Is Narayana Murthy, Infosys correct?

Speaking specifically about the Indian education system and especially about IT, I would like to quote Mr. Narayana Murthy, Infosys:

"We have not leveraged the power of education. Our engineers have become people who learn by rote (a learning technique which focuses on memorization), pass the examination and they are incapable of making a difference to the society,"

Other Facts on Education system of India:

But about 40% of the work force of about 400 million people is illiterate and another 40% comprises school dropouts, says BCG in a recent report.

Home to one of the world’s oldest universities, now only 10% of the roughly 20 million who enroll in the first grade every year finish high school. Female participation is abysmal.

With the surveys on education system showing such figures, those who reach the degree level are posed with a serious challenge of getting a job even before leaving their college! In this stressful scenario, what should be the focus of the student- JOB or KNOWLEDGE?

Is Narayana Murthy Right?What's your stand?

Being fresher, i would say once you get a job, knowledge will definitely follow. Because everyone wants to get promoted in his/her organization and for this he will definitely try to get a relevant knowledge.

Though I am not familliar with the Indian Education system, it is my personal opinion that study SHOULD usually be aimed at gaining sufficient knowledge to allow the succesful student to enter the job market. Having employed several young people, directly out of college/university, it is clear to me that they entered their particular field of study because they were hoping to get gainful employment in their FIELD of study, not a particular job. Studying for a specific job would limit the incumbents employability for other companies in the same field.

a student should have to concentrate on his studies companies will automatically follow him if u will target a specific company and start preparing for that than ur knowledge field will be very specific and for a corporate person. it is the worst situation............

I feel, its very important to update our knowledge even after leaving your college. If you have a good environment in your office to update your knowledge, it will be good to study to get a job. If not, then its always better to study to gain knowledge, Job WILL FOLLOW>

Our Education System is result-oriented forcing the students to mug up, memorize and vomit as such what they were taught. Education should be about exploration, research and references, and the students should be taught to think out of box, (not quickfix solutions), convert things around us to simple form which may look so complex to others! Our system of education should be such to develop inquisitiveness, hone latent talent,  but we have grossly failed in doing so! INFOSYS spends exorbitant amount to train the talents - why do they have to do that if the students gain the requisite knowledge in the institution itself. He is right!

i believe LIFE :is to gain knowledge! !and this process begins from ur birth till ur death!!!Its an unending process...which cannot be completed even!!! Job is just a part of LIFE!!!it can end today or tomorrow!!!but knowledge remains forever!! Study only for knowledge!!!it will definitely lead u to ur job!!! an eg: i remember from a movie: 3 IDIOTS!!:)

I think one should study to gain knowledge n need not worry abt the job.If u r capable then definitely JOB wil follow u.So first focus on attaining more & more practicl knowledge..

mr.murthy sir is also right on his part.Students hv lot of theoreticl subjects to study without any practicl implementation of this subjects.So they jst mugg up the mattr and study to score well in exams.

i think the syllabus in schools and colleges must be updated and thr should be balance between the practicl and theoreticl knowledge.More focus shud be laid on imparting practical knowledge.Atleast student should know why they r studying this subjects n whr & how they r going to use their knowledge..

It is OK to study for gaining knowledge & job will follow, but what about our

colleges?

As, these colleges are not ready to accept for innovative ideas & techniques to

teach the students & doing mechanical work of producing "N" no of graduates

every year without any career focus.

I agrre with murthy sir that today's student must have to acquire practical knowledge and develop skill to getting job. Especially, freshers should required otherwise difficult to get job. For fresher, company want extra curicculam activities and good market knowledge.

Students must focus on acquiring knowledge. The colleges must add another subject in the final year on "Communication & Presentation Skills" which will be a value addition to the knowledge acquired so that the Fresher can properly present himself and his knowledge.
