Is nature inherently "opportunistic" or "benevolent"?

Question arose while reading a book about "nature" of nature. On one hand, it appears that the nature is most beautiful, mysterious and benevolent at all stages. Digging it deeper it appears that even the inanimate part of nature (all the way to elementary particles) are highly opportunistic and will do anything to survive and thrive. For example, the beautiful colors of fall leaves are caused by the poisonous alkoids that tree develops to keep other organisms away from its premise in time of resource scarcity (winter).

Nature is always benovolent.

The very nature that you have described about the poisonous alkoids itself shows how benovolent the tree is to be alive for others( may be in terms of fruit,nut,flowers,bark,leaves itself,sap or plain shade and shelter it provides to living beings by inflicting the pain of shedding those leaves(In human terminology it is pain).All to be there for another season giving out Oxygen for living beings in addition to those listed above.

Nature is always Benevolent. Change is law, so its also another aspect of nature. One who can manage himself with the change survives and the other one dies. This is Darwin's theory. We cannot blame nature for that. Don't forget, we re living in its mercy. Whatever we do, whatever we eat, enjoy, use, each and everything is given by nature. Even our breathe. Then how can we be so ungreatful? God has gifted us so beautiful nature and we are ruining its beauty and still blaming it.How strange !!! Not even realising our own fault....
