will create the dissatisfaction among students for the reason of not having costly mobile and without physical appearance mobile final selection will not be effective.

Not there yet.  While the obvious pro is convenience, the cons that are equally obvious are:

1.  Cost of mobile internet

2.  Recruitment remain less of a Txn Oriented process, more is personal touch, the responses (if you are seriously recruiting folks)

3.  May be useful for mass recruitment of trainees by calling them for a test et al.  Those can not be considered "recruitment" per se.

recruitment is a  critical  step for  any employer  ... initial  shortlisting can be done  by video conferencing but selection from shortlisted must be  done after physical appearence  ... cell phone certainly  is not a good tool for recruitment  ... cell phone  is  a  tool for immidiate access only  for  urgent matters  ... cell phone  creates disturbance  and distracts the person from his routine  ...well managed managers  do not require  to use  cellphones  except for personal use

i said "No" because i believe it will take quite some time for Mobile recruitment solutions t overtake desktop ones as the industry is not using these softwares at optimum level and the desktop recruitment software market is not saturated yet .Acc to me, there are easily 3-5 years for this to happen.

I would have said "Yes" because this will happen for sure in the long term. But for short term, its a "No".

Regards

Ankur

Skilled and Committed resources are the most important asset for any organisation. It is very much doubtful that ever the important process of recruitment will be done without a personal session as so much depends on the personality of the individual(s) ... Of course low skilled man power like call center telephone operators / door to door sales force / verification agents etc could be recruited enmass via Mobile phone based activities but even then better Internet connectivity / speed for Video transfers and maybe more superior handsets with the candidates may be a detterant.

A lot of work need to be done to make this dream come true.

As in 1999 we started working on a Law Portal with lots of advance feature including wml support for search engine, people find it useful but only 1-2%, hence same turn out to be failure when details come into the consideration. Mobile is good tool to communicate instantly but not replace everything i.e. PC, Web, Personal Appearance etc...
